It's difficult to believe the story that she was somehow tricked by Gainsbourg. Maybe she didn't understand the (no too subtle) lyrics, but certainly her parents and manager did. I think the whole thing was concocted to try and protect her from the negative backlash the song generated. I also think what really derailed her career was ending her relationship with Gainsbourg. This reminds me to move that Gainsbourg biography to the top of my Amazon wishlist.

Google Reader has really grown on me. One feature I love is being able to display my most recent "shared" items in the sidebar of my blog. It's a quick and easy way to keep a running link blog of interesting, but off-topic items.

I still love NetNewsWire, but I find I'm using it less and less.

It seems like many people rushed to write the "first" reviews without spending much time actually using their new iPhones. Dave Winer's complaints are especially silly. When you load a web page, it automatically shrinks to fit the iPhone screen. Yes, this makes the text small. Double-tapping on the section you want to read enlarges it. Double-tapping again shrinks it. Want to really zoom into something? Use the multi-touch finger-spread. Websites on the iPhone look just like websites on your computer (Flash excepted). Makes navigation much easier. IMO this is far superior to the way most phones handle web rendering.

Oops... I forgot about the last contest. I don't think you'll have a problem encouraging entries to this one, but for future contests you may want to set a time limit for entries (say, one week) and then write a short reminder post or two as entry period comes to an end. I had meant to contribute a few 'bad' game ideas to the last contest, but it just slipped my mind.

According to Apple's press release yesterday, rented movies are only compatible with the iPod classic, iPod nano w/video, iPod touch, and iPhone. Sucks for people who still have a perfectly good iPod video.

First off - This is your best tech post in a long while (by no means a dis to your other tech writing).

I've been swimming around the edges of FriendFeed for a while now, but haven't taken the plunge yet. As much as I tried to get into it, Twitter never really turned my crank, so I've been a little dubious of former Twitter evangelists now piling onto FriendFeed. I'm already suffering from account overload, and I think long and hard these days before setting up new ones. That said, “one social Web 2.0 site to rule them all” is mighty appealing.

I may not dive in this weekend, but I might spend a little time in the deep end.

One of my all-time faves. I have a well-worn VHS tape of it which I watched hundreds of times over the 3 years I toured with a circus. The music still brings back the smell of sawdust. I was lucky enough to see it at the Castro in San Francisco when it was re-released a few years back.

If you like Umberllas, you should check out "The Young Girls of Rochefort" (Les Demoiselles de Rochefort). Same composer + same director + same young and beautiful Deneuve + her sister Françoise Dorléac + Gene Kelly = Ooh La La!

On a related note: It looks like Robin Finck is back together with NIN and rehearsing for their upcoming tour. He left NIN a couple years ago to tour with GNR with the expectation that Chinese Democracy would be released at some point during the tour. All the delays must be bitterly disappointing for everyone who has worked on the album.

The problem with delaying an album for so long is that, as an artist, you change over time. The song you recorded three years ago probably doesn't sound so good anymore. So you go back to the studio and re-work it. By the time you're finished with that song, you have ideas for re-working other songs. Then somebody quits the project and you have to re-record their parts. Etc, etc ... Ironically, the long delays only increase the chances of further delays.

If Axl really thinks he needs to release a new album (and I'm not convinced he does) he should just scrap Chinese Democracy and record something entirely new. Pop music, like all art, is a snapshot in time... not a long, winding journey.

The hardest part of creating something new is knowing when to stop.

There's so much absolute dreck on the Netflix "watch now" list that I wonder if it's more of a challenge to find the *good* movies among the garbage.

That said, one title stands out that's both ridiculous and sublime: "Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte." Obviously not the worst "watch now" movie on Netflix, but a great movie that gets much of its greatness from its badness. Enjoy.
