Qtrax are claiming they will play on the iPod in a couple of months , I have to wonder if they will use DVD Jons DoubleTwist Ventures reverse enginneried DRM .

And from what I'm gathering they hook into Gnuttlea and filter the content on Qtrax .

This model may work and if it doesn't I wonder when the labels will investigate the collective licensing model like that proposed by the EFF.

I think this has more to do with Yahoo not wanting to deal with the hassle of DRM anymore .

Ian Rogers Yahoo Musics General Manager has been a very outspoken critic of DRM in the past and DRM has also eaten into Yahoo Music's operational costs with DRM being the cause of most of Yahoo Music's customer service issues .

Tribler is a Bittorent client but it uses RSS and supernodes to send tracker information ,recommendations ,avatars and allows you to connect to freinds and its open source so half the work has been done for what Dave is talking about .

Arachnid look at Tribler they have Perm IDs ,a reputation system and a social layer running on top of its p2p framework

In this new world of Hybrid P2P CDNs a few servers could be integrated into the DHT just for Bootstrapping and traffic control .

P2P content providers like Joost claim that 70% of all their content comes from Peers so their servers are never really hammered of course the whole system can go offline if something like an authentication server goes down like happened with Skype but if you control a few supernodes on the server end you might be able to avoid this .

As Om Malick points out in his article The Venice Preject cliemt is based on Mozillas XUL platofrom and the Venice devepers will release a API in the near future so any develpers can bulid plugins for the service like they currently do with Firefox or Media players .Consider the TVP client to be a TV browser .

Matt Blame the studios for the silly restrictions on this content .The studios still refuse to offer DivX downloads where they could offer the DivX Burn to rent service and use the DivX new replaces old DRM model to control content .Microsoft DRM is broken and cracked .I dont understand why the Studios execs are still drinking the Microsoft Kool Aid when even Bill gates has come out and said recently that DRM in its current form doesn't work

Netflix had to make a tough decision just so they can be in the Video space.

Also Starz paid the studios US 1 Billion for the exclusive rights to a unlimited movie service till 2012 .So Netflix and others have to come up with other alternatives when it comes to subscriptions .

I think that Movie rental services like CinemaNow and Movielink (both owned by the studios by the way ) have lost rental battle after this salvo from Netflix

The major Studios involvement in the two major download services is just another barrier to sucessfull entry into the online movie market ..

The regional restreictions imposed on Joost are imposed by the content owners and users in North America don't see much geo lock out with the content from Viacom or National Geographic for example but European users do notice this content being restricted .

Joost released 9.4 in the last few days and the jumpy video problems seems to be less of an issue. Hopefully with 9.5 most of those problems will be fixed .

Matt I think you should take a look at Joost again shows can be rewound and fastforwaded by moving the progress indicator on the progress bar on the controller.

As for Joost being cautious I suspect that this time round Joosts founders don't want to settle another Billion dollar lawsuit with the entertainment industry like they did with KaZaa and ended up paying some money out of their own pockets after they sold Skype to Ebay .

Why is Apple so opposed to differential pricing?

Apple is in the business of selling iPods and if you upset the Applecart (sorry) and increase the price of the content hipsters want to buy, the sales of iPods go down .

Also I personally think this is a smart move by NBCU to move away from the monopoly that is iTunes .Also remember that Amazon Unbox also works with TIVO and will probably more open to things like subscriptions and season passes and other types of bundling .eg but the season and get a free rental of this movie .

These days if you put something on the internet or publicly in any form expect it to be ripped ,sliced and diced within hours of it being released with or without your authorization .

My advice to lane would be Watermark all your photo's before you release them publicly and a private Flickr account wont help you .

This is why I suggested that Lane Hartwell watermarks every photot she publishes on the internet then she creates her own attribution system .

Australia's Highest rated Show of Last Year The CHASER comes from the Government funded ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) .

They seem to get by well without advertising and decided not to go to ad supported networks even though they where offered thousands of dollars by the networks .

Chris Joost has to compeate with "piracy" just and offer a product that make acess to content easier to get and more convenient.

At the moment piracy is winning in the convemince and ease of use areas compared to Joost gets to the level of having all content availible globally and easy to find .

At the momnet Joost has most of its content geo restricted becuse international distribution agreements lock up content for years ,the shows are hard to find and not ordered becuse of lack of metadata from content owners .

Bittorent users have created thier own standard when it comes to expianing then the show was aired

I got glimpses of video through the test and the Joost team members said they did gain some valuable information from the test and that was the whole exercise was a about seeing if the service could handle a flash crowd not about the content they where streaming that was just there to keep us watching ;)

I was in the Joost IRC chat (not the channel chat) and the Joost staff said there where a few backend problems that where causing a few issues and the even rebooted the streaming server at one stage .

I think it was a successful test if they found some bugs that they will now probably fix .

Remeber that CBS also is a Investor in Joost and just last week Joost did a public beta test of its live streaming protocol .....even if no one noticed.

That said i think Joost should look at getting onto game consoles via their internet browsers and use th their extensive experience in networking so Joost can be a client that streams video across your home network to your TV.That would also be good for Internet ready TVs

Joosts Next big move is going to have to be on devices that are connected to the TV the move to Flash and standards based streaming is a move in that direction .

Joost is well positioned to make that move being an independent company and HULU is going to struggle with its owners NBC and FOX becuse they have long term contracts and relationships with the Cable and Satellite companies that don't want to see the market for DVRs and scheduled TV programing caniballsed

Joost is meant to be on your PC its a "TV browser" (coined by Joost's CTO Dirk-Willem van Gulik) .

Joost will be a media center app or Set top box client the PC and MAC are just platforms to test the client out ,while we wait for true IPTV for enter the living room .

The Ad insertion is Buggy at the moment

I hope Joos offer what I call less Intrusive (annoying) Ads like Ticker Ads ,Persistent Overlay bugs ,Video Hyperlinks (Microsoft)and just about anything that doesn't interrupt your viewing experience unless you want it to .Video Sites like Bebo already have Graphical Tickers in their clips and so do the Network and Cable channels but a platform like Joost can make them interactive..

So you can have what has been dubbed the "rocking chair experience", either lean forward or lean back .

NewTeeVee also encountered this problem and had to work with Max and his team to pull the sessions in chucks from the stream .

Max said they where working on a solution but it must be harder than it sounds .

The studios and other content owners would prefer that you stream content not download it because. if you have the full movie on a hard drive you can break the encryption .

The 24 hour rental is a old outdated business model and streaming like Netflix does is the future and downloads will only be for users with portable devices who don't have internet access in 2-3 years .

Abode has been holding back its Flash SDK for Devices and the SDK it only Supports Flash 7.This is a major Issue with the Wii and other devices that support Flash .

Joost could petetialy run on phones like Nokia's N95 that does H.264 video and has TV out and it can also stream out all that Joost has to so is create a Symbian client .the phone also supports Open GL for the joost overlays

In the early days when Joost staff members where more accessible ,open and avalible and when they coulkd talk in the Joost IRC channel without it becoming nation news they said that devices and Set top boxes are on the roadmap .

In this Behind the Scenes blog post there is a video from January this year from Henrik Werdelin who is Joosts Chief Creative Officer saying that TV is where they want to be next .

I think their is still good reason to have the client especially when it comes to live and to provide extra options a web based service cant .Think about streaming Joost to a game console or media center extender or TV and to provide support to media center remotes .

I also think that a web based service will be a great addition to Joost but it shouldn't be the only service they provide .

Tom spent two years Smoozing the Hollywood Studio execs ,Joined the right clubs ,rented a fancy car and condo in the Hollywood Hills and now he admits defeat ....

The Internet video boom is in its infancy and when the Disk dies off as a format and broadband speeds go thru the roof (predicted to be 2012) then video sites that rent or sell Hollywood movies will be the future .

User generated content is fun for about 2 minutes .

Professionally created video can be fun for hours .

Movies are protectedon DVD with several content protection measures so theres not much of a chance they will remove protections from online products but they will probably make them interoperable .

The Coral Consortium is working to provide that interoprablity.

The distribution partners could do quite well out of this becuse it will drive traffic to ther destination websites and they will be able to sell the electronic sell through content that will be provided by NewCo probaly at a better revenue share than the Ad supported content .

I'm watching the cricket right now for free via Sopcast a p2p streaming app based in China .This is OK if you don't mind buffering every 10 mins .

Events like the Cricket need to be advertising supported in overseas markets with Geo IP filtering to target the commercials to the locale .

A encrypted P2P stream would save on the bandwdith costs ....

One Interesting Earnings Call will be the DivX who have been under an embargo becuse of thier recent IPO .

The ROO business Solutions Unit was basically Wurld Media who's sale to Roo is now being investigated in a criminal lawsuit so no wonder the new CEO wanted to get rid of that hot potato .

ROO paid 4.5 Million for Wurld Media last year so they have basicly wrote that sale off it seems .Notice there was no mention of Wurld media in this release .

Maybe Joost's content team needs to be actively searching opportunities like LiveStation did with CERN .

Last WEEK 300,000 viewers watched the US Open Tennis Mens Final online on the CBS Sports website that was confined to the US by Geo Restrictions if Joost had carried it they could of broadcast worlwide if they where worried about bandwidth costs or their servers crashing .CBS/Viacom is a Joost investor and content partner

The Issue here is Apple wont license Fairplay but that said other streaming services like Joost work on the Mac (Intel Macs) and they have a DRM scheme .

And if you own a Intel MAC you can always use Bootcamp to run XP ;) or virtualization software .

There was a few Marketing staff let go a few weeks ago from the London office according to Newteevee and Om Malick because the Joost New York office had similar marketing/advertising staff, its well known that the Joost engineering management is relocating to New York becuse thats where ex Comcast and Joost VP of Engeneering Matt Zelesko will be based and the Netherlands development centre is scaling down because they are the also offices of former Joost CTO Dirk William van Gulick and his consultancy asemantics.com who was let go from Joost and know works for the BBC .

If I can find this out all via open source and well known news sources by myself I cant understand why a "Journalist" from the Times cant find this info ,unless some disgruntled former employees of Joost spun him .

I think Joost as a destination platform that supports widgets is a great idea .

Look at the sucess as Facebook as a destination and Face book is in the content business also and the content is entertainment from your social graph.

Joost also needs some sort of social networking if they want to be computer based so they can replicate some the experiences that surround the TV .
