in Twitter raises new funds: you’re worth $42! on Scobleizer
Twitter's business model?

If they want to go after big money, they've got to get less social and more business focused. LinkedIN has got a revenue model b/c they take advantage of big time business people who use their premium services to do research for their businesses.

With Twitter being open source, I bet they'll be a lot of premium services that aren't necessarily owned by twitter, but will allow companies do better research on themselves, competitors and do market analysis on their customers.

There could be a lot of interesting tools that search all the past tweets and see what was said, constantly monitor and organize this information...

It's interesting to see the push and pull between the mainstream media companies
who are publishing stuff like Gossip Girl online and the guys like Diggnation
and Gary Vaynerchuk who are just putting out stuff on the 'net as upstarts.

Who will win the advertising game? The big guys or the little guys?

Jared, that's the attitude man. We've only got one spring semester to jump all over things, so let's do it. Everyone should be fully refreshed after a crazy semester and then some good holiday recouperation. Start today.

in Clarifying the Gen Y Stereotypes on By Teresa Wu
I don't understand why people say our generation has no discipline--seriously? Sure, we look to work smarter not harder but look at our generation versus previous generations, it's way more common for us to go to college and succeed--we've clearly raised the bar as a generation, just as every generation before us has.

If you love what you do it's not work remember!

"hanging out" on social media, reading RSS, connecting people on twitter, interacting with tons of awesome people seems like a hell of a lot of fun!

It's the clients calling that can seem like work

in 2008/12/11/how-to-get-the-most-out-of-stumbleupon/ on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
Stumble is way cooler than digg b/c of the social aspects of the site. You can actually meet people who like the same stuff you do, exchange back and forth, help them and they help you.

SU, like any social media tool only works when you put yourself out there to help like minded people

in Marketers: Stay Away From Digg on Josh Klein Web Strategy
Josh, I think you are right on here. Trying to drive traffic by digging and shouting your stuff really doesn't do it for me. Sending stuff to people on StumbleUpon who you know will be interested is a totally different deal. SU is really a social thing, people meet on their and get married. Digg really just is a place where crazy stories get to the top--plus it's controlled by all the same "top diggers" anyway.

joshklein I agree Matt, and this is something we both should know a thing or two about since we send stuff directly to each other via StumbleUpon all the time. I'm pretty sure that's how I know you :)

At some point I'll need to talk about StumbleUpon at length, but I agree that it is totally different than Digg -- and there is a place there for marketers specifically because of how the site works and people behave. Thanks for bringing it up!

in Young Entrepreneur Dilemma on MindFrenzy
I think this dilemma comes from what we like to call 'societal normalization'. Pressure from professors, parents and other non-entrepreneur friends to get your safe secure job with good benefits after school does not help. When people get excited about an idea, unless they are surrounded by entrepreneurial minded people they have no support group to go to. Going out on your own at any age is tough, but when your young people look at you as "young and stupid." It's a self fulfilling prophecy, if you think that your lack of experience is going to be a huge problem in achieving your entrepreneurial ambitions, than it will be. If you believe that your ready to take on the world, harness a tribe and execute-- THEN YOU WILL.

Support yourself with people who believe in you, who won't shoot down your BIG DREAMS and keep your eye on the prize.

If this goal is really your end all be all, you'll get over the fact you might not have as much time to party, will get critcized by your friends making base salary right out of school and your parents saying "when's this kid going to get a job". Don't let anyone squash your dreams.

Chris, thanks for the advice. You laid out some nice ways to claim your expertise on the subject that you are looking to speak about. How about some resources for people who want to polish their skills and get to keynote level?

in Do Numbers Have Enough Value? on .eduGuru
Rachel, thanks for tweeting this to me. It's really hard to quantify anything in social media, traditional business people are looking at the bottom line saying "what's our ROI"?

Looking at these things qualitatively you have to ask yourself "how deep is the impact were having on our customer base through our social media efforts?"

It's easy to slap some numbers on something, but of course it's about the content and the feeling of "connectivity" that we get from all this social media stuff!

in What Not To Do With Investor Money on TheDerekJohnson.com
It's pretty pathetic what happens to people when they get their hands on money. They lose sight of their end goal, which was hopefully in the first place, was to create a sustainable company. Americans especially, forget that the accumulation of wealth is not measured by how much you spend! And DEFINITELY not when your a startup!

Also, I really like the Top commentators section of this blog. I'm not crazy about comment luv, but it's the same type of idea--engage and reward the people who help build your community. Great stuff

in Create a Journalist Listening Station on Duct Tape Marketing
I think this strategy is genius. The worst thing you can do is bombard journalists or customers--if you become a good resource on subjects and help them out they'll be more than willing to help you out.

Jason Calcanis gave me the tip, to follow your favorite bloggers/journalists very closely and as soon as you see they've published something be the first one to comment. It goes a long way to making it seem like you really care about the authors writing.

(I'm glad I'm the second one to post on this topic!)

Follow your journalists on Twitter and hopefully when they tweet their new post, pick it up right away and get to commenting!

“A really good idea is simple, unexpected and relevant. And it unites extremes: it should risk a lot but nevertheless be easy to implement. Everyone should talk about it, but existing customers should not be irritated by it.”

in Why Haven’t You Started a Blog for Your Small Business? on MindFrenzy
If you can get people to come back to read your blog and have products/services to sell them based around it you have a HUGE advantage. You don't need to plug your products, you don't need to even talk about your business, just provide CONTENT. Think of Gary Vaynerchuk at winelibrary.tv he just has a good video blog that people want to come back and see.... the result HUGE WINE SALES.

in Seth Godin’s “Remarkable” Launch of Tribes on MindFrenzy
Seth, I like a couple things about your comment--
1. You are incredibly sincere, your commenting on blogs, you don't act like a big shot, and you truly do want people to read and form community around your *lessons *(not necessarily your book) (people think book they think sales) .
2. My grandfather doesn't know what a blog is, my dad doesn't care to subscribe to RSS feeds, but they'd both read your book and take these teachings to their own businesses

Also...
"After this happened I went onto Triiibes to see if everyone else had the same experience. I found that everyone was talking about it whether they had received their free copy yet or not. I realized then what a great way to create viral marketing right there. Every person who got a free copy talked about the fact that they got a free early copy of Seth’s new book for the rest of the day"

***This is also a great way to get people to return to the network and become more active-- It's COMMUNITY FORMING. Even more so, having a real live event like the one in NYC, is a great way for Tribes people and readers of your blog to connect. A great social network is backed up by having people who meet on the network AND in real life. (This is why http://crowdvine.com is so effective)

Seth Godin is genius. I'm sorry I missed out on this. Even though he says it's not about selling books its about commitment to the network he's obviously going to sell more books.

However, it may not be about the money. Hopefully he just loves to spread his enthusiasm. Besides he's got plenty of dough if you read his BW article
