pwinn I agree that they're ultimately responsible, but such an outpouring of bile? Consider what you would do if you started an affiliate program to sell something with your name on it, and affiliates started using pop-up ads. After taking responsibility, how would you stop it? Cancel the entire affiliate program, or just the ones engaging in the practice?

Now find one of those ads, and from there, identify the affiliate in question. All it should take is an affiliate ID of some kind. Go ahead, I'll wait.

Maybe you're smarter than I am and spotted it in seconds, but what I got a loooooooon tribalfusion URL without any easily-identifiable affiliate ID. It also appears that things are set so you don't get the ad more than once a day, as I can't get it to pop back up now to dig more closely.

Now let's say you manage to stomp one out. When you offer $9/signup, my guess is you'll be dealing with a *lot* of people trying that shady pop-up nonsense. How many staff members are you going to dedicate to surfing randomly until they hit pop-up ads?

More realistically, you'd probably wait until someone reported a pop-up, then cancel the appropriate affiliate account (assuming you got enough information to figure out which affiliate it was). Which is exactly what Netflix is doing.

In other words, I'm suggesting that the widespread use of popup Netflix ads may be due to the high payoff ($9!) rather than any tacit endorsement by Netflix.

It's also possible that they make those ad-sized images available inside their affiliate program somehow, and are actually the scheming duplicitous ogres you seem to be assuming. I tend to go with never attributing to malice that which can be so easily explained by stupidity. :-)

I'd heard about it a good year or so before I used it. By then, I had a half-dozen friends (mostly the techie coworkers at Mindshare/Virilion) on the service.

That seems very limiting.

Maybe a method like @say_hello@ needs a valid object, but ones like @to_s@, @new_record?@ and @destroy@ certainly don't.

Furthermore, @say_hello@ might require that the @name@ attribute be valid, but it probably doesn't require a valid @birthdate@, even if that were part of the class's validation.

Why not just accept the convention that, by default, invalid objects can do everything except @save@ and then call @valid?@ as needed?

And that's on top of any ad revenue.

I love ABP, but it only works if there is a pattern to the ad filenames. If FB is smart, and cares about the tiny number of people who use FF and ABP, they'll put all their advertising images in http://static.ak.facebook.com/images/ and use random filenames.

They have opened it up (albeit not completely so); I remember using the Google API for personal projects, years ago. But the Facebook stuff is only accessible within the context of Facebook.

If (a big "if") the VW rumors and follow-up are substantiated, this is definitely newsworthy: Facebook deleting someone's account for publicly criticizing them.

If they delete your profile for talking about the VW vs. Facebook spat, that is flat-out ridiculous.

I am actually glad -- because he needs to look for a job instead of flirting with chicks.

I agree on the RSS; disagree on the Newer/Older.

Think of it as paging through results. The usual UI is to have the "next" page of results (in this case, older tweets) be on the right side.

In Twitter's case, I think that is more relevant than the metaphor of a left-to-right chronology.

But yeah -- that trips me up on Twitter, del.icio.us and other sites where paging *forward* through results means going *back* in time.
