That hour between darkness and light. This is when my mind and heart are completely open. When my feet feel closest to the ground.

This is the time when I write, paint and even forgive.

Re: What is the wish behind your biggest complaint?

My biggest complaint of late seems to be fatigue. I find that I am not as energetic as I once was. It seems as if I am carrying another person on my shoulders constantly. I drag myself to work and back, homework time with my son and even those intimate moments with my husband. There are things I want to do but just can't get going.

Secretly, I crave sleep. Delicious sleep. Uninterrupted sleep. Did I say I need sleep! I believe this is the secret behind my complaint. I dream of two weeks on an island in Greece or Fiji. I want to sleep on a huge bed under a canopy of stars. For now, I would settle for a long weekend away from home. I realize I need to recharge my batteries and I have to do it soon.

Re: What’s your favourite form of exercise?

Walking is my favorite form of exercise because it forces me to observe the things around me and gets me out of the cocoon I sometimes create for myself. I especially love early morning walks when everything seems new.

Re: What’s your favourite form of exercise?

I cannot believe how much energy one gets out of the Hot Yoga sessions. Our 6 year old shares one side of the second floor with us and it can be quite a challenge to get our groove on. What helps is having a mother who is willing to take her grandson for weeks at a time when he is out of school. That's when my husband and I let it all hang out; sexy underwear, Marvin and all. Hey...I just realized our son is out of school in three weeks. Yipeeeee!!!

Re: What are the things you love that you don’t do enough of?

If I had more time I would crochet more. Because my family began migrating to the US in 1937 from Brazil there is lots of wonderful history in these photos. I love the photo of my grandmother in front of Macy's on 34th Street in 1940. I am especially proud of the ones I've restored and framed.

Re: What’s the best money advice you’ve received?

I've always had a strange relationship with money. I can keep $20 in my wallet and forget it's even there. I use a bank card for most of my purchases. If I can't pay for something fully I leave it. While this has kept me out of debt it has robbed me of my ability to have fun with the money I make. It would be nice to be impulsive once in a while. I don't want to feel guilty when I buy myself a coveted pair of shoes.

Re: How do you define waste?

Complaints and whining make the top of my list.

Re: What has been your most significant beginning?

I was immediately impressed by my husband's warm smile but when he parted his lips to speak I felt as if I had known him all my life. We could walk and talk for hours.

Those early days upon our first meeting really set the tone for the rest of our relationship. I love the interpretation by Emmanuelle Kant. I'm going to use this.

I have always envied those who have financial security and complete self confidence. I know that if I had no financial worries I could do with my time. I could wake up in the morning and choose what creative thing I would get my hands into. I saw a little bird on my way to work this morning and thought about you. The little thing was trying to pick up a bug but couldn't do it at first. I watched him struggle but you know what? He made it. I wonder if he took it back to his family waiting on some tree or he found a quiet branch and feasted all by himself. It tells the story of Amir, a well-to-do boy from Kabul, who is tormented by the guilt of abandoning his friend Hassan, the son of his father's servant. The story is set against a backdrop of tumultuous events, from the fall of the monarchy in Afghanistan through the Soviet invasion, the mass exodus of refugees to Pakistan and the United States, and the Taliban regime. It's a must see.

Re: Special Friday Edition - What’s your word of the week?

ORGANIZE!
This week I've concentrated on gathering my resources, taking stock of my talents and strengths and organizing them. He pulls me into his world everyday and allows me to experience it with a fresh twist. Like planting sunflowers because he thinks we'll have a pot full of little suns on our deck, or the first time he saw a rainbow. I had seen them a thousand times but seeing him admire one made me appreciate them even more. Most of all that time when I was really down; feeling overworked and under appreciated at my job. He noticed I was sad and suggested we tie towels around our necks and act like superheros. I didn't feel like doing it but I did. Then he told me, "you see mommy...anyone can be a superhero.

Re: What’s your favourite inspirational quote?

I love quotes so here are a few of my favorites:

When you have only two pennies left in the world, buy a loaf of bread with one, and a lily with the other. ~Chinese Proverb

To live is so startling it leaves little time for anything else.
~Emily Dickinson

Where there is love there is life.~Gandhi

Re: What are your favourite natural remedies?

One of my favorite natural remedies is sleep. My mother was very young when she married my father. My father was 15 years her senior, a widower with two little boys. Together my parents created a wonderful family. I have never used the word "step" or "half" to describe my brothers. My father always called my mother "amada" (beloved) and my mother always held my father's pinky finger as they walked. They gave me a good foundation for my own marriage and yes, I too hold my husband's pinky.

Re: What’s a great wedding gift to give?

When my brother got married, all the ladies in our family gathered our treasured family recipes and placed in a handmade book made by another family member. I would really, REALLY believe I am beautiful, intelligent and creative.

I would have choosen to continue my studies in art instead of business to become a curator. I would teach art history at a great learning institution. I would then retire to my studio after work where I would paint, print, write, and throw clay. I am in the middle of a complete redesign of my studio space. The first thing I did was to paint one wall in an empowering color. I chose a golden yellow because according to Chinese culture it is the center of everything. Yellow also represents freedom from worldly cares. It was also important for me to choose yellow because it aids in clarity for decision making, sharper memory and concentration. It also protects one from lethargy and depression during the dark winter months.

These are all elements I need in my studio since my space has only one window and I am not a friend of cold dark winters. Two items I dream of owning for my space is the Eames lounge chair in brown leather with ottoman of course and the Lux table lamp designed by Alberto Meda and Paolo Rizzatto for Luceplan.

Re: What’s the best relationship advice you’ve ever given or received?

I've been happily married for 10 years. While I've rid myself of physical clutter, I still struggle with my mind running in different directions. At work, I'm learning to delegate more. I have cleared my closet of everything I've not worn in years. I found belts in there from 1990! I gave these items away to charity. My closet is bare but the items I have are classic and of great quality. I even found my vintage Gucci bag which I am now sporting. I've had young women stop and ask me where I got my bag since they've not seen that style. I just smile. They don't know I purchased this bag with the earnings from my very first job. Probably before they were even born.

I am also using a little trick I saw in a magazine. I believe it was Real Simple. I turn the hook of my hanger in the opposite way of all the others once I've worn that item. This way I know what's working for me or not. I've had it with waste and clutter. It's not good for the spirit.

Re: What’s your favorite eco-friendly habit?

Our family is working hard to establish good eco-friendly habits.
One of our biggest is plastic bags. We don't use them. We use eco-friendly bags to do our shopping. The plastic bags we had left or that people bring into our home get cut up and turned into strips so we can crochet them into an eco-friendly shopping bag. If you crochet and would like to do the same, here is a little instruction/information video I found on the net that helped me get started: http://blog.craftzine.com/archive/2008/01/plast...

Re: What promise did you keep that changed your life?

I promised myself that I would leave an abusive relationship.
