I appreciate your comments. I may try yoga, but it offends my vanity for some reason. I am easily embarrassed.

in Time for an eBay revolt? | Letter Never Sent on Letter Never Sent
I think there's a real opportunity for competition especially if eBay continues to alienate the sellers. If sellers even start cross-posting auctions to another service buyers will start moving. If I had the money and initiative I would start such a project.
My approach would be to commit to sellers to only take a certain amount of fees and commit to let's say 2 years of not raising fees. That will bring people over. Also, I would court the sellers who sell in-game merchandise and especially high-volume sellers. That will get the auctions. You could offer reduced fees for sellers who are the most successful and make that the cornerstone to your approach.

I agree. I think the Gap sucks mainly because they just suck. Their clothes are overpriced and poorly made. I actually think they screwed up with their strategy of promoting Old Navy. Old Navy sucks even more, but with Old Navy people have no reason to buy the things the Gap was good at, basic clothing items. I want to see a store that sells nice pants and jeans that fit, basic button down shirts that are well-made, and nice classic stuff. I think these stores try too hard to be fashionable and fail miserably.

Good link. In the article, why is it necessary to caricature women who like to shop as slaves who want to wear hamster-hair nose warmers?
I don't know. I don't even really buy into the idea of purchasing or not purchasing items as social action. I just buy what I want to buy. I have a hard time being concerned about people halfway around the globe who have no real, practical relationship to me. What am I responsible for? Do I need to get mobilized every time there is a natural disaster or wide-scale suffering? Is it better to buy socks made my an indonesian women who works 10 hrs a day and uses the salary to buy essentials for her family or to buy more expensive socks made domestically by American workers who use the money to help pay for their cable bill? I dont think many people realize how incredibly privileged we are to even be able to have concern for textile workers in the third world. Who do you think they're most concerne for? Would they be better off without our money flowing in, even if only through their minute salaries?

Oh, I agree that it can operate as a defensive/distancing maneuver. I think that's the flipside of consciously dressing in order to have a particular social strategy.
I think I would make a distinction between generic clothing and a socially neutral costume. When I think of generic clothing, I imagine sweatpants, jeans, t-shirts, white socks, etc.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean in your last paragraph. Are you saying maybe it is a desire to not take a risk as to what other people might perceive due to my clothing choices? Or, that I run the risk of not being remarkable?
I've found in my own personal experience that it has been helpful to me to be visually amorphous in terms of my costume (kinda like a scramble suit) since it allows one to move between different groups by changing other more subtle things. Ah, but does that mean you never really belong? Probably. I have rarely felt like I have belonged anywhere in particular.
In social situations it is helpful to meet people in their own mental territory. The trade off, as I think you've pointed out, is that you run the risk of not standing out, etc. On the other hand, I want to be liked for what is inside rather than what can be superficially understood. I have had many situations where lately where I have learned a lot from people I might have routinely dismissed previously just based on assumptions I made about them visually. So, I guess my attempts to blend in visually functions to put people at ease so that you can have a chance to make more than a superficial impression and so that there is a chance for communion once you get past the surface assumptions. This is muddled, but I have trouble writing in these small boxes.

Maybe, you want to be able to feel like you can wear those things? Or, they represent some ideal representation of how you would like to be seen?
Good point, what if someone fails miserably in communicating their desired identity?
