Often it's high numbers of bullets because officers put a whole clip (or two officers put two whole clips) in the air as fast as they can pull the trigger. While I believe that it's tragic that people get killed this way, it's more so that the most dangerous thing a cop can do is a routine traffic stop (as proved to the CHP again not long ago). Yes there are cases where the cops are wrong, yes there are cases where the cops are abusing their position; and in those cases the cops need to be dealt with though the proper procedures. They do however need to defend them selves and you do that dropping the individual who is threatining their lives. I will also note that dead with 2 bullet holes and dead with 2 million bullet holes is still dead, and when cops are shooting, and shooting to kill why count bullets?

Re: And the winner is…

Mostly because he's a slacker......

Or is it that his ego is writing checks his body can't cash......

Re: Canada threatened by al Qaeda

It's al Qaeda if you have one Christian in your country and you tollerate them then you have a “fanatical adherence to Christianity". I live in CA where the teachers union and the prison guards union have more power then an other org in the state (including the govenment). It's sick when they out spend on political ad all other groups by more then 10x and in many cases the people they "represent" dis-agree with them. They teachers and prison guards have no option to opt-out of the union and often times pay dues of over $350 a month that support these campaigns. When the garbage collectors were on strike it was a union organized strike, any garbage collector NOT striking was exhiled from the union, and therefor fired as thy can only hire union members. I was reaing about 1 garbage collector who showed up for work and has now found that he is in-elegiable for many jobs (garbage collector, truck drive, and many skilled labor jobs) because they UNIONS have black-listed him. Seem like Unions have in many ways out-lived there usefulness. I will also point out that so few people have 100% company paid benifits any more that I would argue that that i inappropreate and a good argument AGAINST unions in my point of view. You should be responsible for a portion of your health care just like the other 80% of americans.

Re: Unions: Collective bargaining trumps national security

Yes, so I'm used to having a spell checker....i beileve that I made my point. Why attack my spelling/grammar and not my argument.

I'm not saying you should pay your employeer back. I'm saying that people should have to pay a portion....the fact that more of it is being paid by employees is in may way going to push changes. When people's premiums are paid by the Company and they never need to pay much because it's the "big, bad insurance company" that has to pay they don't really realize that it's the health care costs that are out of control. I think that people being reuired to pay is in part a good thing....it's going to drive the health-care revolution that needs to happen in the next 10 years....i think that unions have prevented this from happening 10-15 years ago and have by and large HURT thequality of health care for all american thought their over-zelous and short-sighted "protection" of their members.

You also chose to ignore the rest of my argument.....then agin I suppose like any good sheep as long as you get someone else to pay you are willing to accept it blindly now matter how sub-standard it is........

Re: Ask Me Weekend #4

How much wood would a wood chuck chuck if a wood cuhck could chuck wood?

Re: Ask Me Weekend #4

What's a cubit?

Re: Cool it, Tarzan

Just remember as much as you dis-like and dis-approve of his actions if you hit him it will be YOUR ass getting arrested for Vehicular Manslaughter. This defines three distinct categories... and assigns a distinct relationship between two of the three....This does however leave the question....of where in this hierarchy Loving and NOT loosing falls in... So the question is not State of Love Life, but the state of Love and that requires a prioritized list, which we have yet to really agree on. It has been increasing, but there is some discussion as to weather it really is the highest it's ever been or not, but it's not a huge sticking point because even if it has ever been higher, it's gone way up. However I would question man made hydrocarbon burning being the ONLY source. I have heard one interesting argument. For ~100 years we put out EVERY forest fire we could as fast as we could. This prevented the release of CO2. Now we are letting them burn, we are even setting some prescribed burns, thereby releasing the CO2 in these dead trees. Does this account for ALL the increase? No, but it's a part of it. It's hubris to assume that we can out guess nature, as we have seen it set fires for a reason and we screwed with that for WAY too long.

On your fact number two. There is some question about that. First there is some question of if the locations that the sensors are in is still valid: http://www.dailytech.com/New+Scandal+Erupts+ove... some of sensors have had suburbia grow up around them and are getting less then ideal data. There's also controversy over some of the "new" points actually being "old" points due to a Y2K bug: http://www.dailytech.com/Blogger+finds+Y2K+bug+... so again it may not be as clear cut as some people want us to think.

Now given all that I am not going to be arrogant enough to say global warming doesn't exist. I believe that there is good evidence that it does; just not as much evidence as some people would like to claim and really not enough to adopt the extremist attitude that some people have.

I would also like to point out that 100 years ago, the population finished doing a long slow increase from 200 million people at ~1CE to ~2 billion people in 1920. The growth was fairly linear up till ~1910 or so. At that point advances in medicine and technology made keeping people alive and healthy ALOT easier. There are those that say the "turning point" was in the late 1800s when Pasteur confirmed germ theory of disease, and gave more credibility to vaccinations (which had been around since the 1700s but was a dangerous and often fatal practice until Pasteur made advances here. Some would argue that the "turning point" was in 1910 when the first antibiotic was released into the market. However it's likely a combination of the two. So the long slow steady growth stopped because the mortality rate of children dropped sharply and then people also started to not die from common illnesses due to better treatments. Also people knew better how top prevent thing from spreading (like washing hands and not touching dead things). These were just natural progressions that lead to more people. The fact that these developments line up with increase in CO2, the industrial revolution, the beginning of environmental data collection, and a whole host of other things does not necessarily constitute a correlation.

I think we should make changes to have less impact on the environment, but I also believe that the data presented to the American (and world) public is simplistic, full of inaccuracies, and designed to push an agenda. It's sad that too many people don't see the house of card that's being presented to they and don't ask to see more data. There's good evidence that we need to make changes, but not enough for the drastic reaction some people want.

I for one would chose an alternative fuel car if it met my needs and was not more expensive . However when I bought my jeep a few years ago there was not a vehicle that i liked that was alternative fuel. I won't buy one of those small, underpowered vehicles that they make now. The underpowered by the way is intentionally, it's how the auto industry held back this revolution in technology, for years that intentionally linked small, underpowered, and expensive with "fuel efficient". This is now hanging and that's good. It's just unfortunate that it took so long (and so many H2s) to get here. Calling them immigrants only re-enforces the myth that the "belong" here. I think that the decision to call them immigrants instead of aliens was one that many people made intentionally to help further the idea that they are OK here. Please stop playing into that and call them what they are illegal aliens. The cute alliteration of "illegal immigrant" causes people to forget that we are talking about people who have already, and everyday continue to, break federal law.

Re: NaBloPoMo?

If done correctly you could kill two birds with one stone. The telecoms do not want that.

Secondly the Senate Bill clarifies language to make something that was previously a gray area expressly legal and says that it was always legal so no-on can be held liable for acting so. Yes one could have waited for the judicial branch of the government to have a case and then rule on it, but it is also the prerogative of congress to pass another bill (which the executive branch can sign into law) that clarifies an earlier law without waiting for congress. Remember that the judicial branch only interprets that laws that congress wrote and the executive branch made into laws. Even if the judicial branch interprets a law one ay, congress is free to take another pass at it. and make the new law retroactive. In this case the Senate is trying prevent the telcos from paying lawyers a LOT of money to have a judge rule. Unless a law is unconstitutional, which is a whole other ball game, congress can presents to the president pretty much any law they want (the can present those too, but it's usually not a good idea).

Thirdly: This passed because the Senators in opposition to it believed that the best course of action at present was to obtain from voting, and to let the house or representative, which is still looking at this, to make the decisions. Remember that the way congress is organized, by design, is that the house is more in touch with the people and the senate is more of the long-term looking body. This is in part decided by the size of the two groups ans well as the term lengths. The House, in which you need to be reelected every two years is MUCH more sensitive to the people they represent then those in the senate who are there for 6 ears. The Senate members who have been fighting this issue believed that they could not sustain a filibuster and that it would be counterproductive to try. At present the FISA act will expire Saturday night. This leave the house with 3 options. 1) Pass a bill that matches the Senate's 2) Pass a bill that only differs from the Senates in the retroactive immunity part (which the president has already said he would veto) or 3) allow the FISA to expire. Having nothing passed in the Senate would mean that it would be impossible to even present the President with a low before this weekend. If the huse act's now they can make it the President's fault the current law expires ("We gave the president most of what he asked for and he vito'ed it. Who's fault is that?!?").

Fourth. Remember that not all courts make the right call. If a JURY decides against the telcos it could then go to the appeals court, and then the SC, and as it stands now this practice is STILL in a legal gray area because the law, as written, does not specify. This takes a lot of time in courst that are already over worked, if Congress and the Executive branch want this to be legal why waste court time, especially if they might make it legal even after the court rules.

I think the REAL moral here is not what the telcos did, but how congress can pass bill and the president can pass laws that are so ambiguous. They really need to make it clear what they mean the first time and avoid this whole thing.

Also note that Hillary, who has spoken against this, decided to skip the vote, where she could have made a difference, so that she could be campaigning.

Re: Discuss: FISA telecom immunity

I feel like I'm talking to my self again.

Re: Avoiding NASA’s Greatest Regret

Can I suggest that you read this . Richard Feynman was asked to be on the Presidential commission investigating the Challenger's fatal mission. It talks in parts about why it's flawed, why we still fly, and why many people mistake past success and safety for an indicator of future performance. You know me, I'm a space junkie, but i also don't like the fact that currently the Space Shuttle is our only vehicle. I am appalled by what Speaker Pelosi has been, and continues to do to NASA. I would love to see Constellation and Orion get a LOT more funding. However let's not over-estimate how safe te space shuttle is to fly. Is it more dangerous in 2013 then in 2010? No. If the first 5 times you played Russian roulette you won does that make playing it 5 more times a good idea? Some of this is made clear much better by the late Dr. Feynman in that Presidential Commission Report Appendix then I ever could. Please read his report and know that he spent 6 months on this commission looking into NASA and that accident and found that there were some major flaws in their safety protocols and culture.

Re: Ask Me Weekend #6

When are you going to get tired of the frozen north and take the soon-to-be-spouce of yours to live in a nice warm climate?

Re: Ask Me Weekend #7

So now that you are married, who's going to control the finances? :)

Re: Ask Me Weekend #7

Why do an ask me weekend if your not going to answer? ;)

Re: Ask Me Weekend #7

Since our host is apparently not answering I will answer for him:

I think the midnight runs for garbage plates and cheep hookers are not nearly as important as they were before. I agree that late harvest are a good substitute. Icewines are one of the things I miss about upstate new york. I can get them here in CA, but very few are local. Usually I buy them at Beverages and more. Being in New York, in can have wine shipped these days, but there are limits on how much and the winery has to jump throught a ton of hoops, which limits a lot of really good places. Personally I also drink quite a bit of port. If you like late harvets try and find a good bottle of Zin Port, or Barbara Port. One of the nice things about where I live now is i'm right between Gold Country, Lodi, and Napa/Sonoma. I can get a ton of really good local wines here. I have been told recently that there are some places up the hill that do make an ice wine, but I have yet to track them down.

Re: Video Game Nostolgia

I miss M.U.L.E. on the C-64!

Re: On emails and comments…

Ken agrees with Yvonne here.
