If you think that they are not fully American, you have never met a Hispanic teenager.

2) People who criticize illegal immigrants as being mere "lawbreakers" must have never gone a mile over the speed limit in their life. Also, I'm assuming that neither you nor your children had drank a sip of alcohol before age 21. Either that, or you're hypocrites. There are good reasons to have tighter border security, but it's too bad that the stupid ones are often yelled the loudest.

Re: Question of the day

"Public official A" is 'double hearsay from a conman'?? We all lament the reduction and loss of jobs, but how many commenters drive vehicles that are produced by the companies with Ill. assembly plants? Each sale helps the companies. Chicago recently bought a large number of vehicles, but they were not from companies with Ill. assembly plants. Without support, the Ill. assembly plants will close. And before anyone talks about quality, drive one of the new vehicles assembled in Ill.and compare it. Look at the current owner satisfaction surveys and then decide.

2. With its' poisonous business climate, when was the last time that an automobile assembly plant was built in Ill.? The Ill. Workers' Compensation Law by itself would stop a company from locating a new assembly plant in Ill. Add on the other anti-business rules, regulations and laws and not only does Ill. not attract new assembly plants, but we are slowly driving out the plants that are here. I predict that within 10 years, Ill. will have no autobile assembly plants, no jobs, and none of the taxes flowing into the Ill. treasury from those jobs. But then our Governor has told us for months how bad these companies really are. Maybe they are getting the message that Ill. is not a good place to do business.

Re: Billionaire subsidy whacked, explained

Would ex gov. Thompson, as chair of the ISFA, really be the best person to oversee the expenditure of $350 million of taxpayer money on the renovation of Wriggly? Well, maybe so, since he so carefully looked after the shareholders in Hollinger and of course the best interest of the taxpayers in the two hotel deals done during his administration.

Re: This just in… *** IDOT to ignore law ***

Are we really missing an important part of the story???
Up until now, Bill Cellini's company has been able to lease Springfield property to the state at the same rate as a IDOT lease in downtown Chicago. If it were not for the Rezko trial, the state would probably have entered into a new lease at the same or an increased lease cost for this building while there are lots of empty buildings available at lower cost.

Looks like the Rezko trial is already starting to save the taxpayers some money.

Re: Yet another banner day in the Illinois Senate *** UPDATED x2 ***

Just thinking what a waste of money it was to renovate the Senate chambers in a rather lavish manner in an attempt to provide some decorum for that body.

"Decorum, they don't need no stinking decorum!" And truly, they don't need redecorated chambers when members want to act like people in a back yard brawl.

It is so sad that the majority of our Senators are willing to accept and put up with leadership like this. Very very sad.

Re: Way too tiny or a good start?

Using Illinois road funds to leverage federal dollars for road projects. Here is the First Amendment:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof

Respecting an establishment of religion means to favor or promote one religion over another. So the Constitution does also protect us from the state discriminating in favor of a religion. (And, other Amendments have been added to the Constitution so that the First Amendment also applies to the states, thus applying to a religious display in the State Capitol). Therefore, either all must be allowed, or (the much easier to manage) none allowed.

Re: Question of the day

The City's ordinance should be unconstitutional. It is not written properly. It states "while using". What does that mean? If you look at the clock on your phone, that would technically be "using". Government treats everyone like they are children. Stop with all of the asinine laws.

9-40-260 Use of mobile telephones.
(a) Except as provided by subsection (b) of this section, no person shall drive a motor vehicle while using a mobile, cellular, analog wireless or digital telephone.

(b) The provisions of the ordinance shall not apply to:

(1) Law enforcement officers and operators of emergency vehicles, when on duty and acting in their official capabilities*.

(2) Persons using a telephone with a “hands free” device allowing the driver to talk into and listen to the other party without the use of hands.

(3) Persons using a telephone to call 911 telephone numbers or other emergency telephone numbers to contact public safety forces.

(4) Person using a telephone while maintaining a motor vehicle in a stationary parked position, and not in gear.

(c) Any person who violates subsection (a) of this section shall be subject to a fine of $75.00, provided however, that if a violation occurs at the time of a traffic accident, the driver may be subject to an additional fine not to exceed $200.00.
