in Hosting with SliceHost on Life is grand
I've been using Slicehost for nearly a year now. I have several rails apps running with them. So far I have zero recorded downtime, which I haven't had with any other hosts that I've used.

There was one incident where there was some downtime as they moved my slice to a different machine because of memory problems. However it happened so quickly that my external monitoring software didn't even notice it. I only found out about it when they emailed me to apologize about the downtime!

in Does your Web site work without WWW? - Paul Walsh, the Irish Opportunist on Paul Walsh, the Irish Opportunist
Thanks for the link @Paul. There are a surprising number of sites around that still don't set this up properly. And it's such a basic thing. It's one of those things that has absolutely no effect on me but still makes me irrationally annoyed every time I encounter it :)

Re @Michele's point about some ISPs not providing DNS records for both versions: if any of them are still doing this then it's very bad form. If that is the case though you can use a 3rd party DNS provider. As @Ana's linked post describes there are also several other benefits to using a 3rd party DNS service, including being able to do your redirection at the DNS level instead of using a rewrite rule on your server.

in A URL is enough to win ISA best company of the year - Paul Walsh, the Irish Opportunist on Paul Walsh, the Irish Opportunist
Seems a bit strange all right. No matter how impressive their demo/beta is I wouldn't give an award for best new company to something that hasn't launched yet. Unless the award was for best new idea or something similar. I don't think you can tell how good it is until it is tested in the open market.

in Using Git to Manage and Deploy your Rails Apps | Join The Conversation on Git and Rails
Thanks a lot for putting up this screencast. I'm in the process of switching my workflow from svn to git on a couple of projects and it's really helped me to do it quickly.

in AIB and your personal information on Life is grand
I'm a bit shocked by this. I'd always assumed that the bank couldn't give anybody *any* details about your finances. I presumed that in a case like you described it would be up to you to get the required information from the bank and then give it to the car dealer.

Hey Paul,

Where did you get the mac client for this? All I can find on the site is the windows client and a form so I can submit my email to be informed when the mac client is available.

cheers,

AF

I think that no matter what part of the world you go to there is a high chance of meeting an Irish person who knows someone that you know:)

in Snap Preview isn’t very snappy on Life is grand
I find these annoying too. I think a lot of people use them because they look cool without thinking through all the consequences. You can also switch them off for all sites that you visit by setting a cookie in your browser. See this post(http://www.aidanf.net/reasons-not-to-use-snap-preview) for more details.

You could set this up quickly using drupal (use 4.7), the leech module and one of the web link modules, no programming involved. There are also the spam module and bad behaviour module to control spammers.
