J- Whose first amendment rights were protesters opposing? The first amendment does not guarantee the right to assault. What you seem to be missing here is that no one involved in the DNC or RNC protests was opposed to the voicing of alternate view points in protest. Protesters do not try to shut down other protesters- and it is the fact that so many concerns can be brought up from both "conservative" and "liberal" perspectives that illustrates the need for public discourse. The only force bringing a halt to that discourse is violence and antagonism. No harm ever came from listening. We've listened to politicians long enough in this election, and now it is time for political forces to open their ears.
