It really bothers me too when people talk about "real" Chilean experiences. Why must we qualify something that is unique to each individual?

I LOVED this post Kyle, because you put into words exactly how I feel about Sanitaguinos but couldn't quite express. It was like this big enigma, I like my Santiaguino friends, but I don't like Santiaguinos, how can this be? Oh don't worry, they didn't used to be on the bus, they still are! You can buy anything from parche-curitias to toe nail clippers to ball point pens to mani tostado to helados. I almost bought some scissors the other day for only $500 pesos, but realized I had nothing smaller than a $5000 bill. Pucha.

Having grown up on a dairy farm, I've read this joke a few times, but the at the end were some good ones I haven't read before. While I was reading I was like, I hope she does a Chilean one at the end!! And you did, and it was great :)

I worry about this too. Since I was 18 I've been bopping around from place to place. Now that I want to settle down for a bit here in Sgo, I worry that I won't like the sedentary lifestyle. Although I think it'll be a little while before Sgo is plain vanilla for me.


I think your trip around the world is just what you need, though. It will give you a chance to get away from the plain vanilla and hopefully find a place where you and S. want to live. I think there are ways to challenge yourself without having to change countries every couple of years (at least I hope to god there is!!).

That being said, I'm glad you're not quitting Kyle. That would have made me quite sad.

That game was great. I've never been that into soccer, but since coming here it has definitely won me over.


And from what I've heard, Bielsa has done amazing things. Yesterday my friends were all like "Look a that weon run! They didn't run like that before Bielsa came..."

Haha, Kyle you're hilarious! I would have reacted the same way to that Weon who bumped into you. In fact, sometimes just walking on the street people bump into me and it takes a LOT of will power not to shove them right back.


Also, good luck! I was thinking about doing in the 10K that day, but then remembered that it's my birthday that day and the last thing I want to be doing on my birthday is schlepping myself around Santiago...

I heard the fire trucks go by awhile ago...I bet that's what it was for. Every time I hear a fire truck I always say a little prayer for both the firemen and the people who are inside the building that is burning. I hope everyone in that building is okay.

Stat Counter also drives me batty. Way before I gave anyone the link to my blog I had someone from Columbia, Maryland who read every day and I never found out who they were. Also, I hate it when there is no referring link (unless I pretty much know who they are).

I haven't ever gotten a piropo from a midget, but I have gotten a group one from a bus of escolares all around 8 years old.

Poor Papito!! I'm glad she's doing better. I pass another 24 hour Vet clinic when I go to the park to run. It's at Antonio Varas 1715. I don't have experience there, because I don't have a pet here (sad!) but just so you have options.

I think that here in Chile flaite has (at least) two definitions. One, as you said, denotes a way of acting that is socially inappropriate, like being a huge jerk. This is the only way I ever use flaite here. Unfortunately, Chileans use it also to denote social status, especially when it is used in a more negative manner, like "flaite de mierda" or "flaite culiado". Now that I think about it though, the "socially unacceptable" behavior is classist in itself, because I feel like it's "socially unacceptable" BECAUSE it's associated with the lower classes, like getting on the micro from the back door. But really, being a jerk transcends class boundaries, so who knows.


For some reason, I have more experience with the word flaite than with cuico (or is it quico, Heather?) What does that say about me? Hmmm...

I've heard of hair getting curly after puberty, so maybe hair getting straighter has something to do with hormones as well. Anyway, you look fab. And your baby/little kid pictures are way cute.

My favorite was, "Eres hermosa como una mariposa" or maybe the time a guy started singing "Dankeshoen, Baby, Dankeshoen" (spelling??) to my friend and I because he thought we were German.

Your experience sounds exactly like mine when they filmed me at Ben and Jerry's. We were all sitting around eating ice cream and chatting while they were filming us and then they would say, "Hey, actually could you say that again and then lick your spoon?" And then we each had little interviews and we would say something, and the girl would say "okay, could you say that again but using these words?" It sounds like you had a great time!
