Those are such great ideas! (I put everything possible into the dishwasher, of course.) And I love to clean with vinegar - I wipe down all the bathroom walls with it.

As for canning ... it scares me some, too, but so far so good with the sauces and jellies! My mom says it's simple: Smell it. Does it smell bad? Rancid? Don't eat it!

If you gave your three children instructions at the same time, then one or more of them weren't paying attention. But if you gave one the instructions, then gave the other two the instructions, they might have heard it differently. If you gave one the instructions, and asked him to repeat them to the other two (which is essentially what the Bible does), would he always repeat exactly what you said? Would the other two always understand exactly what he said or what you meant? Even if the Bible is infallible, your argument isn't. You really should come up with a better one.

Hi Kyle, I stumbled across your blog a few days ago (don't quite remember how)and it's great! I'm moving to Chile in January, so it's been really helpful to read. I actually do have a question. I'm trying to make a budget and was wondering how much you all spend on food in one month. The first time I was in Chile I lived with a host family who fed me, and the second time I went a little overboard on the eating out so I don't think what I spent was very accurate. I also imagine that prices have gone up somewhat since I was last there (January '08) So basically, what's your grocery bill like? Thanks!!

My favorite drunk gringa story is one that my friend's host mom told me. One night she woke up to hear a micro horn oustide her house. She was confused, because the micros don't run on her street. So she went out to find her gringa exchange student DRIVING THE MICRO!

I laughed so hard when I read about the Minnie Mouse suggestions! This rings so true for some Chilenas I know who are obsessed with Winnie the Pooh and Disney characters. I'm not sure if they are that way in the bedroom or not, but I totally would not be surprised.

From what I've learned talking to F., I think that what you write is true. He has said that the Chilenas he has known have not been as "free" with their sexuality as certain gringas he has also known.

Totally agree. I think that here in Chile I am very observant because it's a different culture and I see things that Chileans don't see because they're so accustomed to it being a part of every day life and existence. Having such a critical eye has not only helped me to analyze US culture, but also to point things out to Chileans that they had never even thought about before but was staring them right in the face.

Your experience sounds exactly like mine when they filmed me at Ben and Jerry's. We were all sitting around eating ice cream and chatting while they were filming us and then they would say, "Hey, actually could you say that again and then lick your spoon?" And then we each had little interviews and we would say something, and the girl would say "okay, could you say that again but using these words?" It sounds like you had a great time!

I think that here in Chile flaite has (at least) two definitions. One, as you said, denotes a way of acting that is socially inappropriate, like being a huge jerk. This is the only way I ever use flaite here. Unfortunately, Chileans use it also to denote social status, especially when it is used in a more negative manner, like "flaite de mierda" or "flaite culiado". Now that I think about it though, the "socially unacceptable" behavior is classist in itself, because I feel like it's "socially unacceptable" BECAUSE it's associated with the lower classes, like getting on the micro from the back door. But really, being a jerk transcends class boundaries, so who knows.

For some reason, I have more experience with the word flaite than with cuico (or is it quico, Heather?) What does that say about me? Hmmm...

That game was great. I've never been that into soccer, but since coming here it has definitely won me over.

And from what I've heard, Bielsa has done amazing things. Yesterday my friends were all like "Look a that weon run! They didn't run like that before Bielsa came..."

I worry about this too. Since I was 18 I've been bopping around from place to place. Now that I want to settle down for a bit here in Sgo, I worry that I won't like the sedentary lifestyle. Although I think it'll be a little while before Sgo is plain vanilla for me.

I think your trip around the world is just what you need, though. It will give you a chance to get away from the plain vanilla and hopefully find a place where you and S. want to live. I think there are ways to challenge yourself without having to change countries every couple of years (at least I hope to god there is!!).

Oh don't worry, they didn't used to be on the bus, they still are! You can buy anything from parche-curitias to toe nail clippers to ball point pens to mani tostado to helados. I almost bought some scissors the other day for only $500 pesos, but realized I had nothing smaller than a $5000 bill. Pucha.

You bring up some very interesting points. I am a senior public relations student and I am constantly learning about the new forms of news releases and social media. We are focusing on blogs and podcasts in order to prepare us for the new age of the news release. I think it is still very important to blend both the traditional release with the new. Very nice post.

As a Christian, I would agree that real Christianity is not produced by ignorance, but instead by knowledge of the character of God. There is also the aspect of faith, which means believing when you don’t have direct proof. But that is far different from ignorance or stupidity.

People have faith in many things without direct proof or knowledge. Every time we sit down we have faith that the chair will not break—so much so that we don’t even think about it.

I agree with you that people must decide for themselves. If they want to have a relationship with Jesus it is a decision and not something that just happens because one goes to church.

A similar truth is evident when speaking of democracy. Just as a relationship with Jesus is a conscious commitment and decision, so being an active citizen of a democracy should be a commitment and decision.

We, as educators (I am a college student and future educator), should put time and effort into preserving our democracy—the framework that upholds the values and freedoms we cherish—because what democracy protects will perish unless we model for our students how to reason, dissent, debate, etc. to fight for and safeguard our freedoms.

We need to model to our students how to grapple with ideas. Rote memorization is not enough. I am a recent witness to some of the blindness and ignorance in our high school youth who are now of voting age.

Questioning, being informed dissenters, reason, logic, clarity, civility, debate.

When I see these words, I see a struggle for truth. And truth is not simply thrown into our laps; it is often a struggle. My generation (as well as many others in America) has become a complacent, post-modernistic, you-believe-your-thing & I-believe-mine generation.

This attitude is the opposite of real Christianity (which I embrace), democracy, and, ultimately, the search for truth that gives life meaning.

Actually, it doesn't really matter who you give up control to, God, the universe, your uncle Loki... You don't have any control in the first place. Sure you have control over your own body, but only to a point. Even the people you work for have more control over your life than you do.
My belief in God has no bearing on you, or who has control over your life.

But I do believe that if you want to have control over what morals you go by, you are your own "god" or whatever you call it. But that doesn't mean you actually have ANY control.

I do not attempt to control my own life. I make decisions on what I can, like what food I put into my body, where I put my furniture, etc., but I don't have control over whether there is money in the bank to buy that food. My husband is the one with the job that pays the bills. And he could be laid off or get sick, and would not make any money if that were the case. If I have to go out and find a job, the place I apply at have control over whether they hire me.

It's not an atheist thing, this wanting to have control, it's pretty much a human thing. Everyone WANTS to be in control of their own destiny, but none of us really are. Unless of course you commit suicide, but then, what if someone finds you and sends you to the hospital. No control. It's sad how we try and try, and yet fail to be in control of anything. We rely on other people to make the right decisions that affect our lives, and dare I say it, some of us even rely on God to guide those decisions and hope that he has our best interest at heart, because we all know that most people outside of ourselves do NOT have OUR best interest at heart, but their own.

Atheists are really good at attacking Christians without much substance. I really find it sad when Christians retaliate in the same way. I hope I've shown you what I mean about control without attacking your position. Whether you believe in him or not, Satan really does have a lot of control on your thoughts. He is, after all, the reason there is atheism in the world.

I do find it interesting that on a site that is called "exChristian" there are many who have had little experience with the church. But on another note, I have to agree with what someone said about having never been a Christian or been to church. Un-churched people aren't totally evil. Churched people (particularly Christians) aren't totally good. People choose Christianity because they find it to be the best answer. Also, they don't seem to mind the idea of someone else controlling the universe. Does that mean that "Person" controls their lives? In a sense, but not completely.
People who don't believe in God, or more specifically, the "ONE true God" touted by Christians, Jews and Muslims, most often do not believe in Him because they would rather feel in control of their lives. But let's all face it, we're not in control of our lives. None of us. You may be able to make your own choices, but the choices of others still have an effect on your life that you have no control over. It's up to you whether you want to give up that control to someone else, or continue to *think* that you are actually in control.

russell is not gothic, he is like my best friend. i cant' even believe that this is happening. he is not a bad kid. all the media is doing is making him look bad. the police have questioned me. this really is not as much as a big deal as people are making it sound. if anything i think that this 33yr old man talked him into doing this. russell is not a bad kid like they are making him sound like. and they should not be putting his name up. he is a minor. and they do not have the right to do that.

I do that all the time!! My friends call me the Olympic Shopper because finding bargains is the only sport I am good at. I tell everyone when I got a good deal. No mate - that very reason is why I contacted CA directly with my query. A traditional or standard wheel (ie. one that does NOT need to be on the list) is ANY all-metal rim (no matter what depth), OR any rim with a depth less than 25mm.

So CA have effectively expanded the definition of a traditional/standard rim beyond the UCI definition.

Mate, read the rules again. The Shimano RS-80's do NOT need to be on the list, as their rim depth is 24mm. They are considered 'traditional' or 'standard' wheels.....

Remember - the 'list' is only needed for non-compliant wheels (ie. rim depth greater than 25mm, &/or less than 16 spokes).

Mate, in some reporting of recent Ausbike tradeshow, it said the Zipp reps were specifically asked about UCI-compliance of the Zipp 202.

Apparently, the 202's have been submitted for testing, and they are just waiting for the UCI tick. So don't panic, your 202's will be (eventually) fine....

Hi all,

I recently corresponded with CA regarding this rule, as I wanted to clarify which of my wheels was OK.

They stated that the CA amendment to the UCI regs is all about the 'rims' - so if you have (a) a metal rim of any depth, and (b) at least 16 spokes, then you are 100% fine.

The UCI 'approved list' kicks in if you have carbon (or carbon/metal) rims greater than 25mm deep (or of course if you have any wheels with less than 16 spokes).

On a slightly seperate issue - I think the issue isn't whether or not this will be enforced prior to race start. I think its that you won't be covered in a race situation by the CA insurance if you are using non-regulation wheels... That is what would concern me more.....

As someone who has a limited time to ride (I'm one of those 10-hr/week guys!!), reliability & cost are the overwhelming keys to my gruppo choices. And that's why I go for Shimano.....

That said - I reckon Campy is aesthetically much more appealing (and not just because of the cable-free front end), and if I can ever afford some Italian lusciousness then it would be Campy all the way....

SRAM has me interested though - if it stands the test of time reliability wise, then I'd be tempted to give ita crack in a few years when I do my next gruppo upgrade.....

Surely cycling must be the only consume industry where the shops blame the cutomers (and NOT their business models) when they aren't profitable....!?!?

Maybe if the LBS's spent more time studying consumer trends, etc, and less time whining about the internet, then maybe they could come up with a solution. Its not MY job, as a consuer, to come up with that solution for them....

As for my vison for the future - I ahve always thought it would move towards a model where we stores would become "mechanical service centres", with parts, etc, more of a minor sideline. Much like the automotive industry, where you have the parts retailers (like Repco, Superchap, Autobarn, etc), and seperate to them you have the mechanics and repairers (like your local service garage, etc).

Oh, and I forgot to mention that we avoided berries for quite some time because they were on a list of the most allergenic foods that I was given. I know some people worry a lot more about food allergies than others, but this is something to think about as well!

Also, how long have you breastfed your kids? My son just gave up the boob at 19 months. I feel like we had a good run at it!

I have never heard the teeth thing either. That is interesting but I am also curious about really late teethers. We waited quite a while to introduce many foods as well. We did start with rice cereal as directed by our doctor. Of course if you talk to 10 different doctors you will get 10 different opinions and everyone seems to think he or she is right!

I enjoyed reading this post. Maybe when I have #2 I will follow more of your suggestions, but as you said every baby is different and every family is different so you must do what works for you!

Oh, and we ended up introducing yogurt at about 10 months. I didn't want to give him dairy but he was on antibiotics which were causing digestive issues and this did seem to help!

Oh that just annoys me! When I told the nurses at the hospital I wanted to nurse they brought my precious baby girl into me the first time got ready to put her up to my nipple and looked at me and said now don't be discouraged if this doesn't work. I have been to two different bases that had that exact same park. Wright Patterson in Ohio and Elmendorf in Alaska. I wonder if it is a standard military playground? yes we always called it the splinter park for obvious reasons!
