In general, the education CMS area is pretty horrible when it comes to usability of the user interface, so that's definitely an opportunity to differentiate. It might not really matter, though; the industry sometimes seems to be based on selling to customers who can't tell the difference.

Re: Ooma raises $14M more amid tough round

"However, the challenge is that Ooma generally makes a one-time sale of its device, and so has trouble making recurring revenue."

You have a lot of information about Ooma funding but it doesn't sound like you know much about the product. Ooma has a new hub ("VoIP box") that is launching for the holiday sales season along with new cordless handsets that extend the use of the hub. Panasonic makes money selling cordless phone base units and expansion handsets so why can't Ooma? Ooma will offer a cordless phone and VoIP all-in-one product as a more appealing option to a regular cordless phone.

They have also expanded their sales to numerous retailers such as Amazon.com, BestBuy, Target, WalMart, Staples, Radio Shack, Costco and so on. Ooma doesn't charge for base services which is appealing to cost conscious people looking to cut landline costs over time. They currently have a premier product many Ooma users buy with a monthly fee. These services include a second line and with the new hub will tie into a GoogleVoice account among other services. Ooma plans to branch out to home automation and security/video products that tie into the Ooma hub. There are many current and potential revenue streams in additional to the initial hub purchase.

"It also requires people to pay for yet another telecommunications service, when they already have a broadband connection and a fixed line."

Ooma can be a landline ("fixed line") replacement similar to Vonage or VoIP services but more affordable. The key to sales is the savings through free US phone calls without any landline monthly bills. All that you need is broadband which is also required for Skype or any VoIP to be a landline replacement.

"With free services like Skype becoming more popular, the competitive landscape is likely to remain extremely tough for Oooma."

Skype requires a computer to run, a smartphone or the purchase of a Skype phone ($100). You can't easily use a home phone with cordless extension handsets with Skype making it hard to be a home landline replacement. Plus Skype charges $3/month to make unlimited calls to a US landline so its not free. While Skype is a competitor the call quality is not as good as Vonage or Ooma and it has many drawbacks for a consumer looking for a plug and play VoIP landline replacement solution.

To think Ooma can't make money has me guessing you were looking at their business from 2007 instead of their business in 2009. While I agree the competitive landscape is tough you must recognize the value add of Ooma over the competitors & the other revenue generating opportunities for Ooma.

http://blog.tmcnet.com/blog/rich-tehrani/voip/o...
http://blog.tmcnet.com/blog/rich-tehrani/ip-com...

On another note, what happened with TD Funds investment in Ooma during this dilution? The FCC investing in this Telcom product is a great sign for Ooma.

Re: Creepy: Bart Simpson robo-calling for Scientology

its already been copyrighted by fox.. hmmmm

Re: 4chan /b/ goes after cat abusers, wins

We just did it for the lulz. Align everything together so the laser and siting reticle point in the same direction.

If you need to get the attention of an oncoming ship or boat that's not responsive to radio, take your laser gear outside and illuminate the other guy's bridge until he gets the message that there's something in front of him.

Picking laser power is up to you. 5mW is safe under all circumstances; 50mW will get the immediate attention of anyone with functioning eyes and 500mW properly placed will put enough power through the eyelids to wake up a sleeping watch stander.

Note: don't try this against warships or aircraft.

Re: Manned Models - An Unusual Training Device | gCaptain.com

Question from a spectator for the pros:

What went wrong at about 1:15 in the video where the ship left the channel and ran over the buoy at about 1:50? E.g. I don't make a choice amongst breakfast cereals, I make a choice amongst toasted muselis, and amazingly enough the muselis are in the same place on the shelves.

The first time I read about the experiment with the jams, I met a friend that evening outside Starbucks (I don't drink coffee so I don't often go to Starbucks but it was a meeting place both of us knew). While waiting for her, I counted the coffee options on offer and came up with about 35 not counting the additional options of having whatever you had with soy milk or an extra shot of espresso or whatever. Either we have to believe that:
a) the normal interpretation of the jam experiment is right and Starbucks is sacrificing profits in order to fulfill a higher motive of supplying the world with a lot of coffee choices
b) the normal interpretation of the jam experiment doesn't tell the whole of the story.

If you look at the Starbucks menu, those 35 odd choices are broken down into about 6 major level decisions (espresso, cappucino, etc) with 6 sub-options within each. People are not choosing from 35 different options, they are making two choices from two different sets of six options.

I would be interested in the results of a jam experiment where they tried presenting a large number of jam options but broken down into groups like Starbucks does.

Re: A Homeboy's Life - they said it. you run right back to the start.

fobr you are retards, lmyv

Re: Will Podcast for Food: the Dennyscast

Hell yeah!

Re: Eric Striffler's Blog!

That's the stupidest thing Ive ever heard, and it's a logical fallacy as the point here is that burning kittens alive is cruel and immoral, regardless of whatever Columbus may or may not ever have done.

Re: Election 2008 Prayer Event at New Hope Church

Once again, Gavin's ignorance of theology and religous bias shows through. A highway over 10 blocks? What's the point? Where is the old bridge that's being replaced? But then the county doesn't pay taxes on the metro, on the free zoo, or just about any of the free things within the city (All of which are accessible via the metrolink). Certain counties also voted against expanding it to their location before the highway 40 construction, but as soon as the highway was closed, they complained about not having metro service! Public transportation is very cost effective.

Re: North/South MetroLink Extensions - StimulusWatch.org

On a typical work day between 7 and 9 am, the metrolink is jam packed going eastward in to downtown. Sure it's rather empty in the middle of the day or really late at night when there's no games playing, but then so are the roads. Cardinal games though are a real pain for most regular metro riders though. The trains are so packed with fans in red that it's just crazy.

Re: North/South MetroLink Extensions - StimulusWatch.org

The transit system itself is very safe. What happens outside of the stations or around workplaces is a different story. Your place of work should be able to provide security for it's employees, and if the neighborhood is so rough that they can't possibly do that, something seriously needs to be done about crime in that area, though it's not metro's fault. That local community needs to step up, their police force needs to step up, and only then can things change for the better.

Re: North/South MetroLink Extensions - StimulusWatch.org

You cannot get much more fuel efficient buses than what exists already without major spending. Many of the existing buses already do run on alternative fuels, though not many, and their cost is most likely higher than traditional diesel fueled vehicles. With the recent cutbacks, many of the under used lines have been eliminated, and existing lines have longer wait times. While I'd love to see an investment in renewable energy buses, it would cost about the same to expand the metrolink light rail system instead.

Re: Environmental Management System - StimulusWatch.org

$1.5 million for what? What we need are quick and efficient street cars to supplement major bus routes. For example, a street car along Grand Ave would be a great feeder to the metrolink and provide residents from both north and south to travel a lot easier. A single street car could fit at least three busloads of people at a time and running every 30 minutes (Like the currently cut buses) would be great.

Re: Regional Transit Data Infrastructure Upgrade - StimulusWatch.org

What is this?

Re: Center for Emerging Technologies Expansion - StimulusWatch.org

"St. Louis already receives more than $500M per year in NIH funding - primarily through Wash U and SLU"
...
"already receives more than $500M per year in NIH funding"
...
"receives more than $500M per year"
...
"more than $500M"
...
"$500M"

Re: Transit System Operating Deficit - StimulusWatch.org

ccham, Just because you do not ride doesn't mean that the people who completely fill the metrolink every morning can walk to work.

Re: Look At Lunar: Harmony of the Silver Star

I JUST CAME IN MY PANTS

Re: Opinionated - Mr. Duran said he and his wife earn about $400,000...

no, you're just a Stalin youth member!

Re: Senator Kerry = Owned

So Kerry is a douche. Not in gameplay or fun, but regarding the story and it's atmosphere. Over all in the levels of Half-Life 1 there was this singularity of atmosphere and story given. The game always told and showed you why you had to escape and you could always say "This is why I fight". It never set you in the position to question it which indeed happens in Half-Life 2 when you start a genocide on Combines just in order to rescue Eli Vance.

Re: Lo Esencial Es Invisible A Los Ojos

comment

Re: Best Wallpaper Ever?

NOT WHILE WERE AROUND!!!

Re: 10 Dirty Little Web Development Tricks › Yongfook | Web Producer and Consultant based in Tokyo

Thank you for number 7. Writing as a friend, a person who cares for others, regardless of their background or heritage,an opinionated lady , who respects the opinions of others,a person not without faults, and a US citizen.I think you know all of the above is true. When I have strong feelings about something, I state them. Not here to debate you, just to simply state my feelings on your seemingly insensitive comments. I would not and never have said such an uncaring remark about anyone's loss of life, anywhere...especially innocent lives. The way a person, a family, or country grieves is their business. Thousands have died in several countries around the world, many in horrible ways.I know that, and I mourn for them. How many or how often any of these deaths are publicized is not in the ordinary citizen's control. There is an off button on every TV,or radio, and you can choose what you read. This is not only a matter of thousands dying, but also the first time US soil has been attacked since Pearl Harbor. This is a time of mourning, a time of learning, a time in our history. The US just happens to be a "super power", news worthy in the eye of the media and the world. That's just the way it is.It doesn't mean that all lives lost or problems anywhere else matter less, to caring individuals. The US gov't. and it's media are not perfect, as is no person. However, it is our shores that are inundated with immigrants seeking refuge, money, more freedoms, opportunities, and a better lifestyle for their children. Again, not a perfect place, but there is no Utopia. You could say that the US has commited unjust acts toward other countries through the years. I would have to agree, and be ashamed, not because I had a part in that, but because I am an American and as any loyal citizen of any land, I would not like my "name" to be associated with any wrong doing, but I that is not the issue here and now. We could go on for days about pros and cons of US gov't' policy and actions.Maybe I'm misunderstanding your meaning, or I don't appreciate the "joke", but your words seem plain to me. "I can't be bothered about their 9/11 thing"...."it's been a year".I was in Ghana last year when this happened. I saw and heard first hand all the sympathy, the concern and yes, the fear the people there expressed. Fear to think that if this could happen in the US, what else was possible anywhere in the world. They mourned the dead along with me, not only my friends there, but strangers in shops and on the streets, if they learned I was from the US. Even one of my friends from Ghana had visited the WTC in the past. The day of that visit could have been Sept. 11, 2001. Two men with families who attended my church died there, simply because they went to work on that morning.I am 60 miles North of NYC, 64 people from my surrounding area died there. I didn't know them, but I do mourn their deaths. You have never been to the WTC. Maybe you don't know that it was a great tourist area. Maybe you don't know that NYC is called the "melting pot" because the people there are not only citizens of the US, many are immigrants, from the world over, both legal and illegal living, working, making their way one day at a time in the US."It's been a year"....Statistics show that about a year after such a huge loss of life to a tragedy such as this is when "Post Traumatic Syndrome" and "Survivor Guilt" begins for those closely associated. Please just show a little compassion or be silent....Last but not least, maybe you won't bother about this either, another part of the 9/11 thing...a man named Emmanuel Akwasi Afuakwah..deceased.May he rest in peace.May all the innocent souls taken in every land rest in peace, especially those who have no one to mourn them or be bothered about their loss of life on this earth.Take care, FAF...your friend...Eme.

Re: Movie Nights

Hi FAF, You usually like my movie referrals..."Barbershop".....very funny...know you'll like it. Navigating U.S. State Educator Certification Criteria

I'd probably have ended up a teacher if not for the lack of any sort of real information online about the certification process in Texas. The site sounds awesome, but the Texas page just has the same incomplete information you find everywhere: you have to complete a program and take some tests.

What are the actual legal requirements for obtaining certification? What is the actual step-by-step process? How long does it take depending on what kind of degree you have? How much does it cost, and how is that broken down? Will my future employer pay for it? Does it matter what program you participate in? At what point in the process can I be hired? What's the difference between TExES and ExCET? Do I have to take both? Is taking the THEA the only way to meet the basic skills requirement or can high scores on other tests count? Do past THEA scores count?

"Information about alternative certification in Texas is coming soon!" Anyone with an education degree already has the answers to anything the page would answer, right? So the only people who will ever need the page are the people who want information on alt. cert., which is the one thing you just don't have.

I don't think the difficulty of getting any useful information is keeping out potential teachers who are really interested, but it did make me realize that education is more of a mess than I thought.

Re: Should All Great Blogs Have A Comments Policy?

1. I do not have a Blog Comments Policy.
2. Why not? Because I delete comments I don't want shown.
3. I don't even think about a blog's possible policy before posting a comment. I'm pretty sure that you couldn't hold me to a policy without requiring me to say that I've read it before submitting my comment.
4. A comment policy says to me that the site's goals come before my comment. It says that the site has had problems with comments before. A comment policy doesn't really make sense to me: people who are going to post spam/useless comments will do it anyway, but you'll scare away legitimate dissenting commenters.

I'm really not sure what problem you're trying to solve...it comes across more as "31 days to a better blog" means that you have to add a bunch of cruft to your blog. Is this really just about quoting your commenters? If you want to reply to a comment, do it in the comments on that same post. If you like the topic, then write a new post about it. Wholesale quotes from comments really isn't something anyone does, so it ends up looking kind of amateur, no matter how you do it...as though your audience is just a handful of people you know in real life.

Re: Flashback Friday

> I would like for things to be a bit better aligned

To what end? Cleartrip hasn't "laid-off" 42 employees - they've quit. Of course, the management can't say that, or else they'll lose PR brownie points. "Laid off" sounds much better.

Cleartrip has become a victim of their own management, who have consistently contributed towards the loss of quality of their what-could-have-been excellent product, while they got mired in establishing their voice in various management meetings for personal gains.

It's a case of a company going downhill, not a company losing flab to get tighter.
