Inside was an installation consisting of a shopping cart filled with large pans and big spoons. Over it was a sign that read "Always keep these things in your home: You never know when you will need to take to the streets in large number and make loud noise."

Re: How to Wreck Your Brand in a Single Weekend

What a great analysis. With credit and permission, I'm adding this to upcoming client sessions. This topic comes up all the time, and you've perfectly captured what happened...and what have should have happened.

D

Re: Most Agencies & Publishers Fail To Offer Real Ways To Embrace Social Media

Right on, Max. Your key insight -- "The imperatives lie in deconstructing and rebuilding their cultures and attitudes toward customers and the marketplace" -- sums up the challenge. It's no longer about spin/push/control but rather listen/pull/participate.

Simply using a social channel - posting TV spot on YouTube in the hopes that it "go viral" - is not all what social media is about. Instead, it's the re-engineering of the organization to first listen, and then act in unison across operations and marketing to deliver on what was learned from the marketplace collective.

The agencies that do this will be the long term winners.

Re: Ten Aspects of Web 2.0 Strategy That Every CTO and CIO Should Know [Dion Hinchcliffe's Web 2.0 Blog]

Solid comments for CTO/CIO. Looking at the list, you can think of these (and the CIO/CTO) as the "left brain" half of the current transformational processes. The "right brain" is the necessary, complementary role of the CMO/COO in working jointly to innovate and create both a message (expectation) and product or service (actual experience) that drives beneficial social conversations. [Or, conversely, jointly applying social knowledge gained to the organization to correct the current delivery of a poor experience.] The above follows from the basic notion that you cannot control social media -- as you can control traditional media -- but instead must work in [acceptable] ways that influence it. That too is a huge shift in thinking.

As this post makes clear, social media is practical, measurable, and accessible for a much wider range of applications and businesses than are tapping it now.
