It's especially troubling that the biggest benefit of GSM technology is the ability to use your SIM chip in any unlocked handset. Signing up with an iPhone-only multi-year contract pretty much negates that...

Great post! Even if Opera Mini DIDN'T squeeze the bloat out of full-sized web pages -- I'm on a stingy 12MB/month data plan in Canada and have yet to go over my allotted bandwidth -- I would STILL use it for its other killer feature: the ability to synchronize my mobile bookmarks to my desktop computer.

With regards to sending an SMS using S60, there's a much easier way to do it which I discovered by accident:

Instead of finding the contact FIRST just type their name (even a partial name) into the address field; when you hit 'send' your Nokia will search its address book for the matching number, which you can then confirm.

It's still multiple steps, but not so many at least...

The N93/N93i reminds me of the old swivel-barrel CoolPix series from Nikon -- both are great for self-portraits, and I can't imagine in this day of Facebook and MySpace that a slimmer version wouldn't do well...

I think you're missing out on possibly the best part of being a Linux user... Distro surfing!

You can easily load a live CD onto a USB stick and try out any number of distros before you find one you like. Here's my current choice:

Great list! Two things, though:

I'd disagree with #1 -- just because there's empty space on a screen doesn't mean it HAS to be filled.

And with regards to #3, isn't that because HTC ultimately manufactures every single WinMo handset themselves?

I received the two I ordered last week, and used it with my Nokia E61i for the first time last night. I suspect that it fried my battery, as it's now almost completely drained and won't take a charge from the wall adapter that came with it!

Needless to say, buyer beware. I'm pretty pissed at this...

I recently pitted my E61i against an N95 8GB on loan from Nokia. I'll be keeping my E61i, mostly because of the QWERTY -- despite the N95's numberpad having a better feel, 39 keys beats 12 any day of the week!

There's actually an option in Tools > Settings > Phone > General to turn predictive text on, but it doesn't seem to do anything...?

I'd also be interested in some further details of how this handset's PIM functionality comes up short. I find it perfectly suitable for my needs, but I don't use Outlook on the desktop side.

And thanks for giving some attention to this often overlooked handset!

IMHO it's going to be an uphill battle for Share on Ovi, given the ubiquity of Flickr and YouTube.

One way Share on Ovi could beat the latter is to respect the video resolution of non-VGA handsets. For example, if I upload a vid to YouTube from my E61i it will get up-res'ed to VGA and look awful. If Ovi could keep it at 320x240 pixels I'd definitely be using it a lot more!

I think Nokia plays great with Mac! I've been a Mac user for at least 15 years and have synced my PIM data to Treos, BlackBerries and Windows Mobiles, and Nokia's iSync plug-ins work exactly as advertised.

With the possible exception of video conversion I've had no issues at all with a Nokia/Mac setup...
