in Will Health-Care Innovation Survive Obamacare? on Will Wilkinson
"Prostrate seed implants were given up on in the U.S. in the late 70s, but revived thanks to European experiments in the 80s. Hip replacements happen everywhere. Tikosyn is available everywhere. This is why Glenn Reynolds is completely unreliable."

You appear to have missed the point - no one questions that Europe and Asia are able to get something of a free ride by making cheap, generic copies of American drugs. Tikosyn is available everywhere because Pfizer, an American drug company, payed for the research that created it as well as the testing that proved it's efficacy and safety. Pfizer did so in hopes of making a profit. Remove that profit incentive by making government responsible for deciding what is needed and what isn't, and Tikosyn most likely wouldn't exist.

KJ You don't know much if you think Drug companies are developing drugs and making profits only in America. 5 of the top 7 revenue generating drug companies are in Europe. Now it may be the case that the U.S. is helping customers in Europe pay less for drugs but why anyone things that's a positive is beyond me.

So spare me simplistic thinking about removing the profit incentive. Pfizer will find plenty of ways to make oodles of money making great drugs even if the U.S. adopted single-payer tomorrow. The U.S. would just pay for less of it then it does now. Or we can continue to be the world's fool when it comes to financing high drug prices.

in From Microsoft: C# and CLI under the Community Promise - Miguel de Icaza on Miguel de Icaza's blog
Microsoft has demonstrated about as completely as a company possibly could that their word cannot be trusted. If they do decide not to sue, there is one reason and one reason only--they think it will be better for them if they don't. To me this seems like a big risk to take for a technology of questionable utility.

migueldeicaza The Community Promise is legally binding, you probably had no time to read the FAQ as you were having a panic attack caused by an abuse of troll pills:

http://www.microsoft.com/interop/cp/default.mspx

From the document:

Q: Is this Community Promise legally binding on Microsoft and will it be available in the future to me and to others?

A: Yes, the CP is legally binding upon Microsoft. The CP is a unilateral promise from Microsoft and in these circumstances unilateral promises may be enforced against the party making such a promise. Because the CP states that the promise is irrevocable, it may not be withdrawn by Microsoft. The CP is, and will be, available to everyone now and in the future for the specifications to which it applies. As stated in the CP, the only time Microsoft can withdraw its promise against a specific person or company for a specific Covered Specification is if that person or company brings (or voluntarily participates in) a patent infringement lawsuit against Microsoft regarding Microsoft’s implementation of the same Covered Specification. This type of “suspension” clause is common industry practice.
KeithCu That is ridiculous. Microsoft is a hard-charging company, as is Sun, Apple, etc. But these legal documents mean something -- if words mean something. Even if they did try to sue now, these announcements would completely undercut their case.

If you wear a tinfoil hat, you are too insane to be posting comments on websites.

Microsoft is not the big evil company you think it is. It is filled with smart people who go to work every day simply trying to make software better. It wouldn't have succeeded otherwise.

There are multiple reasons for them not to sue; I already mentioned a reason below: it helps adoption of C# in general.

in The Troubles of Crowdsourcing: How Do You Keep a Secret? on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
I don't understand how not putting the news up actually helps. Is the idea that turning it into a story makes him a bigger martyr and so more likely to be killed as a political statement? Isn't there a risk in teh other direction, too? If it remains unpublicized then isn't it easier for a guy to just 'disappear.' The idea that some select few can decide the best course of action, seems to imply those in charge have some sort of divine judgement. At what point is his being kidnapped an acceptable loss, and who decides that?

'I doubt that anyone would question the validity of what Jimmy Wales did here; if you can save a life by breaking or bending the rules a little, refusing to do so would be irresponsible.'

I would in fact question that. Sometimes a principle stands higher than a human life. We send people to war, to die, for principles that are greater than one man, or even thousands of men. Breaking the rules to save a life is not in fact universally a good thing.

While I do not know the details of this story or this reporter's situation, I am highly suspicious that keeping a secret is universally a good thing, either for him, or for ideals that are greater than one man.

in Threading models: So many different ways to get stuff done. on time to bleed by Joe Damato
Can you explain the threading models a little more? For example, I can write a simple userland package which takes advantage of multiple cores, but blocking calls will block the kernel thread and until the blocking call completes there's one less core available to run the program. Thus, it looks like it sits kinda half-way between 1:N and M:N.

ice799 Perhaps you could explain how you'd implement a simple userland package that takes advantage of multiple cores?

on the one hand there are the recipients of u/e benefits.
on the other hand, the states write the checks. it is interesting that some states are running dry.
http://globaleconomicanalysis.blogspot.com/2009...
California is paying out so much for jobless benefits and collecting so little in payroll taxes that its unemployment insurance fund could be $17.8 billion in debt by the end of 2010, according to a new report from the state Employment Development Department.

This latest fiscal crisis won't immediately affect the 1.1 million Californians now collecting benefits because the state is using an interest-free federal loan to cover their checks.

Enjoyed reading your posts, got here by Googling "california, prop 1a".
This is a very informative article with lots of good details. I would object to the premise of "both sides bad".
While not putting virtue on either side, how can anyone not have noticed that the Dems have spent in good times and bad. Now the only choices being given are more taxes (which won't be enough and they won't stop spending) or loss of fire-fighters, police and teachers. There has been no effort that I've seen to cut back waste and fraud, let alone cut back for the good of the public. There is only Dems/public-employees/news-media repeating over and over that we need higher taxes and Repubs are at fault for obstructing payments to widows. Puh-leeze. It's time to stop enabling an out of control Legislature.
If only Arnold had done as promised and "cut up their credit cards".
Sigh. I have kids in public schools, it hurts to pull the trigger. But this spending has got to stop.

in Sickles High School Yearbook Photo: 16yo Admits “I Wasn’t Wearing Panties” on The Inquisitr
How dare Mommy demand that the SCHOOL reprint that yearbook because she could not be bothered to teach her little girl about wearing panties in public?! If she wants a new yearbook printed then she has to foot the bill - or make her daughter get a job and pay for it herself.
