in A Big Week For Wine Discovery (and graft) on Alice Feiring
"Jose Pastor is a dream. A sweetie. A cutie." Boy, did he snow you (I kid, I kid), but the wines, those are indeed truly remarkable.
In CA we are anxiously awaiting the new Tajinaste red and the white too (Listan Blanco, muy tasty).
The Raspay is always a treat for those with old school taste (2002 is gone, 2003 is now current vintage).
Mencía from Ribeira Sacra is a current personal favorite and is easier to find (at least out here in CA) than in the past. The flagship wine from Temera is aged in Acacia and cherrywood barrels and might be more intriguing to a 'traditional' palate.
Did you try the Preto from Tierra de León, made from Prieto Picudo (also an unoaked red -and a pink version too- from cool, green Northern Spain)?
Young Joselito is indeed one of the Spanish importers with integrity to look for (binge drinking at Bern's w/Dr. J notwithstanding). The women in our shop used to call him "el diablo" but that was more about his old habit of wearing black suits & black shirts with a red tie and pointy, black, hard soled shoes than with any judgment of his character, which is impeccable.
Can't wait to try the new stuff coming out in a month or so.

in Wine of the Week - Bodegas Castro Martin on Catavino
Mmmm, Castro Martín. This was the first Albariño that I tried back when there just a few of them here in California. Now the choices are numerous but sadly Castro Martín is not currently among them.
Glad to hear that it is just as tasty as before. Hopefully we'll see it again here some day.

in Sherry to invest €2.8m in marketing sherry to new markets! Will they get it right? on Catavino
If these guys want to spend a ton of money to improve the image of the region and the wines, I'm all for a concerted education effort including lots of on-line elements to spread the word across international borders. As a US retailer, I notice a great deal of hesitation amongst my peers regarding the stocking and selling of Jerez wines. We sell lots of Jerez (it's Javier Hidalgo who says "Don't call it Sherry. Thats what your grandmother drank. call it Jerez."...another good suggestion) in our store because we know it and love it. Retailers who don't already have a taste for the wine will be less inclined to buy and recommend it to their customers.
Also...they could put real effort into standardizing the bottling date info on Manzanilla and Fino so it's easy to find a fresh bottle, and while they're at it, dedicate some of the money to buying back stale Fino, thereby reducing the importers risk, insuring that the wines in the market are pristine and demonstrating that they are serious about improving quality and public perception. This, of course, is a fantasy, so while I'm at it, they could fly a bunch of us over there for a little, ahem, education.
Dream on.
