in Many adults cannot name a scientist on virology weblog
Off the top of my head, I'd say Hawking, Newton, Einstein, Bohr, Degrasse Tyson, Pasteur, Curie, Edison, Franklin, Tesla.

Can I count computer scientists, like Vint Cerf?

in Ten successful techniques for effectively growing your social network on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
I have a small IT blog that I run to target a neglected segment of computer administrators. One of my posts mentioned a technique called "Rubber Ducky Debugging", where you explain a problem that you're having to the rubber duck, and through the process of explaining it, your subconscious solves the problem on its own. It sounds very strange until you try it, then it seems mysterious but effective.

I decided that I had to go get a duck, but the only thing I could find was a package of 16 rubber ducks, so I created a survey where-in I asked two questions: "How did you find out about Standalone Sysadmin?", and "What would you change on the blog to improve it?"

I got 64 responses (which for my niche readership I don't consider bad), and each one had helpful advice on improving my site.

You can see the blog entries here, if you're interested:

in the Hulu situation on boxee blog
I'm rooting for you (and other similar media repackagers). The original media providers are shooting themselves in the foot by stopping people from watching their IP.

No one using Boxee would deny that the sources own the IP. You're not even stripping ads. Why wouldn't they want to increase viewership as much as possible? I'd be glad of ANYONE enabling more people to access my media.

in Lighttpd Book from Packt - Great Thanksgiving Present on Homo-Adminus Blog
Good review. If I were shopping for a web server, I'd definitely pick up a copy.

I feel the same way you do about tech books. I hate those two or three initial chapters on remedial topics. Only occasionally have I found them really useful.

The review chapters at the beginning of VPNs Illustrated is great. And all of Bruce Schnier's Applied Cryptography is gold from cover to cover.
