My general point that the mainstream view of hair is constructed around white realities to the exclusion of most others.

Another example are the Dark and Lovely commercials- do we ever see them during the Grey's Anatomy or during the news hour? Just on BET. If whites don't watch BET or TV One if they never discussed hair with Blacks friends- would they necessarily know of the product line?

Re: Wednesday Open Thread

Here is the official trailer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A68UVn0nMvo

Movie opens October 9th

Re: Wednesday Open Thread

IE: the name of their hair products, the "in" hair style aka Jennifer Anniston etc

Re: Wednesday Open Thread

In an age where so many Americans claim color blindness (and I'm going to resist saying white Americans because other groups perpetuate this mess too,) it is crucial to see how this stance has maintained the social distance between groups. Color blindness has led to lack of consciousness and understanding and nurtured intellectual blindness on matters of race.

Society is perpetuating the myth that everyone is the same- and we are- in the sense we all enjoy security, want to be respected and loved etc. Yet in these moments we also realize that we are all different for example- hair.

What IS fascinating is the very truth that white people don't HAVE to know the basics of Black hair while Blacks HAVE to know the basics of white's hair. I hope this provides for opportunities to name the truth we live in a white dominated world. And it gives white people one MORE way to see how their reality is constructed without ever having to know about people of color UNLESS a comedic film is created about it.

What I pray happens is that we CONTINUE to have productive discussions, those of us who still have the motivation to nurture change, that is. I can empathize on what a waste of time it feels like or feeling like I have had that same conversation a dozen times. But I am committed to having the kind of relationships with people that build understanding or time and in the spirit of nonjudgmental truth telling. One conversation does not make for true understanding just like one movie won't. Remember that adults who finally get it will have children who get it more and so on... And the more we speak our truth aloud and in the mainstream distancing it from shame... the more we will be understood- and this goes WAY beyond hair.

Whoopi for all her great qualities has yet to recognize that the lack of Black voices on television makes her a de facto spokesperson despite her not wanting to be one. Sherri- I continue to have no words for her. Every day I hope she goes away, and alas she doesn't...

Re: Wednesday Open Thread

http://www.capitalwirepr.com/pr_description.php...

MAJOR NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS COME TOGETHER TO MOBILIZE COMMUNITIES OF COLOR FOR FINAL PUSH ON HEALTH CARE REFORM

The organizations -- the NAACP National Voter Fund, the National Council of La Raza, the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, the Campaign for Community Change, the United States Student Association and PowerPAC.org -- said they will work together to make certain that the voices of people of color are heard, and heeded, as the health care reform debate enters its final, critical days.

The groups released television and print ads in English and Spanish that will run initially in four states with sizable African-American and Latino populations – Florida, North Carolina, Louisiana and Arkansas. The ads are part of a grassroots effort to ensure that members of Congress appreciate the importance of reform to the people of color they represent.

The ads can be viewed online starting on Oct. 5 at http://www.healthequityforall.org.

"If we had enacted real health care reform in the past decade, then we would have saved the lives of 880,000 African-Americans,” said Benjamin Todd Jealous, attending the briefing in his role as board member of the NAACP National Voter Fund.

“The members of Congress in these states are out of touch with the voices of their constituents. Real people are going bankrupt, losing their homes and even dying for real health care reform in this country,” said Jealous, who also serves as president and chief executive officer of the NAACP.

The latest U.S. Census estimates confirm that there are more than 100 million people of color in the country, 33 percent of the population. In several key states, the percentage of people of color is even greater, approaching 40 percent in Florida and Louisiana. These constituencies comprise the building blocks for a new majority that can reshape the policies and priorities of the country.

A newly released report by the group “Health Care for America Now!” finds that African Americans and Latinos are more likely to go without health care because they cannot afford it, are less than half as likely as whites to have a regular doctor and that people of color have the highest rates of being uninsured.

”The health care debate is an important one for all Americans but absolutely no one has more at stake than communities of color,” said Janet Murguía, NCLR’s president and chief executive officer. “We need health care reform that embodies the highest and best values of our nation.”

The organizations called for a health system that:

* Includes a public option to compete with private insurance companies.
* Covers all U.S. residents regardless of pre-existing condition or employment status.
* Is comprehensive and affordable for everyone.
* Ensures the highest quality of care for everyone.

"Our organizations have been working tirelessly on health care reform all along. Now that it’s crunch time, our collective efforts are critical to making sure that the reforms that become law enable everyone, including communities of color, to have access to affordable, quality health care,” said Wade Henderson, president and chief executive officer of LCCR.

Added CCC Executive Director Deepak Bhargava: “We believe health care is a basic human right, as essential as food and shelter. No one should have to go without health care because of a lack of income.”

Re: Republican members of Congress put Steele back in his place

"Punks jump up to get beat down"

Re: Tuesday Open Thread

This needs to be a major post. What she is saying is vague:
"So far, Obama has been unwilling to adopt policies specifically geared towards closing this ever-widening divide." Which ones is she talking about? Did this discussion fall to the wayside while our economy was bleeding out? Need more info before I believe this person...

"Almost all of the public debate about the conference focused on its supposed anti-Israel bias. When it actually took place in April in Geneva, virtually all we heard about was Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's inflammatory speech, which was met with rowdy disruptions, from the EU delegates who walked out, to the French Jewish students who put on clown wigs and red noses, and tried to shout him down." AND HOW IS IT THE FAULT OF THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION?

"The US civil rights movement had embraced the first Durban conference, held in summer 2001, with great enthusiasm, viewing it as the start of the final stage of Martin Luther King's dream for full equality. Though most black leaders offered only timid public criticism of the president's Durban II boycott, the decision was discussed privately as his most explicit betrayal of the civil rights struggle since taking office." Obama said this STRAIGHT UP during the campaign. He would not be the President of Black America, he was going to be President for ALL America. Again I really feel like this vague speak- the Civil Rights Movement? Who is that? I didn't even know there WAS a movement. Who are these people? Congressional Black Caucus didn't support Obama- they supported Hillary Clinton. Betrayal? The economy was bottoming out and he had work to do at home. It's not like he was playing golf in Hawaii. Who is this chick writing this article? Talk about paternalistic.

"The overriding message was that even though the most visible signs of racism had largely disappeared – colonial rule, apartheid, Jim Crow-style segregation – profound racial divides will persist and even widen until the states and corporations that profited from centuries of state-sanctioned racism pay back some of what they owe." So let me get this straight. Obama is supposed to be undoing ALL OF THIS in the form of REPARATIONS in his first 8 months WHILE we are in an economic meltdown, while the country is buggin the hell out that a Black guy is President, and while we also have a few wars going on too... lol... in a country where Sotomayor acknowledging her cultural heritage having an influence on her lens is construed as racism... lol WOW. I love idealism but this is like a an anti racist fairy tale.

"What is tantalising (and maddening) about Obama is that he has the skills to persuade a great many Americans of the justice of such an endeavour."Does she really think that making a speech is enough to change people's minds? Curb their fears? Unravel every nuanced bit of prejudice that took 500 years to produce?

"The crisis in African American wealth has only been deepened by the larger economic crisis." I agree.

"If Obama traced the Wall Street collapse back to the policies of redlining and Jim Crow, all the way to the betrayed promise of 40 acres and a mule for freed slaves, a broad sector of the American public might well be convinced that finally eliminating the structural barriers to full equality is in the interests not just of minorities but of everyone who wants a more stable economy." I agree as well, but does she REALLY THINK that Obama could reverse this in his first three months in office?

"In his Philadelphia "race speech", Obama was emphatic that race was something "this nation cannot afford to ignore"; that "if we simply retreat into our respective corners, we will never be able to come together and solve challenges like healthcare, or education, or the need to find good jobs for every American". Yet as soon as the speech had served its purpose (saving Obama's campaign from being engulfed by the Wright scandal), he did simply retreat. And his administration has been retreating from race ever since." I'm really starting to get pissed. She offers ALL of this criticism and without a CONTEXT of what ELSE is happening in the US. I have a question. WHEN THE FUCK WAS THIS WHITE CHICK THE FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. It's really easy sitting her blonde experience to dismiss the challenges he faces as a black man, or better the FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT of AMERIKKKA.

I'll tackle the rest another time. Dthomas, how dare this white lady sit in judgement of an experience and a job she has no clue about. How dare she lay the issue that has been plaguing the US since its inception as the sole responsibility of the first Black President. Number 1: she may think of herself as anti racist- but her chastisement of this Black man is RACIST as hell. She gotta lot of freakin nerve. Number 2: her lack of context makes her sound like a wingnut. Number 3: I'm sick and tired of anti racists, civil rights people, and everyone else asserting what people should be doing based on THEIR identity. He was a moderate. He was always a moderate. Raging liberals made him their messiah but he never ever said or whispered anywhere... "don't worry ya'll Imma get us reparations." Does he think it? I have to say maybe he does, did he say he could accomplish such a feat on the campaign? No? It's like lighting a match and walking through a sprinkler. That idea will more than likely fail.

Here are my thought: Naomi can suck it. White liberal racist. I don't have the stomach to read the last 4 paragraphs. I apologize for the cussing but this article made me MAD as hell.

Re: Tuesday Open Thread

Ok I see why you are upset.
