As a professional editor, I have to say that even for fiction, professional editing costs a lot more than the "$500+" listed above. And professional proofreading, which should come after "professional design/layout," costs lots more than "$250+."

What part of "freelance editor" means "not a real job" to you?! I've been working 7 days a week for quite a few months now. And the only jobs available to my husband around here are part-time ones with Walmart and a grocery-delivery service, both of which he's worked at. You try being a craftsman who's approaching 50, and see how many companies don't jump to hire you!

Are you really an ass, or do you just play one in blog comments?

This very company holds my mortgage in its greedy hands. The spouse and I are trying to negotiate getting our mortgage restructured so that we can afford to keep our home. The spouse's cabinetmaking business took a nosedive when the economy did, so we're trying to survive mostly on my income as a freelance editor. Think that WF is rushing to help us? Nope. They've been dragging their feet through the whole process, which I initiated at the beginning of March.

It's too damn bad that as a sole proprietor, I'm not in a position to hire you for anything. You're a great writer and researcher, and you have the passion to get lots of people involved in whatever causes you take up. If I were a hiring manager, I'd have you on my team in a New York minute!

I'm right there with you, Karoli. The economy does suck. All the wealthy people that my cabinetmaker husband depends on for work are worried about the economy and so are pinching their wallets shut. He's had to take a $9.50/hour job at Walmart--which won't pay for anything but groceries--because no one is hiring here in New York. And I can't support four people on my income as a freelance editor, even though it's a good income. I'm so sorry that you're going through this mess too.

I think that what’s really going on is that the MSM is afraid to speak of the possibility that McCain has Alzheimer’s disease or some other form of senile dementia. Constantly forgetting what one has said previously, being explosively angry with little provocation, and appearing to change one’s opinion constantly are some of the many symptoms of senile dementia.
