Watched about five or ten seconds of that crazy women video. No idea what it's about but we have a word for that: 'crapule', vulgar moronic retards that aren't worth my time or even the camcorder battery power invested in them. I don't know why the security guard didn't just floor them and cuff them... You're right about the guy shooting the thing too.

Oh, and Creative? I have no words, really (strange for a blogger huh?) but of course I want to thank you and Alec for organizing this. True, it wasn't the easy, traditional meme, but that's what pushes us forwards and that's what you've done here.

I really think Leisa (congratulations!) put it best when she said: you need the network! I don't think any of us really have the ambition to become professional A-list bloggers (at least I don't, not with my personal, self-contained blog). But if there's one thing that motivates us to keep going at it, it is this opportunity of sharing thoughts and ideas (and often making friends along the way). Initiatives like this make it clear that is indeed the central function of the blogosphere. Create and share.

It was a joy participating and reading everyone's entries. I myself will certainly be following up on these bloggers, especially the brave Singaporeans who are at the core of the free flow of information. Hats of to you, chaps.

Before I turn this into an unsolicited guest post, I’ll just say: I’ll get my camera out and get snapping!

Cheers all!

Re: Rocketboom makes $85,000 per week!?!

I've seen you do videos, but will you? Begin vlogging, that is.

Good eyecatcher for a title though, but you've not really answered that question. Is it true? Probably. Are you surprised? I am, especially considering their first advert was estimated to be worth 8,000 when they had about 130,000 viewers about half a year ago.

I haven't watched in a while, but if their rate has doubled to 16,000 and they'd have an advert every day, that would be about right. Only, I can't remember seeing them. Maybe they've been doing them in too weird a fashion?

Re: Is popular culture really making us dumber or smarter?

And now there's even Brain Age for the DS! We'll be saved after all.

As a more serious answer: I think we may be growing smarter collectively. Mastering all knowledge has been impossible ever since after Leonardo's age. Now it's become impossible to know even the greater part of a single tiny discipline. And yet new tools and technologies are emerging everyday.

Yes, we're finally becoming the cybernetic neural network ;-)

(I might have to think some more and work out this thought, but at least it's the gist of it. A lot of money for a little beep.

Flock? That's a hilarious suggestion; yes, got it yesterday. Looks good but I'm going to need some serious adjusting if I ever am going to use it as default. I adore the blogging and Flickr integration, but I keep wondering why del.icio.us is in there and BlinkList isn't. I use this and like it very much, but it seems nobody else does. I hardly ever see it mentioned anywhere. Does it suck that much? I might just go back to del.icio.us after all.

Re: My 29th birthday surprise…

Aw, birthdays... they're not what they used to be.

Many congratulations, though, Kevin. That's sad really. Not just because the blogosphere and all is so cool; just that I couldn't even do without the basic web anymore (research, company info etc.)

I'm amazed at Australia. 50+ percent penetration, that's impressive. Europe I found remarkable as well. Makes sense though if you imagine somewhere in the Ukraine - not a lot of PC there, I fear.

Are you doing a post with your thoughts about this later maybe, or will it remain just this link?

Re: Fabchannel: Watch some really fabulous live concerts!

Cool. It's Mr Frank Loh, who "spoke on 'Telephone Communication' at the convention of the Singapore-Malaysia Institutes of Engineering". I hope you'll forgive me for thinking that was too much information for my acual post...

Actually, Theroux isn't that kind for Singapore and doesn't seem to think much of it. He actually lived there for three years, but "like everone I knew" there, he had "just been waiting for his chance to get out". He also calls it "politically as primitve as Burundi".

Mind you, Theroux, though a great travel writer, is a nag in ALL of his books, so...

Hope this helps. I've just now posted about this. I do prefer BL as well. Sure I can use their bookmarklet in my toolbar, but that's just so daft when 'starring' a site and then having to aditionally 'blink' it. If you've found a way let me know. It'll be sad, but I'd change.

PS Like your blog - content and look. I've encountered this problem in English before. In Dutch the word for 'appointment' (afspraak) can mean both a business as an informal meeting that you have agreed on. In its dimunitive (afspraakje) it tends to imply more of a 'romantic' get-together. Dutch now also has the English intruders 'meeting' for business meetings and 'date' for the romantic equivalent.

So what would you say if you had a date / meeting / appointment with a friend for cinema and drinks?

I was great fun though and that's what counts no? I like rain in films, on pictures, in poems and songs, I like looking at rain and listening to it patter on my window pane when I'm in bed in the dark - I even find it grotesquely funny when I see people running from a downpour and I'm snug inside (pinkie to mouth); I just hate being in it, when I need to be somewhere, when I'm fresh out the shower and the moistness already permeates every fibre of my garb, when a brolly doesn't help a bit because of the gusts of wind that soak your feet and legs and my hair sticks to my face from the dampness that is everywhere, and everyone in the room smells of wet dog. (As a matter of fact, it started yesterday at eight or so and today at noon it's still going on - I never knew there was so much of it).

Tell me, perhaps you do like all that? Good god. The first thing I saw was exploding trucks. If you've never seen the original, try and find it in your specialty video store 'cause it's a masterpiece of mystery and suspense and you get to see Christopher Lee as an occultist hippie. It is more like: 'Why is it that we don't...' I agree that is the ambiguity in the question and the reason why it's fascinating to examine.

Personally, I find it very comforting that there could be something so basic and fundamental that stops us from behaving like this. More fundamental than morality, because I don't always have much trust in that - it's a quirky value at best if you ask me.

In the end, of course, homeless people (and my heart truly bleeds for them no matter what) have nothing to do with the query investigated here. And shooting them is even less of realistic suggestion. Glad you saw that.

But thanks for commenting, Leon. The picture looks better than it does in reality and we only have a 'pre-metro' system, meaning the regular street trams go underground when they reach the city centre. He should read more Lifecruiser perhaps and get in a good mood.

As far as Marx is concerned, that's a great idea to churn over. Marx of course wasn't against production or even consumption, so why not? As long as it wouldn't further antagonize the classes that is, hehe. We just get these insanely simple drawings that are supposed to be universally understood. I have to admit they are on the obscure side sometimes, but most of their stuff is pretty straightforward to piece together.

Any ideas if you can watch those videos online somewhere? I'd love to see that.

Re: IKEA Rocks But I Never Go

Oi, Fred. Glad you liked the post.

I myself am eager to get to the new TG season. They've really been going nuts the last time. Glad, though, that the Hamster will turn out okay (although it remains unclear what his plans are after this terrifying event).

As for your Q, I really have no idea. Perhaps the lack of a large domestic manufacturer helps these people dare make the jump to investing in and creating something daring of their own? Then again, the 'Koenignogseggseggseggggabbaseggviking' is from Sweden so they have Saab and Volvo to deal with. I've been a fan of the Doctor ever since I got scared by Tom Baker. I'm no freak, though – I don't know all the episodes nor do I own four decades worth of fan material.

When the new series began after years of silence, I was immediately hooked again. Both Eccleston (2005) and Tennant (2006 - 2007) did a great job and the quality of these shows was simply brilliant.

But you have to fall for it. If you don't, there's no mending and you'll never like it. The same goes for Torchwood, I guess. I think that's a pity, not because you miss out on a larger readership (that too), but especially because it limits your interaction with the world – which is what blogging is mostly about, no?

Cuppojoe, even though I did this little tally, I too read most blogs for what they are and only then look at the author and where they come from when I get to know them a bit more. So, yeah, that's a good thing.

Smaran, where on earth does it say I consider myself American? Labelling NDNL as a 'Belgian blog' would sound strange to me because like Cuppojoe I see myself as moored in international waters. The amount of different blogs you read sounds interesting though. I tried to condense what I still remembered from her biography and what I rediscovered on the web for research, so that it covered the basics and still remained slightly interesting. Of course, that left me with little room for observations such as yours.

In fact, you may be right about this. Isn't it in the 1930s, as well, that we get to see the Freikorper culture so exalted by the Nazi's? Speaking of which, I do feel that there is a fascist streak to the Lempicka's portraits, especially the nudes. Then again, we should also acknowledge that that era was generally a fascist one – not only in Germany and not only with those who gave it any actual political thought.

As for the true hardbody, I feel we owe that more to Jane Fonda and Bo Derek. Glad you like it.

Re: Solaris. Solyaris. Thanks for the kind words.
What order to go by? That's an interesting question. Depends, really. Mine was: 2002 film - novel - 1972 film and it worked wonderfully well. The Soderbergh to get acquainted with the story and not be 'alienated' too much from the start, the novel for further 'research' and finally the Tarkovsky for the full experience.
Chronological might do, but then there's always the risk of not liking any of the film adaptations, whereas starting out with the Tarkovsky either scares you away or sets the standard for all the rest - and after a masterpiece, the rest, as we know, may look bleak... Enjoy your journey, Mike.

Re: The Long Horse Sweeps the World

Well, Mrs L, just between you and me: I really wouldn't if I were you ;-)

Re: WordPress Scares Me Senseless, Apologizes

Aidan, thanks for dropping by again and for commenting. It is strange, isn't? We're fully aware that we should read stuff before we click something and still we don't always. Must be all that crap we've taken from those Windows dialogues that numbed us.

Smaran, yep, WordPress seem like a really okay lot. I usually get that with BlinkList too, and with 9rules of course. Other companies often are like deaf and mute brutes when it comes to customer care. I've been a bit busy, so sorry for my late reply. Thanks for the compliment. It's not easy describing these films, especially the Tarkovsky one. It was especially hard to limit the info I was trying to convey. Glad you liked it.

Thanks 1,000,000 for those links and the reading list. I think I've seen the Faber one around, but those other ones will need some researching and ordering. It took me a long time, but I'm finally beginning to love Tarkovsky (it was all just a haze before), so I'm certainly going to check those out. Classics are utilities (gas and electricity), mobile phone network providers and ISPs. You'd think they'd be the forerunners on this, but no.

I often wonder how these companies (like WP, but other free services too) can actually survive. I guess they can make (are making?) a pile out of consultancy: how to do it right. A long comment is no problem whatsoever. In fact, I'm rather happy with the comments I got so far, since I expected it to be a lot worse (as is often the case with these subjects).

I'm glad you feel so terrible (I know that sounds odd) when you see stupid mistakes like that. What I tried to express here was indeed not that we all have to become scholars, but that a little care wouldn't be amiss. And I'm glad you're not like those others and felt you had to say so. Good on you. Thanks again - your comment was a pleasure to read.

Re: A Curious Search Experience with ChaCha

Thanks so much, Kerrie-Ann, for your comment. Where does it say I'm motivating people to feel superior? The word isn't even there. And where does it say the Indians and the Chinese have their noses in books to learn English? They have their noses in books to learn computing and programming and management so that they can whip our lazy asses sitting in front of the TV all day watching bloody Idols or whatever.

And *favorate is an example as I saw it. I've actually never seen *favourate, perhaps because someone who thinks of using the - ou - form wouldn't make that mistake? I don't know. Favorite, however, is an entirely valid and correct spelling of the word and in fact makes more sense than the British variant. Calling US spelling a degradation of English is something I wouldn't even dare contemplate.

As for that e-mail you sent me suggesting I should remove the word spelling from my title, I fully resent that. Just kidding? It's not even miles away from funny.

Okay, Nils, breathe now. Relax. I'm sorry if I come across a bit vexed, but I just didn't like some of the implications in your comment. As far as that - ou - thing goes, it's my understanding that that form only came about from Early Modern English onwards (c. 1600), after it had been introduced into the language as favorite, from French favorir – without any /u/.

I can't give you any sources at the drop of a hat, but if you're interested, the issue is addressed in Bill Bryson's Mother Tongue. I've come to understand that many 'British' spellings only came into being quite recently and that they're often considered 'better' or 'more correct' than American spellings, because, well, they look fancy.

However, since both spellings are widely used and accepted, none of them are really 'wrong', favorite only is more etymologically sound.

Thanks for the dialogue, Smaran; it's not an easy thing, language, but I think we need to be aware of what it all means, these changes and variations – and not just write something because we think it looks alright enough.

Re: I’m Very Confused and a Bit Scared Now

For those tracking this conversation by e-mail or RSS, I thought I'd just inform you that I added my responses to the comments themselves. I'm not that much of a techie and cleaning a keyboard isn't exactly something that'll get you on Digg these day anymore, is it? So, I thought, I'd write about the thoughts that came up while I sat there for 1 hour 15 minutes performing that mundane task. I'm happy with it and very glad you liked it too.

Aidan, I wish you lots of fun when your turn comes. You'll see it will trigger all sorts of interior monologues. Make sure you blog about them then!

Edrei, sure, books are immeasurably more fascinating, but you're right, as a form of meditation it was interesting. Perhaps I should start a small business: Zen Computer Repair?

Tylor, thanks for the visit and the comment. I liked it as well, but it still has to sink. I might write about it, but it needs some time I guess.

Adem, yeah, I remember that post. I seems that I was mistaken and that I had another film in mind. Weird. Some of those German films do look alike, don't they? Well, I definitely hadn't seen this one. If you 'like' German films that investigate the German society, I can definitely recommend Gegen die Wand (Head-On). Very harsh, but very funny at times too. Anyway, as far as those critters under my keys are concerned: they've all been evicted now!

Mrs. L, I'm trying commenting this way again to see if it works. A book? Well, I've had plenty of ideas in the past, both fiction and non-fiction. I've always wanted to do one about haunted houses in the city (no one's ever done it and there seem to be quite a few stories), even though I don't believe in it myself. Ah, maybe get my life and finances sorted first, eh? And trust me, you really don't want to see those pictures. If you keep insisting, though, I will e-mail you one. Don't come complaining afterwards, though ;-)

Doesn't look that good, does it? It's a different form of English, yes, but it'd be like saying Austrian or Swiss German are wrong, because they're not Hochdeutsch. Or saying that Suriname Dutch or Afrikaans or Pennsylvania Dutch (which is actually some form of German) are wrong.

I know, I've said it before, language is hard. Every aspect of it, grammar, etymology, even spelling, but I never tire of it. For a bit more clarification on the English - American issue and how they evolved, esp. the -or / -our thing, check out this Wikipedia paragraph on the matter. You'll see that it's wildly confusing in any case, lol.

Thanks for that link to the Word Nerds, I'm already subscribed to a few language blogs, but I didn't know that one yet. Glad you liked it and thanks so much for commenting.

Yes, it isn't just nit-picking, but, like you say, trying to be helpful. I also think it's somewhat like trying to set a standard, not of quality, but of a shared understanding.

English is spoken by so many and is undergoing so many influences, that if you want it to remain the one globally understood language (which, in the end it is), you need to agree on things. I wouldn't like trying to read an English text fifty years from now if everyone across the globe has done nothing else in those five decades but write like they wanted to because it 'wasn't important'.

I think with this globalization of economies, information and entertainment, that has become more of a necessity than ever before.

Hm, that's another post almost.

So, yes: thank you for adding to the conversation ;-)

Re: Best Blog Or Not, Just Keep At It

Thanks Aidan, I really appreciate that. I too like reading more archaic forms of English at times. I remember having an amazingly good time with Tristram Shandy for instance, where the archaisms do so much to support the irony of the story, that I wonder if we modern readers might not get more out of it than the original ones.

Should we accept this? Up to a point, yes. I think that spelling change is something we should accept for sure. I could well imagine forms like 'cant' 'dont' 'wont' become common in decades to come. After all, these apostrophes don't make much sense now either. Lowercase i for first person pronoun 'I' is something that is on its way too, I think. But like I said, when definitely and defiantly become interchangeable, we have a problem.

Re: Best Blog Or Not, Just Keep At It

Thank you Andrew. I think we can easily say you've made quite the spot for yourself too, no? I've seen people pay tons for deluxe boxes and what not and still get a messed up disc among them. Guess it's a sign of the times and just occasional bad luck. Hey, hope you do get to see the end, because although I'm not yet entirely sure whether it's a 'great' film, it certainly is very good.

Re: 13 Hours, 589 Minutes, 1724 Pages

Thanks Aidan, that hologram would be great, wouldn't it? I'm sorry your choice is that limited. We have it good I guess; something you don't always think about.

As for books about football and computers... what about this one?

From the Amazon page: "A funny, poignant and fast-moving tale of office life, drinking, drugs, friendship, love, clubs, football, computer programming and the perfect financial heist."

I just googled that myself, though, so I don't know if it's any good ;-)

Re: 13 Hours, 589 Minutes, 1724 Pages

No probs, that's just me, when I see something I want to know about it or find out if it actually exists. You're right, these photographs are more than just portraits, they do have more to them and it's only natural that we all read different things into them.

Personally, I'm not even sure yet what it is that I see in them myself. There is unease here, little 'pride' or 'patriotism' or anything you might expect from young boys on an adventure like this. I guess, in the end, the reason I posted and linked to them is not dissimilar to that of the photographer: I just wanted to show you something. And I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Re: Soldier Boys

Thank you for that link Andrew. These photographs by Papo are equally absorbing, if not more, since they are shot 'on location' so to speak. In turn, that reminds me of a documentary I saw, called Checkpoint. It's a strange, ambiguous fascination that we have with soldiers, isn't it?

Obviously I always look for images under CC. In this case, however, I reasoned that since the photographer put them up on a photography forum himself, I could show them as long as I linked to them.

The reasoning being that some kind of 'fair use' as a 'review' might apply. If he would object to that, I would obviously take them off. I have in the mean time discovered who he his (the pseudonym of Kissyfur didn't reveal all that much) and linked to there, as well. Have you had problems with this before perhaps?

Funnily enough I read a post on Lowebrow today that addresses a similar issue.

Re: Soldier Boys

Thanks Ærchie. Normally I would reply with something like 'glad you liked it' but in this case that feels out of place. I guess it moves me, then, that a post of mine reached out and registered with people. I think I know what you mean when you say it makes you guilty, but I'm not entirely certain. As far as I'm concerned, you don't seem to carry any direct responsibility and you certainly don't appear to condone many wars, so I'd say: don't feel guilty. But I still know what you mean, and guess I've felt it too.

I've spelled your name with the Æ aesc, since that is how it appears in your About section – it's a peculiar spelling. I looked in to this familiar but forgotten ligature and was remembered of the fact that beside in Latin and Old English, it also appears in Ossetic, Icelandic and Faroese (among others).

Re: An Atheist’s Christmas

Hey Volkher. Yes, I agree: it's the move from the insanity that I appreciate too, the quiet and the privacy. Those presents sound quite remarkable and your friends and family are very lucky to have you do that. I'm not buying anyone anything this year and am not expecting anything in return. Simply because I'm broke and not motivated to find, make, adapt anything in particular. They know that I will no doubt have some stroke of genius some time and surprise them during the year. Enjoy your trip back home.

Re: An Atheist’s Christmas

You're entirely welcome, Bloglily. No, family I don't have – really – and trees and presents will not be part of this year's Christmas (although the two are entirely unrelated). My friends all do have the aged parents they need to visit or are involved in passionate romances where three would be a crowd. I may be at the computer and monitor the emptiness in the blogosphere or have a DVD-fest watching obscure and elitist subtitled European films ;-) Who knows. There are four days left and a lot can happen in that time. I do hope your Christmas will be exactly what you hope for!

Re: An Atheist’s Christmas

Hey Aidan, you're right, even organized religion (whichever Church it may be) is evolving as well, and has been for years. Just look at the abandoning of Latin in RC services. It's something that is as inevitable as any other advancement in our culture, life and the tools we fill them with. Like I said, I do want Christmas (or Yuletide or 'the holidays') to keep existing. It is indeed a public holiday and everyone should have the right to close their year the way they want. I hope that goes for you too and that you have a wonderful celebration, just how you wish it to be. And as for plans, well, read the comment after Litlove's. So don't think I'll be miserable :-)

Re: 13 Hours, 589 Minutes, 1724 Pages

Hey CK, yes, I know too well how the lure of the book shop sounds myself. Often I just want to 'own' a book after I've finished with it, not let go of it and return it to some library. Nowadays, I'm not buying as much as I used to (or as I'd still like perhaps even), but I still have my 'spells'. Inevitably resulting in some volumes that remain unread for quite a while, just like you. We should be ashamed really ;-)

Re: An Atheist’s Christmas

Yup, thanks, and don't forget the great annual Christmas Day event: the new season of Doctor Who – if one is interested in that of course ;-)

Re: An Atheist’s Christmas

Thank you so much Penseroso. I don't know what's better: doing something regular, or ducking it altogether, like I did. Making the effort certainly counts and that's what I intend to do from now on. Cheers!

Re: You Don’t Fool Me, 2007

That sounds like good 'therapy', Bloglily. I've spent hours listening to this audio recording of the Iliad about a year ago. Must get me an iPod shuffle or something and take it on the road like you. I guess that's it: just go out and do stuff. If there's anything all these years gone by can teach us is that life is short. It's time to get up and act. That step two will come soon enough.

Oh, and I'm glad you finally turned to the good side and went to see 007. I'm just glad you're still around!

Let me suggest something then regarding your dilemma. In Gmail, go to Settings > Import/Export and back up your subscriptions in an OPML. Then go to Settings > Subscriptions > Select All and click the button that says Redemption, uh, Unsubscribe.

Re-import your feeds: no more guilt and a limited amount of fresh, new posts. You could still weed out a couple of feeds before or after this too.

It's called starting afresh, a popular game these early January days :-)

Thanks for dropping by and see you on the chat sometime soon, mate.

As for the Tupperware box, mm, I'd ask someone to get me something from the fridge and hope they'd be sufficiently disgusted so they'd take care of it. Problem is, I can't seem to drag myself to the cinema, preferring DVDs from the library instead. I hadn't noticed your latest post yet, so I'll be sure to pop over!

Update: I've actually just unsubscribed from BB. 70 posts overnight and all of them idiotic? What a hard life we lead ;-)

Re: This Is Not A Tech Blog

No Aidan, I like it so far. I love to learn as much as I can and read other people's perspectives and experiences. Watch out for tech news, though. Don't just rehash the stuff that's already out there. Rants are allowed if you keep complimenting me like that ;-)

True, the iPod was well ahead of its time and so is this device. Don't get me wrong: I love it. But MP3 players at that time where nowhere, phones today are rather well-established. I guess for me, it was that extreme focus on the phone aspect which disturbed me a bit. Why not market it as a kind of PDA or the portable navigator it essentially is? Of course, that way, the shouts from the crowd might not have been that enthusiastic, would they?

Re: Apple Scares Me Now, Sort Of

Well, Geoff, they're definitely on a roll and it's been a while now that there has been this renewed Apple buzz in the air. Jobs mentioning the amount of switchers was a confirmation of a trend that everybody kind of 'felt' already. But personally, I think they could keep that vibe going even if they ditched the i. MacBooks seem to do well, don't they?

And yes: Mac does rule ;-)

Re: Apple Scares Me Now, Sort Of

Good point there, Arjun. Like others have said, they could not have pulled this off without at least some preparation. And if you read Smarans post, you'll notice that he too thinks there was at least some unforeseen rush due to the hype and I agree. But let's indeed hope that regular Mac and software development does not suffer from this. I trust Apple enough to think it won't but if it does I'll be joining you in that corner. Oh, and I'll certainly pop over ;-)

Re: The Girlfriend Experience

I haven't seen any log-on place where I can go and make reservations for an avatar, but perhaps that'll only be available from next Friday. True, in Second Life the avatars are still digitized, although the people behind it are real of course. That's what makes this so strange: avatar and person are the same. Second Life is huge these days. I doubt if this art project will get as much attention. Glad you liked it though. Cheers!

Re: Why We Need Hitler – A Suggestion

Thanks Gnorb. Great contribution here. You're perfectly right about WWII being regarded as the last necessary war – it may well be. I myself have to plead guilty to a fascination with it, no doubt stimulated by the massive amount of attention that it is, rightly so, given.

The fable aspect is something to consider as well. The events then were beyond belief in scale and impact, and the fact that we do have all this audio and video of it certainly contributed to that.

You very poignantly describe the response of the world to this man and his actions. Maybe that's why he's still such a big figure as well: not only do we need him to cope, maybe we actually need him to feel good about ourselves. We dealt even with him so we can't possibly go wrong or fail again. Which of course isn't necessarily the case.

Thanks again for the great comment. It's much appreciated.

Re: Seed Guides for 21st Century Living

Ah, that would clear things up. Thanks for adding that nuance to the conversation about the evil in gods, such as Seth indeed displayed.

That quote is indeed brilliant. I should read up on that Christopher Dawson. Would you happen to know whether he said that before or after the World's Second Attempt at Suicide (1939-1945) or after? It would be interesting to know.

Re: Why We Need Hitler – A Suggestion

Thanks Freddy. I now think I should have highlighted the aspects of the icon a bit more perhaps. It's there between the lines, but you put it very well here in your comment.

It is remarkable and indeed puzzling how this image has in a way become more powerful than the actual crimes. It's become graphic, which is why it lends itself to your and others' art, be it drawing, literature or visual comedy.

I am checking out your work and site now. We are still so immersed in that war, more than we believe, I think. The fact that comparisons between the greatest holocaust (in generic terms) ever, and today's mild code orange (how very clinical we are these days), proves that I think, although it's also worrisome. In no way are we in a situation as bad as then.

Of course, that's also where all the conspiracy theories come from, comparing the New York attacks to Pearl Harbor. And why not? It almost seem all too perfect, doesn't it?

Many mentions have been made here of necessary wars and good wars. I don't believe those exist, but I understand what people imply by it. It's time we took a good look around us and get things back into perspective a bit, instead of letting ourselves being towed by exactly those ludicrous Hitler-bin Laden-Hussein comparisons.

Oh, thanks for joining in. I don't know if we decided to become civilized. No ape in his right mind, if he knew what civilization stood for (such as stress, pollution, war) would decide to choose that over a carefree existence of banana picking and chasing the girl apes. You do make a seriously good point there. Shaman is definitely a good contender and I wouldn't be surprised if many an academic would agree.

Re: The World’s Oldest Profession

Lol, it seems this is going to do the rounds then amongst interior designers. Debby Travis is going to want my hide now.

Re: The World’s Oldest Profession

Thank you. That makes a lot of sense: early responsibilities were basic and straightforward: it would figure that these were performed by several people at once and that one individual could still master severals tasks at once.

Now that you mention it, would we actually need an archaeologist for this? When it's with a comment like yours, it's also very enlightening.

As for your suggestion, story-teller kind of bumps shaman (sorry Joe) because simple accounts of events may have preceded a more complex system of beliefs. Then again, what about language? Can you tell a story without it? Can you perform a 'religious service' without it? And what is to be considered language: are a couple of grunts and gestures sufficient?

Perhaps the answer to my exercise simply is: we have absolutely no means of solving this and we'll be hmmm-ing for quite a while still.

I love your cave art and internet analogy. It's not so far off either. Cave signage is there for grabs as much as any URL is – as opposed to later actual writings, which were only distributed among a select few. I can see the cave man laptops already, not clad with Technorati or WordPress stickers, but decorated with the words Altamira and Lascaux chiseled into their stony surfaces. Great.

I'll be checking out your blog, and judging from your tag cloud I'll be digging into your bookmarks a bit as well. Thanks for sharing this and I hope I can keep you as my reader for some time. Now I must be off to think of 'witty questions' to stir the debate some more. This was enjoyable.

Re: Davos Fails to Grab Blogger Attention

Thanks Daniel, I checked that out. Someone pointed out how one of my pictures made it to the famed 'explore' page. I was flattered, but really, in the end I couldn't be bothered. It's a strange balance between wanting recognition and staying 'sane'.

I certainly don't add everyone who adds me as a contact in return. I may, when I get to know them and their style, but I simply can't have my feeds get clogged up just for the sake of being friendly. That would result in precisely the dilution of worth you describe.

As for blogrolls, I've taken drastic measures there, first distinguishing between worthy reads and real friends (well, even that is relative online) and now just listing five of them on my about page. I have to re-evaluate those as well, though. On the other hand, there are a number of blogs that I've become fond of recently and that I want people to know about as well – such as yours, now that you've settled to just the one ;-) But I'm not sure yet how I'll do this.

Re: Flickr Limitations: Chill Out

Yes, I didn't mention this because, well, I care even less, really. I too think Flickr is still the best around and if Yahoo! wants to simplify things, who could blame them? It's like saying you don't like Google because AltaVista was so much more 'old skool' or something. Things change, it happens.

Re: Flickr Limitations: Chill Out

Hi Super Rats, thanks for reading and adding to the discussion. I only read about that file size limit as well in fact. 10MB, though, I think that's pretty reasonable as well and I've not heard people complain, not even those with 8MP cameras or something.

Good you mention the user-side of things with the tags. Indeed, limiting those to 75 (which is really enough I think) will certainly make search results more interesting and accurate.

I think Flickr (and Yahoo!) are smart enough not to mess with their paying customers. They could lose them quickly enough to free services and I think they'll do anything to keep limitations within reason. It's just the people who simply like a bit of conflict who are reacting so vehemently now I feel.

Re: Flickr Limitations: Chill Out

Hey Smarr, thanks for the digg. It's at 31 now, so no front-pager I'm afraid ;-)

Talking about acquisitions, take Writely for instance. It may all be very old skool to try and sign in to Google Docs with a Writely account, but it' not gonna happen. What did happen with that was even worse, since Writely kinda disappeared for a while after the take-over and now it's gone entirely, totally absorbed. Imagine that happening to Flickr or your photos there. Wow.

On the other hand, when things did get sorted, Google was quick to make the transition go smooth. It's a mistake of Yahoo! that they waited so long I think.

Re: Flickr Limitations: Chill Out

Yeah, Anjum, I think it's just a bit of snobbery in the mix there too. If you were smart, you already switched to a Yahoo! ID right after the take-over. And you're right: if you actually are that 'old skool' you probably have a Yahoo! address somewhere anyways.

The only problem I see, is that if you really don't have one, you are 'forced' to take one and it's not going to be easy to get something like 'john@yahoo.com'. But then again, it's not like you're gonna use it for e-mail or anything else, just the sign-in, so yeah: what IS the big deal indeed?

Re: I’m A Photographer Now

Thanks. Yeah, it is absurd and I've meanwhile read a number of articles that agree. Nonetheless, it seems Flickr have given in somewhat by only counting one-way contacts. People that are mutually 'befriended' don't count towards the total. Well, teh interweb surfers have had their stir, let's move on and, indeed, occupy ourselves with the quality of Flickr, in service and content.

Re: The Quick And Dirty Guide to My Reading Habits

Well, you do have a point there, Archie. Much has been said about stories and how they all are just variations of the same basic ideas. Um, I don't know really what made me choose these. Maybe I felt these looked the most artsy? The also have rather specific themes: social issues, diversity and photography... And they were all cropped to square, these three, so I might have felt they'd make a nice series. I haven't heard from them yet, but I am rather curious as to what might happen.

Re: The Quick And Dirty Guide to My Reading Habits

I couldn't say how I read exactly, not at the drop of a hat, other than that it's often as wild, erratic and eclectic as my collecting habits are. If you do make that post I'll maybe have a rather more practical answer ready by then.

I'm still trying to figure out if adding all my books to some online list is worth the effort. It's not that I'm actually going to trade or discuss them in much depth on the web. For now, I'm rather drawn towards Goodreads, but I've an account at LibraryThing as well (where there's also only one book in my list). Goodreads is free, btw, unlike LT and there's Shelfari as well, but that seems to be more of an Amazon-ish shopping guide...

Anyway, have fun with the meme. I'm looking forward to that.

Re: Bookmarked A Year Ago

Thank you. Maybe I'll give season three a go.

You can find my bookmarks here (and I listed a couple of more versions of me on the web on my About page).

Re: Calgary to Banff Timelapse

I know. It's a thing I wanted to try out now that I moved to del.icio.us again. I'm a bit worried, though, it might get annoying after a while. That combined with the weekly 'Bookmarked A Year Ago', may become too much... I don't want to turn NDNL in some shoddy link dump place. Then again, most people are in feed readers and can just ignore it and scroll on...

I'm still undecided...

Re: I Am a Networked Individual Limited to Sabotage

I always had you pegged as one of those, Adem ;-)

Re: links for 2007-02-12

Exactly. Not only don't they add much to the content (like you say: they even lower whatever standard there may be here) I also don't really like the look of them and it confuses people.

Maybe if I could get these to work in a sidebar, that would be nice: RSS maybe?

I suppose people who are really interested in what I bookmark, can go to the About page and check out my del.icio.us or my shared feeds on Google Reader there.

But thanks so much for the kind words.

Re: Calgary to Banff Timelapse

Good point there. Actually, I find the idea of a finite universe a lot more logical and 'easy' to grasp. Infinity isn't only mind-boggling, it seems kind of illogical. A border is much easier to understand. What is behind that border? Well, nothing. Something that doesn't exist (like zungmupfs for instance) is much easier to comprehend. But that doesn't make it simple though.

Re: On A Clear Day You Can see 5,000 Light Years Away

Well, Aidan, that's just the nearest star we can see, located near to us in that little belt of stars we call the Milky Way, which is only at the fringe of our own galaxy. Which is only one in the small cluster of galaxies we call the Local Group. Which is only one in the billions of galaxies out there. I get the same feeling, though, when I think of it: odd inside, lol.

As far as evolution goes, I think most people would agree that is pretty much proven, through theory, findings and scientific testing of those two. I remember over a year ago, when you were one of the first to comment on my blog as well. It was a great encouragement back then.

It's also something that I've always appreciated about MindValley: your interaction with your community; something I don't see happening with del.icio.us.

I was really sorry too when I made my move but the Quick Blink problem had become insufferable (relatively speaking, of course). I had intended to write more about this in my post but it ended up on the editing floor.

You see, I felt BlinkList was beginning to be neglected. No more posts on the BL blog (I've unsubscribed by now), little feedback from you guys, and no swift solving of this and perhaps other issues.

I realize you have a company to run in order to help BL survive in the first place and that your labs probably have other matters on their mind, not in the least the 'fight against the big ones'.

To me BL is clearly second in line, though; Magnolia and all the others are nowhere compared to you.

I'm happy to see that the MV blog made it into 9rules. Who would have thought I would beat you at that, eh? But at the same time that was the proverbial last drop. Here you are, member of the best blogging network around, and what happens when they roll out the new site? They choose del.icio.us over you!

Another reason for me to switch: BlinkList integration with other services (9rules, WordPress, Flock etc.) just isn't happening – see my post BlinkList Where Are You of 17 June 2006. And none of my friends are on BL either.

So, before I wax all romantic, let me say I do like BlinkList and there was a time I would have gladly become your Euro Evangelist ;-) For now, as a consumer in this fast-paced world of free online tools, it made sense to switch.

I hope this finds you well and that you will still be able to make BL synonymous with social bookmarking some day. You are doing a great job. And thank you for your comment.

Best

Nils

Re: Harry Potter’s Mother

Thanks, I'll be popping right over.

Re: Bookmarked A Year Ago

NOTE: I have let the above comments pass through the moderation queue because I feel I had no right to stop them, as was my initial reflex.

I read the first with some interest, but stalled on the second. Everyone has the right to comment and react, especially when they or their product are mentioned. But there is something like reason and proportion. I do not think that a two line 'review' warrants a 350 word advertorial and I do not endorse anything that is said in these two comments above.

Think of it as a one-off favor: cheap ad space.

Re: The Quiet American

I found it definitely gripping, Arjun. Yes, when I mingle with the real world it often surprises me how the Flemish are generally a dumb creed. They speak of nothing with no knowledge, is the problem I think. "Wovon man nicht sprechen kann, darüber muß man schweigen", he he.

I don't think it's pure racism that is at play, though, but maybe ignorance, stupidity... who knows? We do have our troubles, with uneducated, aggressive, no-good north Africans who manage to foul up an entire society with their behaviour, but when people who don't even live in town vent their foolish opinions about it, that vexes me. And the fact that they make no distinctions.

Smaran, you would always be welcome here. Smart and ambitious young people we can do with and I'd love to have you around. The problem is you're too clever to join us in this drab and dull cramped little place by the North Sea. Maybe I should come to India.

Re: I Shoot, I Score, I Lose

Thanks Aidan. I have to be honest, and it shames me, that I didn't know Kleist. I'd heard of the literary prize before, but never associated it with anything else. Reading up on him and seeing his association with German Romanticism, Goethe and Schiller, that seems like a great big hole in my knowledge and I must soon find out more.

As for the Belgians, see my response to Smaran's comment, only with the addition that the Walloons aren't even considered the brightest bulbs among Belgians. It's that damn federalism I suppose. Either you keep it unitarian or you separate (perhaps with some confederalism in between) but this solution may have done us more harm than good. I tell you: I can't wait for the day when they issue me my first real European passport and get all that 'country nonsense' over with :-)

Re: I Shoot, I Score, I Lose

Thank you so much Chana. Thank you.

Of course, being Flemish, I'm an outsider to it all. But I cast my raven's eye on their society and their culture and think: when will they stop faltering and move on? I really get the feeling that since the Fortuyn assassination in May 2002 they have indeed been in a rut. Their third cabinet since then has just been instated and already it is stuck in petty bickering and already the good intentions (now we have to move on, folks!) seem to disappear in the mists of indecisiveness and apathy.

Anyway, thank you for your story about your own experiences. From what I know about that era (the political murders, the scandals) I feel those were really formative for society and people of that generation and that much of those feelings are still very alive. Good for you to keep hoping and to fight being numbered among 'those people'.

Cheers Mike!

Re: Tintin Will Die In Hollywood

It's funny that you should mention Hergé's technique, because (in the later albums) it was actually very cinematic. Especially his 'Swiss album', L'Affaire Tournesol / The Calculus Affair is fantastic, and just ticks away like a Swiss watch, so to speak. Perfect timing, brilliant narrative and fabulous artwork. And yet, paradoxically, it won't stick on film.

I'm a big 'fan' as well, but you might have guessed that already of course ;-) Actually, I'll tell you a secret: I was twelve when he died and it just shattered me. Yeah, sorry, I couldn't come back to this sooner. But you're right: he does still appeal and maybe this one will the first success in its kind. Spielberg is no idiot. So we'll have to wait and see indeed.
Btw, don't know if you recall The Cigars of the Pharaoh? I think it's the only album in which Tintin is confronted with a film set (with Rastapopoulos as the director) and he makes a mess of it there. Maybe that was a prediction of his later encounters with the movies?

Re: This May Be What Is Wrong With Me

Thanks Josh. I don't call this uninformed at all, but well thought-out. Of course, no one is forcing you to Twitter, and even when you do, there's no need for five-minute updates.

The way I see it, it's not about who ate what. I've heard many descriptions, but 'disposable micro-blogging' comes close. I use it as a notepad, writing down an observation or a frustration so that I get it out. If a theme emerges, maybe a post will come out of it.

The other way around, I do like how Twitter 'fills the gaps'. Some bloggers don't update every day, but now I get an idea of who they are. Whether they're catching a plane or going for a mountain-walk, it allows me an added glimpse of how their ideas take shape.

As for confusing real people with online 'identities', true: there is a danger in that. But I think most of us live well-balanced lives, which should make our tweets and posts all the more interesting.

And now I'd love to see you show up there some time nonetheless ;-)

Re: Behold! The other way round, your 'tweets' may tell me what's been occupying you, and then, I may see that evolve into a post.

Re: Behold! There has been some confusion about this, though. All I can say is that, even while being aware one isn't watching the Greene version, this film struck a chord with me. As I wrote, knowing the story behind this film and how it came about precisely makes for an interesting contemporary viewing nonetheless. Apocalypse Now has very little in common with Heart of Darkness and yet it is a good film, flawed as it may be to some, now and in years to come. But rest assured, the book is on the list. And thank you for commenting.

Re: Trying to Score a Mac for the Weekend

Thanks Aidan. Is there a lot of talk about the EU in Switzerland perhaps?

As for the mission of the EU, yes, we have been running in circles a bit, now focusing on social issues, then on monetary ones, and never really advancing except for adding new members. That is very acutely felt by everybody.

I do think the Euro was a good thing, though. Connect the economies, connect the currency and it's going to be very hard for a member state to fall out of step and come up with crazy ideas. But again, the way it was implemented could have been better. Some states really got bad exchange rate deals with that. And that creates grumbles with the public.

Thanks mate for commenting!

Re: Notebooks That Make You Look Cool

Great. Like I said, I'm far away from this all in every way. It's crucial that she and the bloggers close to her take care of themselves first, make sure every stone is upturned to hit these creeps hard and make sure it is known how this is unacceptable. Meanwhile, I couldn't just look at it from the sideline and not say anything.

Re: Notebooks That Make You Look Cool

Yes! As if because I don't know Kathy or the Scobles personally, I shouldn't pay attention to this. As if because you'll always have psychos like this, we should just ignore them.

I think everyone should blog this because first of all everyone needs to know. Then we could discuss who, what, where and why.

Re: When You’re 64: Murder, Mayhem and Exploitation

It definitely is. I've heard tax systems proposed that would allow for a modular allocation of the due amount to certain items. Not unlike the way one is able to choose classes to earn credits, only the other way around.

This would be a very direct form of taxation and it would show what the public thinks is 'bad spending'. The disadvantage, of course, would be that 'the masses' would determine what is 'unnecessary', like art, education, the environment.

But judging what I know of the US, those departments don't get much in funding anyway. :-(

Re: Blogging Sucks Right Now

Good point there too, Edrei. Obviously, this one event, and the whole issue for that matter, does have many sides. For the people involved it will be clear-cut, though, and I figured: before debating, we might as well just stand together and express our disagreement (to put it mildly).

I am happy to see, however, that the massive response has attracted the attention of the BBC. So the massive amount of comments and posts (the 'story' shot to number one on Technorati yesterday, and it's still there) made sure of that. The amount of comments and trackbacks to Kathy's post was phenomenal.

Move on, yes, but raise our voices now. That was the point of this post if anything else.

Which means I still agree with you too, of course ;-)

Re: Alle Menschen werden Brüder

Lol, and Rule Britannia I assume?

;-)

Re: Blogging Sucks Right Now

Yes, I think the four owners of the blogs that published this are known. Not that I doubted any capacity for such feelings on your behalf, but because I seldom read such frank and heartfelt concerns being expressed these days. I don't know if I could muster this much honesty myself, although at times I am no less afflicted by them.

But never feel guilty over the talents you have and the perks they bring. Living in the lucky part of the world is not your fault. Not knowing what to do with that gift or abusing it would be the wrong.

I seldom comment on your blog and especially refrained from it during the past few weeks. But you're a good, clever and sensitive man Scoble. Any family would be happy to have just half the dad, husband, etc. that this must make you.

I guess it's late at night where you are; the dark and vulnerable hours. But take your time and find out how all this affects you and what you want to make out of it. I'm certain you will do the right thing.

Take care. Best wishes from across the globe.

Re: BloggerCon in bed is awesome

You should've titled with 'BloggerCon is awesome in bed' for some added pun. But I really don't like all those italics and CAPITALS and what have you. It made me dizzy to tell you the truth.
Honestly, have you looked at it? It's how Thomas Friedman would write if he was trying to transcribe his intonation while he talks. Please don't go this way yourself, Robert. You write concisely and clearly as is and you don't need this.

Re: I love reading feeds

1) Mm, just a wee bit too much perhaps?
2) No, I haven't subscribed (yet).
3) I'm not sharing anything (yet) on
http://www.google.com/reader/shared/02353062926...

I'm reading 292 feeds already, constantly deciding whether to share or not AND subscribing to all the feed (b)logs of my friends... that would become just plain nuts I fear.

Re: How do we keep up?

Nice comments all, about how we shouldn't try to keep up with everything, but I'm essentially the same. I'm listening to music, the TV is on and I'm reading feeds, feeds, feeds. In a little while I will try to watch a DVD and when I go to bed, I will be reading books.

So, what did I do to keep up? I shared this post on Google Reader and added it to del.icio.us so I can come back to it (yes that too).

And I subscribed to your shared items. I'm interested to see what that will bring.
