in In My Lifetime: A Black Gen Xer’s Perspective on Barrack Obama’s Nomination for the Presidency. . . on Political Intersection
I am overwhelmed! Today I spoke with my aunt who is in her 80s! She goes to bed at 8:00 p.m. yet she has been up every night this week watching and enjoying what she is seeing. I called her because I just wanted to hear what she had to say. My mom's coworkers' father told the campaigners some weeks ago that he never thought that he would see the day that a white man would be helping a black man get elected President as the White gentleman stepped on his porch to speak with him about Barack Obama.
As I spoke with my aunt all she could keep saying was this is really something to watch. She said "you did not see what I saw. WE could not sit and eat with white folks. We had to ride on the back of the bus. We could not use the same bathrooms and water fountains. Even if we sat down at H.L. Greens (apparently a store) we were asked to move. Now this!I can vote and now for a black man."
Each day I have heard people say that they wished that their fathers and mothers would see this day. My aunt, Sarah said to me that she wish her father, my great-grandfather was alive to see this wonderful day. Amazingly enough, his grandparents and possibly even his parents were enslaved in South Carolina. For him to see this day, it would be amazing.
I remember spending the night at my family house (the house Aunt Sarah lives in now, that the entire 2nd and some of the 3rd generation was raised in!) that night in 1984 when Jesse Jackson, a friend of my uncle gave his keynote speech for the Democratic Convention. I remember saying "oh wow one day we are going to get to go to the White House. Will he make my unlce a member of his staff? I was so excited. I was just a naive little girl then but I wonder if I am a naive educated black woman to think that Barack Obama will win this election in November. Has race relations really changed that much in America?
Well there is one thing I do know and that is I am hopeful and I am praying for Barack, Michelle and the girls daily like I pray for my family for safety and that this will turn out the way I want it to. I also know that Aunt Sarah is up waiting, watching and listening for Barack to give his speech. She cannot wait to cast her vote in November but i am truly in amazment because just two years ago I wrote my thesis on race in america. I am not sure if everyone is ready for what is happening but I sure am.
Today my heart is broken because my father never saw this day...He would be 71 this year and I know he would be right there in line with my mom to cast their votes in Winston-Salem. (In memory of my dad, Herman, who taught me to love everyone no matter what color)

My girl did something similar just as we were getting ready to leave for Edmonton, needless to say our trip got postponed a few hours because of the waiting at Emergency. I know the feeling of where is all this blood coming from too......wow, that is so scary. So glad he is ok!

in Me rambling again… on Lori's Reflections
I have in the past felt the same...check out some of my posts from two years ago and I think essentially I was saying the very thing you are saying here! God has changed allot of thing for me in two years and this is one of them but I began to desperately pray for "truth tellers", people who would be my "real" friend not the fake stuff...I have enough of that in my life. The last two years God has been piecing the puzzle of this together in my life and just realized last week that God has surrounded me with real friends, age does not matter, some of my greatest friends are older ladies (some of it is because they are not so consumed with raising their children anymore so they focus more on their circle of influence plus they are more mature and they understand how important compassion and walking with someone during a difficult time because they have walked that road several times). I am raising teenagers too so I can say this, do not allot anyone to make you feel guilty about anything. Raising good moral teenagers in this day is one of the most difficult feats you will ever do....they are surrounded by influences that continually drag them down....things that were not prevalent 20 years ago is reaking havock with our children's minds...all you can do is the best that you can do....God has to take it from there.....Wow this comment is going way longer than I expected so I will just say this...I am praying for you girl!
