in Be wary of the Handshake. on The Fire and Motion Blog for Entrepreneurs
Great information, though I do sometimes wonder what it would have been like to live in a time where your handshake was your word, and you'd try to move the world to keep from breaking it.

in what if saving was stupid on brip blap
Personally I'd rather invest my cash back into my business than save it, pay extra on my mortgage, or stick it on the stock market any day. I think the only folks who are going to survive and thrive if there is an economic crash are those who create or buy assets they can continue to profit from no matter what the monetary system looks like (real estate, business, intellectual property, etc.).

Regarding the pay-off-the-mortgage-quicker scenario... If you believe inflation, or even hyperinflation, is the future, then all your debts will be paid off for you as the dollar is worth less and less anyway, so if your home loan is at a good rate, what's the hurry? Plow some money into building up your alternative income wealth streams :)

in Monetize Your Blog By Directly Approaching Advertisers on How To Make My Blog
When do you know it's time... when people start coming to you. :)

If you need money *now*, you can certainly approach people directly or check out the interest on webmaster forums (the Digital Point Forums has a section just for buying and selling links), but I think you really know it's time when that first person approaches you about buying a link, something they'll feel more comfortable doing if you have indeed set up a page with advertising information!

in Get inspiration from blog comments when writing your next post on How To Make My Blog
Great point. Often what we think is the most important thing we can write about (because we care about it most or we think everyone needs to know about it) isn't very popular. Then something that we almost didn't post or weren't that excited about ourselves turns out to really strike a cord with people.

In addition to checking comments, check your traffic stats. You'll probably find that a few of your articles account for a lot of your traffic. It makes sense to mine that popularity and expand on those topics. :)

Marko Saric Thanks for your comments!

@Lindsay: I agree with traffic stats comment. If something works very well for you, expand on it and try to build a whole series of articles on that theme.

in How to get your guest post featured at biggest blogs on How To Make My Blog
Congratulations on getting your guest post accepted to Problogger, and good idea to make a how-to article out of the process. That plug-in, in particular, looks like a good idea. How many RSS readers were you able to add to your site as a result from having your article featured?

Marko Saric @Lindsay: thanks for the comment! I am in process of writing the article on the effect on my traffic/rss so stay tuned for that.

in what desperation looks like on brip blap
"What all of these people fail to realize is that the instability they feel in uncertain times like these arises from their own lifestyle, and not from the government or the corporations or 'the economy.'"

Well, I do believe the deck is stacked against us. And I say that as someone who is financially well off and makes a living from her websites (aka multiple streams of income). :)

If you haven't seen Chris Martenson's Crash Course, it is well worth the time it takes to watch. There's a reason it's harder to make ends meet today (and this will just get worse in the future), and it does indeed have a lot to do with the government and the banking system.

in Its All About the Luv….Comment Luv and Keyword Luv on The Get Smart Blog
This is a nice plug-in.

I am one of the folks who tends to delete comments left by people who sign with their keywords, but using a name and keywords seems less spammy to me.

I'll have to consider trying out KeywordLuv on one of my blogs to see how it goes.

in Make your blog content scannable and sticky on How To Make My Blog
I think it's important to consider your audience too. There are certainly examples of blogs with loooooong posts that aren't particularly scannable that do extremely well. (Steve Pavlina comes to mind.)

For my home and garden blog, most of my posts use short paragraphs and are under 200 words total, but for my writing blog (where I'm writing for readers/writers), I'll often hit 1,000 words (still short by Pavlina standards, heh heh).

Marko Saric @Lindsay, thats a great point, thanks for your comment!

Usability wise and considering a brand new visitor to your blog, posts should be kept in as low word count as possible.

But of course, all depending on the target audience and the article theme, the word count can be much higher than the 300 suggested in my article.

Great blog you run!

in An Online Advertising Guide on How To Split An Atom
Very good overview. Adsense is my favorite, because it's a big earner for me, and it's easy to implement (no customer service, thank you very much), but I know there is a lot of potential with direct sales and get requests all the time, so it's definitely time to bite the bullet and ad that as an option. I am working on a way of automating it as much as possible. ;)

in Blogging For Six Figures? Writers Take Note! on Copywriter Ray Edwards
Good interview. I always enjoy listening to Yaro speak.

I'm one of those Adsense bloggers, and though I make six figures from the program, I keep thinking I should spend time developing my own products. I have an aversion to selling anything myself, but should probably consider it to take my sites to the next step. I appreciated Yaro's information on building a real business around one's blog.

P.S. I'm from the PNW too, Ray, and lived in Spokane for a couple years. ;)

Great post! I know a lot of people are making good money by exploiting Yahoo Answers too (it's a good way to see what questions people ask over and over again).

in the truth about passive income on brip blap
Rich Dad, Poor Dad is making its author a buttload of passive income. ;)

I make a living from my blogs and websites working about an hour a day. It's not entirely passive income (though I do have sites I haven't touched in a year or more and that still bring in money every month), but it's as close to my dream job as I've gotten.

That's what passive income is for most people. There are ways to build assets, whether through writing content (books, websites, etc.) or buying real estate, but it's hard for anything to be entirely hands off. And who would want it to be? Being retired would be boring in the extreme. ;)

Good luck to you!

I make a nice living from my blogs and websites, so I know it's possible. :) The nice thing about liking to write is there are so many ways to turn that passion into assets that create passive income.

in To-Do Lists and Pizza Timers: My Time Management Method on Pajama Professional
There are quite a few free break reminder programs out there that could be used by those who wince at the idea of buzzing pizza timers. ;) I started using one when I was having trouble with repetitive stress injuries and needed to remind myself to get up and stretch and wiggle my hands around every 15 minutes or so.

in Is Your Relationship with Money on the Brink of Divorce? on Billionaire Woman
Whew, lots here to ponder.

Thanks to my profitable websites and blogs, I'm pretty well off, and I don't have a husband, so I'll take a pass on responding there, but I definitely agree that how you treat money affects how much you have and your relationship with it.

So many people see money as a necessary evil and something that's in restricted supply, but if you see it as something that's abundant and can come from many sources, then it's stops being so elusive.

One of the big things I've learned along the way is that a lot of us think we want a ton of money when what we really want is the freedom to go where we please when we please. That can be obtained without being a billionaire, or even a millionaire. :)

Excellent blog post.

Though Seth Godin's books are aimed at marketers and companies with products, your readers might find them worth picking up too. (This post reminded me of a lot of what he writes about.)

A nice post. I really need to explore more of the Google options. I hadn't thought about how they'd make accessing things from anywhere in the world easier. Of course, I've usually got my laptop with me when I'm traveling and have most anything I need, but still. ;)
