Personally, I hate the dispersion of discussion. I post one blog post and comments come in via Plaxo, Twitter, Facebook, and now FriendFeed. Not to mention the blog itself. I wish that conversation all happened in one place. Maybe that's what friendfeed wants to accomplish, but it's too much work to structure it all ...

We are brothers in GTD geekiness. The only difference in our workflows is that I use Things rather than RTM and Omnifocus. I've tried out all the apps and Things is definitely my favorite.

Hi Tim, thanks for continuing the conversation. First, let me clarify, as I did on Kirk's blog, that I was being tongue in cheek when suggesting a 'government bailout' of the journalism industry. I am certainly not advocating for a one-time dump of money in order to fix what is clearly a broken system. But I do think that, unless private philanthropy steps in big, we're eventually going to want federal money to fund the sort of news and information (international coverage, for example) that had previously been subsidized by the revenue generated from classified ads and advertising.

I completely agree with the ideal of tearing down the unnecessary marketplace between writer and reader. I also support ideas like Spot.us, but crowdfunding of news (if it works) carries its own risks. After all, those who are most likely to fund a story about, say, the safety of San Francisco's water, will probably have a biased interest in how the story is reported. (Also, that was one of the very first stories to get pitched on Spot.us, even before it went public, and it has yet to attract enough money to be reported.

Nor has the tip jar model worked. And my friends who write for Slate.com - hardly the beacon of serious journalism - are sometimes paid only $100 a week.

My colleague Ethan Zuckerman has done a good job listing all the possible funding models for what he calls "difficult journalism" - those stories we know we should read, but sometimes have to convince ourselves to invest the time to do so.

I, too, think it's OK if the empire of journalism collapses, but meanwhile there are really cool projects taking shape (like the ones I mentioned, but also the one I work on, Global Voices) which should be made sustainable because they offer an important public service. Sort of like scientific research, highways, mailmen, and lifeguards.

One of the very first projects of Global Voices was a wiki-based Bridge Blog Directory. We had separate pages for each national blogosphere and the idea was that one representative from each blogosphere would curate, contextualize, and update the directory - basically, what you're proposing for India. Beth Kanter did a great job with the Cambodian blogosphere for a few months. After about six months though every page was out of date. It would be great if we've reached a point were individuals (or groups) were willing to keep such a directory maintained. I think it would make a valuable resource.

One of my favorite sites to compare editor's front page selections is Newseum's Today's Front Pages which gathers images (and PDFs) of front pages from 251 papers in 36 countries. I try to visit it daily and have a look around.

And - for the most part - I agree with you about NC Times being San Diego's best paper. The Union Tribune has put some ridiculous stories on its front pages.

I felt the exact same. Before Air America I figured I hated talk radio because it was conservative. No I realize I just hate talk radio because it is talk radio. And Tom, great point - there is definitely more room in the market for something else like NPR that is not NPR. In fact, more and more I've been reading about disgruntled NPR employees and I wish they would get together and form their own intellegent and responsible alternative.

Well, I was definitely not "furious," but I do think it is a step back in KPBS's integrity.

And I agree that disclosure is for sure not necessary in all cases - yours is a good example - but journalists should disclose when there is a possible confict of interest. Which with the Wal-Mart story there was. (by the way, did you hear what the Santee mayor said about Wal-Mart and how it's "against policy" do say who the biggest tax renovator is in their city?)

I'm curious to hear from more reporters - especially from KPBS.

So finally ... I get to hear you live on the radio and this is my question: is there an official academy of public radio pronunciation? There is huh? The way an extra syllable finds its way into the important words .. the measured, but not monotone expression ... the raspy, but not smokes-a-pack-a-day baritone pitch.

These are things that must be acquired, I am sure of it. So spill the beans, what are your secrets?
