Swine flu is nothing new, and it is not actually any more dangerous than common influenza: http://tinyurl.com/chcdnq Basically it's all a big plot to sell greeting cards and sodas (and hurt bacon sales). ;)

"f I took 30 minutes out of my day to watch the speech and another two hours to research/write about it, then clearly I think it's relevant content." Fair enough, but you should title it next time, "I'm a very busy and important person who thinks this speech was tedious but worthwhile. Check it." I'd totes read that. ; )

Yay! Flame war with Christy! what? what? RON PAUL 2020!!!! OMFG

It's a political speech not a stand-up gig or a speech to keep you from living in a van down by the river. If you wanted to highlight the content then don't bury the lead behind the title of "Mayor Dean's Long & Boring Speech Explained." I wasn't saying the post's content wasn't helpful, but that the title wasn't clever but rather unfortunately perpetuating today's ADD'd "entertain me" culture. Just a criticism, no harm meant. I'd say, "hey, it's just Nashvillest," but to your very deserved credit you're getting quite the following, and with that comes a higher responsibility.

Christy Frink Well hey, to each his own. If I took 30 minutes out of my day to watch the speech and another two hours to research/write about it, then clearly I think it's relevant content. Appreciate the feedback, but with a larger following also comes the inability to please everyone. This is probably why I don't normally write about anything remotely political.

Agreed, bad form friends. The last thing we need is to continue the trend of judging our elected leaders based on their entertainment value. Reminds me of this: http://tinyurl.com/clhs44 Love you, but maybe judge on the content next time?

Christy Frink Did I not just outline the content? Not saying the content boring, but definitely saying the speech was boring. As evidenced by the fact that no one (yourself included, I'm guessing) watched/listened to it outside of a few media folks. Not quite sure how that's offensive, especially to a Daily Show-watching Wonkette reader such as yourself. ;)

in Nashville Mass Transit Week: April 13-19 on Nashvillest
It's true, I tried riding it before, but due to the inane and under-developed routing it does literally add hours to your trip. Furthermore, their online "Trip Planner" doesn't even work! MTA will get users when they create an actually helpful system. Until then they can have all of the awareness weeks they want. All it will do is make people aware of how useless it is.

I can't believe I'm saying this but I absolutely agree with Rep. Campfield. I think that's a really good idea. The lottery preys on the poor and does increase poverty. Making those at the poverty line ineligible to play the lottery is pro-poor not anti.

Thomas On the other hand, the lottery takes money from those who make poor decisions (i.e. spending an entire paycheck on powerball) and gives it to those who still have a chance (i.e. college students). If someone is poor and wastes their money on the lottery I really don't feel that sorry for them.. until kids are involved.

I thought it was Al's B-day, not Mr. Johnson's. Now when you have a story alerting me to the toxic lead levels that Gore's Nobel Prize are depositing into my water supply every time he takes a shower then let me know.

in Bright & Early: Happy Birthday, Al Gore Edition on Nashvillest
I don't care that Al Gore left on some landscaping lights, watched a show on the teevees, or didn't unplug his hip-grinding Elvis wall clock. In fact I think it's kind of pathetic that Mr. Johnson spent his Saturday evening staking out the former veep's home. Bet he burned a lot of fossil fuels funding Ahmerikan Freedom Hatas driving out there and idling roadside. It's also pathetic that anyone (besides FoxNews) is paying attention to ad hominem stories like these as having any relevance whatsoever.

P.S. I'm happy to take this up on a facebook wall.

in Recession Roundup: Nashvillest Guide To Recession Deals Around Town on Nashvillest
Do NOT go to "Eat" at Loews. The promotion is only for one specific menu item of the night. Furthermore prepare for the most AWKWARD moment ever when the waiter comes at the end of the meal and audibly asks you and everyone in your party to tell him how much you would like to pay for your meal. I kid you not. The food was good but nothing to write home about. The place was DEAD and I mean dead. Only one other table (obviously hotel guests) occupied the place the entire time we were there. I felt terrible for the team of servers and the house musician who would be going home with less tip money than a Sonic carhop. One of the worst dining experiences I've ever had.

Why are they ugly? The ugliest ones I've seen are the ones on 8th Ave S a couple of blocks south of Zanies. I actually like 5th & Main. It's well proportioned, aesthetically pleasing, and is harmonious with its location while still be interesting (though I wish we could have voted on which restaurants bought space there).

Christy Frink Mostly because of the paint color. They used who different shades of red that are close enough together that you wonder if they actually intended to or if they just ran out of paint halfway through. The ones that aren't visible from the road don't look bad, but the red ones... yuck.
