i have to agree that september flew by! also, i started to cuss like a sailor when i started teaching (but mostly when i was driving too!). i realized it was a sort of harmless way to relieve stress though. and i like your goal "try not to quit." that is my single number one goal until may. ha.

i am a christian,who happened upon your thread while reading about jimmy swaggarts dire deeds.
i am astounded by some of the venomous crap that some "anonymous" respondents leave,and i can see why it is as abhorrent to you as it is to me.
i have my beliefs, but i also have close friends who are gay,some of who don't believe in god,and we all get along fine.
i don't point the finger at others (intentionaly anyway)as i know that all i have to worry about, is where i am and what i'm doing...we often ask each other questions about different things,and respect each others differences.
i suppose what i'm trying to say is that there are rude ,nasty people everywhere,that seek to point the finger at you,so they take the attention off themselves(like jimmy swaggart for example) and idiots exist in every culture and belief systems.if i met you, i would guarantee that we would get along just fine,as i would prefer your company to some redneck macho man anyday,regardless of whether you share my beliefs or not.and to the religious people who would say i'm not a christian if i have gay friends and enjoy their company, i am a moral person, and i live by my convictions,and they are what i measure my behaviour against...but i don't enforce them on others as a pre-requisite for friendship.

Sid, your child will not turn out like that sad person.

I always beleived that as long as both parents show appreciation (not denigration) for different heritages/cultures, the child(ren) will be fine.

In this case, one parent is absent and clearly that guy is harboring some resentment. It falls upon the present parent to take up that responsibility to expose the child to diversity at an early age though it might be difficult if someone is a single parent.

I think marriage has declined because having kids out of wedlock is no longer a social stigma. Nowadays, you don't need to be married to have a kid. If a young girl got pregnant anytime before 1970, she'd have a shotgun wedding or her whole family would be shamed and considered outcasts in the neighborhood. That still happens today in socially conservative countries.

I think divorce is increasing because of financial difficulties and less family friendly policies in the U.S than Europe as well as less social stigma against a woman filing for divorce.

It does seem that the Women's/Feminist/Sexual Freedom movement and less religiosity coincided with the decline in marriage & out-of-wedlock births.

Professor Gates provided two forms of ID to prove the house belonged to him. The cops should have LEFT the premises after that. End of Story.

The cop slapped on a bogus charge on the professor to teach him a lesson and now the charges were dropped even before they went to court. Clearly the charges had no legal merit. Gates can cry racism in his own house as many times as he wants -- it is not a legal offense to do so.

I don't think you should allow anonymous comments for the following reasons.

1) Its simple enough to click on "name" at the end of the post. Its not like you are asking people to sign up for a google account

2) People aren't loosing the right to be anonymous, as they can post under a pseudonym and even change them with each post if they want.

3) Its easier to address someones post when you can refer to an actual name rather than "anon".

As far as how this effects rural voters and PA voters, hard to say. My feeling is that people who support Obama either agree with him, or at least are willing to search out more info on what he said and why. For people who don't, its one more way of piling on.

I will say that Hillary's behavior is once again astounding. She is really trying to woo two constituencies, the voters and the superdelegates. I think her "church and gun" schtick looks fake to the voters, and does not endear her to the superdelegates.

Because they don't "see" themselves as "black". Remember, there is no form of one-dropping in Brazil.

The 80% percent "black" is technically a U.S interpretation of Brazil.

According to Brazilian Census:

49.7% White
42.6% Pardo (Brown)
6.9% Black
0.5% Asian
0.3% Amerindian

Brazil is very color conscious society. If you are lighter than midnight black, you are not black.
Most African Americans would not fall under the "black" category either.

It's racism, colorism, and classism all mixed into one. You don't know where it begins or ends. That's enough to give anyone a headache. What seems to be a constant in many color conscious societies is the darker skinned individuals with stereotypical african features and the full blooded native indian are more often than not always at the bottom rung unless it's sports or music.

It seems to me people are talking about one thing but really discussing four different things at the same time.
There is:

Genes/DNA- (one "pure" ancestry or many)

Phenotype (How one appears which is influenced by the first factor and affects how one is treated socially)

Cultural Environment- (How one is raised and experiences the world which can be influenced by the first 2 factors)

Self-Identity (How one sees themselves which can be influenced by the first 3 factors).

These are the folks that sent out a newsletter that had the picture of Obama in Somali garb (which they referred to as "Muslim attire"), and referred to him as "Barack Hussein Obama." It was so bad that the RNC told them to knock it off.

The political stupidity of this is also mindblowing. I really don't think they want to make it open season on candidates wives, because that causes much bigger problems for McCain than Obama.

Its not even that I am angry anymore, because nothing she says or does at this point surprises me.

I am just bone weary of the crap. I'm tired of hearing about how if Democrats were Republicans, or if the race wasn't decided by pledged delegates, or if you count FL and MI and not caucus states and its the third Tuesday of the month and there is a full moon and you gave Hillary the popular vote, she'd be the nominee.

I'm tired of seeing women who faced down sexism and blazed trails for me now act like math is hard and rules aren't fair. I'm tired of the public threats and tantrums. While I would like nothing better than for Obama to buy an hour of tv time and go on a righteous rant about Hillary, that does not serve the big picture. And the big picture is November, with as many Hillary supporters on board as possible (save putting her on the ticket, that would be suicide).

And yes, the fault for the split in the party right now lies squarely with her. But as we have seen, she is incapable of putting anything ahead of her own ambition, so the repair work is going to fall on Obama. Sucks, but that's the way it is.

I remember coming home, vaguely aware that the Iowa primary was that night (which is funny now since I have followed every other one). I turned on my laptop to check my email, and there, right there on the yahoo homepage....Obama wins Iowa.

I still get chills thinking about it. I got a chill then. It was the first time that I ever entertained the thought that he might have a shot. I called my mom. I called my grandmother. I went to the Obama homepage and donated money. I will never forget that night.

To sadmom, I'm having the same problem. I purchased it for my grandson for Christmas and also to try it for myself. I write science fiction and a lot of artwork that I figured the pen would be helpful with.
Same problem, If I try to open the program I get only they Fly symbol and have to use task manager to shut it down. I have been in contact with Leapfrog, but so far haven't received a fix. I actually got more / better help by emailing them, rather then a phone conversation. Hopefully they will find an answer.

Hilarious. I think UPS could only do something if it was false advertising. I'm fairly certain one giant Fedex truck could hold two of those little UPS trucks. I've got a fairly high percentage coming in on browsers that don't handle ems or percentages (which I'd prefer to use).
My choice is between pixels, no font size or putting up a cgi script -- with cookies -- to let people choose their look.
I'd prefer the script, but it is a lot of work to do multiple stylesheets.

I've got about 10% of my readers coming in on 4.x browsers (mostly NS 4.x). I even get hits from one (I'm assuming it's only one) reader coming in on a Win3.1 with MSIE 3.x. I've got 40%+ coming in on MSIE 5x.
MSIE 3.x is easy to handle (it uses my print stylesheet) but NS 4 is buggy on em/ex and percentages. MSIE 4x and 5x are buggy on keywords. I can lock out NS4 for windows and use percentages or em/ex, but I can't lock out NS4 for Mac, and it is buggy too.
Sigh.

I find that quiz pretty amusing. It always puts me on the left side of libertarian but (from the assumptions I can see they are using) if they asked a few more questions, or phrased their questions a bit differently, I could end up in any one of their areas.

I took Owen's quiz too -- and scored a six -- with four questions where I didn't like either answer. The problem with all of these quizzes is the underlying assumptions.

People don't fit into neat little pigeonholes, no matter how much we want them to.

Thanks, Bee, for this very useful blog, and to everyone for their comments above-- all very intersting and affirming with respect to the work I'm doing these days.

My quick comment is that I find the transcript useful not only in terms of its content (of course), but as an process-based example of what technology does for communities of practice. I know my teachers will be fascinated when I show them this transcript, as it will be their first glimpse of online communities in action.

At first, I expect they will focus on the seeming chaos of people coming and going, smiling, hugging, greeting, etc... But, on second glance, one sees that this is very similar to a F2F gathering, with all of its complex nonverbal communication, solidarity builiding, etc. Finally, one sees that there is real content flying around, only we can review it, reread it, catch it in ways one does not find in F2F meetings.

So exciting. Thanks again.

hi pinkpau I don't think you know me, I've come to know about your blog thru my friend, and that is quite a studied review on dvc.

i agree with the totally uncalled for 'sofia-cryptex-killing'. the atbash cipher was the best part of the book. and they just ran through the anagrams, urgh. i dont think anyone who hasnt read the book understood that.

but, really, people are comparing it too much to the book. of course the book is better. Since when has a movie been more successful than the book it was based on?

it is hard to convey the intensity and the impact of the book's meaning onto the screen when so many parties are offended by its release. To me, as a movie, it was tame but maybe it was exactly the kind of boring and unprovocative movie the producers might have wanted it to be.

I'm not touching on any sensitive strings here, but imagine if you were a Christian or a Catholic watching the movie and the bare, almost crude contradiction of the Church's stand about mary magdalene and Jesus was laid down full blast, how would you take it?

to viewers, just enjoy the movie and stop comparing it to the book, because the book has a more intellectual ground compared to the movie's grandiose and drama.

well I could post a short one, that doesn't really prove anything. A computer guy came by today to fix my computer, but he left to go get a disk to reinstall something or something like that. So as of right now my computer is still all jacked :P

I think that photo stealer thing is a pretty crazy program. They could take all our drivers license photos and match it up with store video cameras, spooky. I wonder if the technology could trace you back to when you were a child, or even a baby. You're facial features stay the same in relation to each other throughout the years (with the exception of severe accidents) so can it match up childrens pics wiht the adults?

I like the idea of being about to access old websites. Then I could find my old portfolio and just republish it! that would be splendid! Im going to see if I can access that site tomorrow maybe (Im super busy all day today) but Im glad that I have visited your site again to read through your current brain tinkerings, good luck again!

First off- It's great that you still keep in touch with old HS friends, even though it's infrequent. I recently signed up with Facebook and got back in touch with some old friends from a while back, and it's so odd to see where everyone is with their lives: Having babies, getting married, etc. It seems so long ago that we were all getting together after school for football games, and at the same time- it sometimes seems like it was just the other day.

You have to wonder, now that everyone's all grown up, how they got to be who they are today. I'm a prime example of the juxtaposition that you were speaking of: I was the shy, reserved, self-doubting band geek that could play a few instruments and did well in school, but was so quiet that only a few select people even heard me speak at all. I was the poster child for low self-esteem, and used rampant intellectualism and band practices as my coping mechanisms. I had no clue who I was, and neither did anyone else.

And now- well, I grew up. I stopped staring at the ground when I walked and started looking people right in the eye. Moved to NYC, got my degree in Psychology, earned some success in the corporate world, and just got over it all. Kept playing music, but stopped playing just to myself. Oh, and yeah- flat ironed my hair and got some damn highlights. :) A lot changed, but the core of me definitely stayed the same, and has provided ample framework to the person I am today, and for that- I am thankful. :)

You know, it's kind of funny. Durring the 80's my father was laid off from one of the big companies and if it wern't for having family that were in a better position sending us money just cause they wanted to help and friends that showed my mum about dumpster diving, we would have been homeless and starving. Now my sister are back at it cause it allows us to spend money on other things. We have our favorit grocery stores we go to. We do the back door shopping on Saturday nights then what we didn't find, we go front door shopping. Once I get my computer up and running again, I'm going to try the cans behind a couple of the local clothing stores an sell it on ebay or something. I do this for 3 basic reasons:

Dumpster diving saves me cash that can be better put to use helping my parents with their financial issus.

It can earn me some cash when I can sell the stuff I dont have someone to make use of cheap to people on ebay that might have to do with out if I don't.

last, it keeps good usable foodstuffs out of land fill where it would only rot and make greenhouse gas if I didn't nab it.

Other things to think of:

make sure that you find some way to share the wealth. It's a basic and universal law that what you put out comes back to you. Even if it's just finding a bundle of flowers in the back of a kroger you can clean up and give to brighten someone's day, share the rewards.

Also, what my sister and I do is we have a ratty old broom and a big industrial dust pan on one of those long sticks that we cart around with us in the back of the van to make it a bit easier to clean up when we are done.

EPEAT is not as great as you're making it out to be. It is industry regulated and the companies themselves decide their own score. I would trust the Greenpeace score card more than EPEAT.

by no means am I taking up for him, but what about "innocent until proven guilty" and for all of those that want to talk about him cheating on his wife, lets not forget that the wife knew about it, and still stayed with him..again, i don't know what to believe because I'm an attorney, a prosecutor no less, and I go on facts, not media attention, or recent cases bearing the same resemblence. The fact of the matter is all of those who are already putting him "to death" are already hurting the case. His attorney will bring everything, everything into account, and if and when he's found guilty, he can appeal because of an impartial jury due to blogs like these. You want him convicted, shut your mouth and stay out of it. It's people like you that ruin cases and make my job harder.

Look I think everyone deserves a pay raise but when Merit Comp employees received nothing for 4 years and this year rec only 100, 150, 200 dollars monthly distributed evenly through out each agency. Most of which fall into the $100 to $150 range I do not think it is fair. They received a raise & a COLA last year and Merit Comp received nothing. They do not recieve a COLA.

When can I vote on my raise?

Agree about the whole Vogue thing. Seems every magazine I pick up has more ads then anything else so I'm trying REALLY hard not to buy any at all. Try ELLE next month - I find that it's much more inspired lately. Also - How gorgeous is Lori Loughlin, no?? Can't believe she was on Full House!!

I hate to say it, I think you may just be a shopaholic!! But on the bright side, you make my problem look so much less severe!! You are living my hubby's dream. He grew up on his grandparents farm and has always wanted to live on a farm or a farmlike setting.

You have had an extremely tough year. I think you really are doing what God wants you to do. Living on a farm allows you to focus on the here and now and what is important. What a blessing. Though I know it certainly comes with many challenges as well.

I'm going to be the naive one here but why can't we be just plain ol' American. "Race" does not exist, black people and white people in America have basically the SAME culture, more or less. Mixed, biracial, black or white are absurd terms because we're all Americans first. Do Puerto Ricans divide each other by what color they are, no, there are Puerto Ricans first. The same goes to the rest of Latin America. Their Culture supercedes the white/black dichotomy.

But Alas, this is America and people are very good at dividing each other.

Can someone explain to me how a "mixed" person in America celebrates both white and black heritages when both white and black people were born in America and grew up in essentially the SAME culture. Technically, we would be celebrating American heritage.

I'm going to throw out some food for thought but I just realized that the label "biracial, multiracial, or one race" term are always used when a person has a black parent. I've never seen any celebrity of other mixed parentage get asked are they biracial,multiracial, or one race. Keanu Reeves has a white parent and a asian parent, most people see him as white on first impression but there is no hoopla to what he identifies as.

Why does this constant questioning of self-identification always come up when there is a black parent involved?

Just a quick thought but the essence of the One Drop Rule has nothing to do with what heritages you have. The One Drop Rule was done to 1) maintain the continuation of slave labor in America since people could no longer import African slaves. 2) Not being able to inherit the white father's wealth. 3) Promote the racist ideology of White purity. 4)Maintain the social and economic structure of white privilege. One Drop Rule has nothing to do with heritage but everything to do with power and resource allocation in this country.

Being called "Black" should bring up the question of What it means to be "White" in America. There is an idealistic thought out there that maybe a multiracial category or whatever category other than black that maybe white privilege will lessen or the ideology of white purity will be erased or bridge the divide but we see Latin America is much more mixed and yet the elite is still majority European descent & they still hold most of the economic power, in addition to extreme colorism (Watch any Latin Channel/Movie).

It's not the categories that is the problem, it's the association or stigma that comes with it. Starkitty said: "I cringe when people make such a big deal over the complexion and hair texture of my sons. I don't want them to be objectified or think they are better than Black children who look Black". Good point which brings up the question why no one seems to be questioning or at least challenging why a skin color/tone regardless of heritages evokes an association or stigma that may determine how someone's life plays out.

Fathers or at least a dominant male figure is important to have in a child's life. People forget that Obama had his grandfather so he did have a male role model around him. IMO, A male role model gives boys someone to identify with, set standards, and teach how to be a man. Good fathers/male role models give girls' proper boundaries, can influence her self-esteem and influence she sees herself especially in regards to other men.

In my opinion, I can't be proud of something I had no choice in. A skin color is simply a skin color and too many people like the KKK place too much emphasis on their skin color and their supposed superiority.

What about parents who transracially adopt? Are they not good parents too? What children need first and foremost are loving, caring, and understanding parents. If a child is significantly different from one or both parents, it helps if the parents are more sensitive to the child's needs/concerns and does everything in their power to raise children with a strong healthy sense of identity but then again, that applies to ALL parents with children.

I'm merely stating that the sample size for African Americans polled in the CNN exit poll were too small to accurately determine how black people voted.

10% of 2240 respondents in the CNN exit poll were AA, that leaves 224 black people.

The poll did not bother with black men because their numbers were significantly irrelevant which is 4% or 90 black men. That left black women which were about 6% or 134 black women

With such a small sample, the numbers are simply skewed and I don't believe it accurately reflected the black population as a whole.

It should be a much lower percentage had CNN gotten a larger sample.

The fact is Prop 8 passed but
also based on the CNN exit poll, the level of religiousity, conservatism, age, and level of education played a far greater role in determining yes or no vote and for people to put the bulk of the blame on black people as a race without taking into account other factors is wrong.

The most direct comparison that can be made about the issue of Gay marriage is not with the Civil Rights Movement but with the Supreme court case: Loving v. Virginia(1967) which struck down the ban on IR relationships.

The gay community could also cite in Court that Prop 8 violates the 14th amendment which states:

"No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws".

This movement for gay rights is going to take alot time and effort. Remember, people did not just wake up one day and decide segregation was wrong. Public opinion had to be swayed over a long period of time in favor of the Civil Rights cause.

That does certainly exist. White men who have to have "flava" or be wiggers in order to date black women is a HUGE stereotype that I have consistently heard from black men, white men, and some black women themselves. It also may be part of the reason why white men are afraid to approach black women.

Stereotyping goes both ways as well. Alot of people including black folks have preconceived ideas of what constitutes black and how black women should act.

Honestly, for black women who are truly truly interested in WM like a guy for being themselves and not pretending to be something he's not.

I completely agree. My one child who sucked his thumb was the BEST sleeper. He slept through the night by 10 weeks. Awesome. And it is just the most natural thing in the world. AND it is so stinking adorable!!!!!

I agree! I love thumbsuckers! My one thumbsucker was also my BEST sleeper as a baby and I think it was because he could comfort himself. I loved it!

Those are all incredibly stressful and worrisome things, so of course you are going to be upset once in a while. If you didn't, that wouldn't be normal.

I've had lots of people ask if it was OK to put a return address - I told them definitely, if they were comofortable with that, to feel free to do so. On the flip side, every now and then, once in a while, I run accross someone uncomfortable putting their return address on there for whatever reason.
