All very perceptive comments, but wasn't this all true a year ago when imeem started streaming all the major label tunes for free?
And wasn't it true in January of this year when last.fm followed imeem
The transformation started a long time ago, myspace is merely following the inevitable (and following it with a poor implementation by the sound of things)

in Why is iMeem Killing Rhapsody, Napster, & eMusic in Traffic? on Wise Startup Blog
imeem is basicly giving users what they want, they're youtube for music.
also little known is that many of imeem's engineers came from the original napster, it looks like roxio would have been better buying more than just the Napster name.

Anne,
Good point. It's really amazing to see that innovation trumps all.
Even with these huge marketing budgets, consumers won't budge, but as
soon as you give consumers something new, innovative and that they
actually want ..and they flock to it.
My question is, why didn't Rhapsody spend that $50 million on
acquiring iMeem instead of on a marketing budget? Or perhaps pick up
any of these other startups starting to generate a ton of interest
from consumers?

"I really hope it is the first of these."
You do? If that's the case then it'll make it easier for myspace to kill off the competition, they've already been blocking imeem for the last year so it's clear they don't want to share the space with anyone.
It's an interesting quandry though, there's a lot of anti-myspace feeling on the web and if they were to kill all the competition then I wouldn't be happy, but on the other I still think of the record labels as something of an evil cabal so I don't want to see them squeezing the life from the internet.
I think right now though I'd be happier with a level playing field.
