in Moving Shelves Pass Customers in New Self-service Store on Modern Mechanix
Looks like it could be kind of fun. Rather impractical for the store, though, since it probably cuts down on impulse buys.

in Compact Copying Machine Is Portable on Modern Mechanix
That looks REALLY portable to me. Yeah.

Actually, I don't think most copiers have shrunk much in size, have they? They probably weigh a lot less, though.

in Eat Me - Shameless Family Promotion on Modern Mechanix
That menu is pretty darn scary! And I'm kinda scared by the thought of mac & cheese pancakes... But the Gallant sandwich sounds good. :-D

It says something about the restaurant, though, that it doesn't need the most well designed menu to keep people coming back.

in Pastry Baked From Inside Out on Modern Mechanix
Must've been difficult to remove from that spit. Plus, the inside probably often got over done, I would guess. Still, looks pretty interesting.

2035? That's only a little more than a quarter century away now. Better get working on those giant plants and animals!

I think it's an advertisement for a woodworking kit or something? Definitely hard to see exactly. It says:

How YOU

with SUPERSHOP

???? POWER TOOL ???

in Motorbike Racer for Youngsters on Modern Mechanix
Things like this make me wonder how any of these people ever grew up to be our parents and grandparents.

Then things like banning the 'dangerous' sport of dodgeball make me wonder what's going to be left for our children and grandchildren to enjoy.

Ah! That would make sense, George. I hadn't even thought about that.

I like the "news reports in plain English" part. What else would the news reports be in?

in Spudnuts on Modern Mechanix
For everyone who's been looking for info about Spudnut franchises, a little seaching turned up this page:

http://ruthvenphotos.com/files/spudnuts.html

Which, among other things, says that Spudnuts is no longer a national company. Spudnuts shops still open apparently have their own recipes, because they're no longer getting their mix from anyone.

If you want a mix to try to make some at home http://sbuddies.com/ sells their own version.

And, these days, those same problems could be solved on a home computer with one person entering the data. I wonder if they're still using that exact same computer there, though. The government is slow to change anything that works. :-D

I must say... Whatever the title, that 'cow' is starting to really creep me out!

in The Most Dangerous Place in the WORLD on Modern Mechanix
"And when your luckless friend explains his black eye was caused by walking against an open door, his explanation is probably true. Far more black eyes do result from open doors in passages and hallways than from fists."

I've never understood how someone could get a black eye from a door. A door is flat. Your face is not, with eyes being slightly sunken in (compared to the rest of your face). And, if you're standing upright, your feet stick out further than your nose.

So how do you get a black eye that way? Peeping through a keyhole?

I was briefly wondering what 'wife grass' was, until I saw the actual pic.

in Behind the Scenes with the MARCH of TIME on Modern Mechanix
If you search for "March of Time" on YouTube (with quotes added) a number of results are displayed. Here's one for the birth of swing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJNR9h94ni0

They're much longer than I would've thought. The swing one is only part of the full one, according to the infobox, but it's nearly 7 minutes long. How times are different. Most modern news is, what, maybe a minute long?

I want one! So much cooler looking than the customary notecards. And doesn't fail if you forget to charge batteries, like an iPod might. :-)

Charlene, maybe he's a very bad robber and has been there for awhile. He doesn't seem to be trying very hard to crack the safe.

in Waterproof Sand Exhibited on Modern Mechanix
If I remember correctly, you can make this by spraying normal sand with Scotch Guard a number of times, letting it dry completely and then stirring the sand around to remix it before the next application.

I think the resulting mixture is called 'moon sand'?

It's pretty cool to see this stuff at work in YouTube videos.

I'm pretty sure he's supposed to be a 'hobo clown', hence the beard and otherwise lack of makeup. Other than that? I can't explain this at all!

in Motorboating in a Washtub on Modern Mechanix
Since the thing 'promptly submerged', I'm guessing that this is probably a photo or two take on shore, demonstrating how it'll be used, plus the lake background/foreground added for effect.

Those 'weird artifacts' around the motor and feet are likely supposed to be giving an impression of speed.

in Swallows New Camera to Get 16 Pictures of Stomach (Jul, 1934) on Modern Mechanix
"Each of the sixteen “shots” are developed into circular pictures two inches in diameter which taken together give a complete representation of the inside of a patient’s stomach."

How do they know it's complete? The thing doesn't look like it has much in the way of actual directional control nor any way to see what you're taking a picture of either.

in Mother Hen Eats Dye, Chicks Hatch Out Freakish Colors (Jan, 1933) on Modern Mechanix
jayessell: That's exactly what they used to be for, actually. Colored Easter chicks. Though, I'm pretty sure that they started simply dipping the chicks in dye. I think. Either way, can't be good for the chicken.
