The original article title was absolutely disgusting and you are NOT absolved by simply changing it. "sexual relationship" with a 10 year-old?!??!? Whoever wrote that original headline should be fired and sent to mandatory therapy. That is RAPE, plain and simple.

You're right, the brain is a pattern-making machine, and my job is a perfect example. I've been in the food service industry for 4 years and am currently a cashier in the DC Metro area. I have dealings with hundreds of people every day, from all different backgrounds. You begin to notice the same behaviors from people who have similar backgrounds.

Statistically, there are always exceptions to the rules, but for the most part, I can predict how my interactions with a customer will turn out. It helps me to be a more efficient employee because I can anticipate a customer's needs before they even ask.

Hispanic men tend to pay with $100 bills. Checking my $20 bills ahead of time saves a lot of headache, and a lot of time running back and forth to the office to restock my drawer. They always tip. Usually $1-2.

If an old person is going to pay with cash, they're going to give exact change (or at the very least, look for it). Their order total will be $10.13, they'll hand you a $20, then once you go to type $20 in the register, they'll tell you they have the change and proceed to spend a good 30 seconds rifling through their pockets or purse. Those 30 seconds are VALUABLE. I usually step away from the register and send orders back while they're looking. Predicting this saves me quite a bit of time and headache.

Black people hardly ever tip, no matter how nice you are to them. They will ask for extra sauces and make a point to do so once they've already paid, so I'm sure to ask them before I ring them up. If they order a medium pizza or larger, they will ask for plates. I would also say that 9 out of every 10 black (or hispanic) men that walk in by themselves order a steak and cheese.

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

If a pattern appears after hundreds upon hundreds of people come through those doors, I'd be an idiot to dismiss it as coincidence. It's important to learn and adapt. Like it or not, this is why I'm good at my job. If you've ever had excellent service at a restaurant, chances are they operate in the same fashion.

I really don't care if someone calls me racist. To ignore patterns and cultural differences is monumentally stupid.

I'm not saying all black people are on welfare. I'm not even saying there aren't a lot of white people on welfare. But statistically, STATISTICALLY... well, you get the idea. To ignore the facts is absolutely absurd.

I'm an Atheist and, believe it or not, I celebrate Christmas. My family celebrated Christmas when I was little, and they still do. Christmas is actually my favorite holiday, because it reminds me so much of the great times I used to have when I was a kid. I feel that Christmas lost a lot of its' religious meaning a long, long time ago, and it really holds no religious significance for me either. Something about the smell of fresh baked cookies, the lights of the tree and wrapping presents (among other things) just resurrects my inner child. I even display a manger and listen to Christmas music (yes, even the songs that ACTUALLY talk about Jesus) because my mother did the same around me when I was a kid. I think we all give Christmas (or whatever we choose to celebrate during that time of year) our own personal meaning because the commercialization of it kind of sucked out whatever meaning it had left.

I really hope I never find myself in that situation. I can't really say what choice I'd make because I have absolutely no idea what it's like, but I can say that it's comforting to know I'll have a choice. It's our job as the adult in the situation to make the choices that would best benefit the child. Whether the child is a fetus or 10 years old, it's our responsibility to make the choices; so why is it so scary that in this instance the child has no choice? If I were to abort a pregnancy, it would be because I wouldn't want my child to be raised by an unfit parent; whether it be me or some other person in the foster care system. I know what it's like to come from a broken home, and quite frankly it isn't much of a life at all. I'd much rather spare that child pain than inflict it.

It takes guts to make a decision like that. It's something these women are going to have to live with for the rest of their lives, but they did it because they felt it was the best decision to make for their unborn child. I applaud each and every one of them for sharing their story and helping women everywhere faced with this difficult choice.

I'm really on the fence with this one.

I don't mean to pick at semantics, but "so help ME god" is more of a personal statement than a generalization of the entire US population's religious preference like oh, say, "one nation under god." It's more of an expression of his own way of being dedicated to his job as president. Basically I read it as, "If I don't live up to my duties, may God strike me down." Sure, as an atheist I don't believe in a god and to me personally ending an oath with something like that wouldn't bear any weight. For Obama to end his oath with "so help me god" as a Christian, it means he truly believes that he cannot speak the name of God to bear witness to a lie, or else he'll face some major Godly wrath. And once again, even though I don't think it's possible for a god I don't believe exists to unleash his supposed wrath upon the poor man, HE does. It's like imagining the worst thing possible, then swearing that you'll do something or else that horrible thing will happen to you. Now that I think about it, it's amazingly grim xD

At the same time, not a lot of people have the ability to empathize with an oath that doesn't bear weight with them personally. Even if some people DO believe in some sort of god, they still won't make that leap from one religion to another and still feel alienated by Obama including "so help me God" at the end. Yes, it is a personal statement for him to make, but as the president elect of the US, he has a responsibility to remain as objective as possible. Personal matters really have no place in politics, especially if your upcoming presidency is already expected to unite people on all fronts, whether the divisions amongst those people be political, racial, religious, etc. But really, no matter what choice he makes, people are still going to feel left out in some way or other. If he takes it out, non-theists and people from non-Christian theistic faiths may be impressed, but many Christians will be taken aback and possibly lose faith in him. If he leaves it in... well, all the Christians will be included as usual and us non-theists and non-Christians will fade into the background like we always do.

Believe it or not, I don't mean to offend. Nor do I reserve offense for people who hold opposing views. In fact, I enjoy discussing issues with people who have different views on things as it helps me to grow as a person.

I've only been dropping by this blog for the past few days and I've seen some people throw some exceptionally harsh words at the author of this blog (Holly) for merely stating her opinion.

My words were directed (mostly in anger) at Mark. I apologize if I've offended you as you seem to be a very respectful person who deserves that same respect in return.

As for what I said about Palin putting her daughter on display, what I think may be possible is they've known about her pregnancy. I think the McCain campaign saw it as a tool to push their pro-life agenda.

Holly, I just want to thank you for continuing to put words to what have been my thoughts for YEARS. You may have an almost constant barrage of people preaching to you about reason when they believe in something as unreasonable as the bible (as well as the belief that it somehow conveys the word of 'god'), but I'm here to say that I, for one, see through their hypocrisy and blind accusations.

While Mark may call Palin a "very strong independent woman of sound moral character," I think those words fit YOU much better. You're a kind, caring person who is genuinely concerned for the well-being of women everywhere.

Palin is using her private life to perpetuate the republican pro-life agenda. If someone think using their own family and putting their pregnant daughter who is still a CHILD on display is any less of a crime than the atrocity they claim abortion is, then their moral compass is seriously out of whack.

As a Hillary supporter from the get-go, I can't agree with the last line in this entry more.

I'm like a human hair farm for them xD I've donate hair twice (a foot each time) and will continue to grow my hair out, cut it short to donate (a nice stylish Aeon-Flux-eqsue bob!), then grow it out again! It makes me so happy, because everyone always tells me how much they love my hair, and I'm overjoyed to know that someone in need out there will be getting those same compliments.

While I understand the outrage over the word seemingly discrediting what the victim (and evidence) claim, it's used as more of a legal safeguard. Any major news organization could be sued for libel or slander if somehow, in SOME unlikely way, he turned out not to be the person who had raped that little girl.

In my opinion, while it is pretty fucked up that even with overwhelming evidence the word 'allegedly' is used, I think actually witnessing the event happening is one of the only few ways you can really use the word with absolute certainty.

Currently I'm trying to get an individual banned from anime conventions across the country. He sexually assaulted my friend right in front of me, and there have been a few other girls that have come forward to me with tales of their experiences with him. Like I said above, I can totally understand your reaction to the word 'allegedly.' He can't get banned from any conventions until he is actually convicted of sexual assault since the supposed "allegations" are not enough to break off the contractual agreement. They have to be proven in a court of law before he can be banned from the very conventions that give him access to the very women he assaults.

Unfortunately part of his scheme is getting girls from southern states and bringing them to work for him at conventions in states farther up north. Oftentimes these girls don't come forward because they feel doing so will jeopardize their ability to get home (since he buys the plane tickets).

So here's some food for thought for the others who've replied: the word allegedly is a safeguard for the accused, but what sort of safeguards are there for the victim? The legal system obviously isn't working in their favor.
