Easily.

Teaching requires a great deal more work than showing up and teaching a couple classes for 50 minutes. Each 50 minute class requires about 1 hour of lesson planning, running to Kinkos to copy assignments, then up to another hour following the class to grade papers. If you have 5 classes per day that's 12.5 hours per day for a 5 class day, assuming you don't have 5 identical classes. In addition to that you must spend one period supervising lunch during the workday. So, she leaves at 6:30 AM, gets home at 5:00, eats dinner, then grades 5 classes worth of papers until 10PM, then does it again the next day. On top of that she also has to squeeze in parent-teacher conferences, assisting with school events, etc... etc... I would never do that job. She makes 40k a year in the Philly job market, you can work at a carpet store for that income.

You want schools to be better? Kick out the bad kids. Have a 3 strikes and you are out rule. The job is already hard enough without the jerks. Throw in a couple bad kids in a class and you have no shot. Then on top of that the government and parents blame the teachers.

What a thankless job, we are lucky anyone teaches at all.

Re: Stupid in America

Most foreign countries do not guarantee an education for all citizens, so their schools are filled with the best and brightest, no special education, no low income, no kids from bad upbringings. Our schools have children of all different intelligence levels and backgrounds. You can't compare the US school system with that of other countries. If you were to take all kids in a specific age group from the US and one of those other countries, the US kids will likely be more educated because they will ALL have been educated to some level, versus just a percentage of that same demographic in another country.

Re: Obama, You’re Disappointing Me a Bit

or...as many of us already know...he's an empty suit. It's not like any of the stuff he's dealing with is a surprise. All these issues (other then the self imposed AIG bonuses) were known to be issues during his campaign. I for one think he got a bad deal on the AIG bonuses...some of those people worked on a $1 salary schedule for the past year. I believe they should have gotten something but not the whole sum. Anyhow, this is the problem with a two party system and the reason we need more choices. People feel they are wasting their vote if they don't vote for a Republican or a Democrat. We need to get past that before we can stop the partisan politics, elect some people to represent the public and not the party and get things done. Anyone that really thought he was going to change anything other then the regular pendulum swing back to the left was a fool.

Re: WARNING: AMC theaters are running FAKE IMAX's and charging $5 extra for a slightly bigger screen. The number of people who use it on a daily basis is a fraction compared to Facebook. I've made far more business connections and contacts through Facebook than I have through LI due to the sheer number of people who are on FB. In fact, I've sat here thinking for 5 minutes and can only come up with four people in my life who aren't on FB.

Furthermore, easily half of the number of friends/family I keep in regular contact with is via Facebook. Phone calls are too time consuming, email can be a chore, but Facebook is the perfect equilibrium. It may not be a mission critical utility, but it sure as heck makes this 28-year-olds life much more connected and easier.

Re: Salem homeowners work to restore trashed house

I am leaving this comment not to start debate about the Bell's or the landlord. I am leaving this comment to point out that the ET is a very questionable source of information these days. I also wanted to give my perspective, as a neighbor, and as a parent of one of the Bell children's friends. I am sure this will spark debate and a whole bunch of single minded retort. I do have to write this though, as I feel this family has been taken advantage of and dragged through the mud by various people involved with this whole situation.

I know for fact that the owners were not the ones who removed the alleged "3000lbs" of garbage from the house. I witnessed the Bell's during the whole month of July, into mid August, when they were forced to leave, working diligently to rectify the situation. They cleaned the flooded basement, removed the mold, moved out their belongings and attempted to make right this horrible circumstance. I even offered to help but was refused, politely I may add. I also know that Mr. Bell lost his jobs due to the publicity of this whole situation. The jobs he was working 80 hours per week that was probably a big cause for this whole mess. Yes, I do have first hand knowledge as I was a resident of this area during this time and my child was a friend of one of their children. I would not classify myself as a close friend of the Bell parents, but I did have chance to speak with them over the course of the two years they occupied that home.

From what I understood, the Bell's were in an option to buy situation and that they had thousands of dollars locked into buying this property. With all of the media attention, the owner forced the sale and they could not purchase. They had to leave losing a lot of money. Now the owners are renting again and the Bell's have to pay for the renovations. Renovations that the Bell's wanted to perform and /or pay for themselves, in July, but were refused to by the owner. Why hasn't this been reported in the ET? Why would the owner refuse a tenant from fixing a problem immediately? This sounds like people who were trying to take responsibility for a problem they caused and were refused. I guess that wouldn't make good press would it? To be fair, I do understand the owners not wanting these people as tenants after this. But were they tenants or buyers? Interesting thought, huh?

I had occasion to witness Mr. & Mrs. Bell being friendly neighbors who were involved with their children. I do not know the dysfunction that caused that awful mess they lived in when the police intervened, but I can honestly say that whatever was going on was something that we all were not aware of. Had we had knowledge of their issues, we would have informed the authorities to help them. I actually had chance to visit this house back in May. It may have lacked some interior decoration, but it was nothing like those pictures published in the news. No garbage or kicked in doors. I even toured the house when they were getting it fixed and it was not filled with garbage and the doors were not kicked in. This was in July. It was a house that needed new carpets, some paint and some serious cosmetic repair. Where is the ET getting their information? I really am at a loss to understand. These people, in my opinion, are not what you would classify as monsters and God only knows what went on in their lives to let things come to that. Think about it. Who would pay $2000 dollars per month, on time every month according to this article, to live in a mess? Something happened in their lives to cause this and luckily the authorities got involved before something really bad happened.

Those children appeared happy, vibrant little people who attended public school. They never appeared to be without, never dirty or reflecting attire that represented their "trashed house." They attended summer day camp with my child up until July.
They rode their bicycles all the time in the neighborhood and were always happy little people whenever I saw them. The last I heard, these children were with family members and are still the healthy little people I remember them as. I will miss seeing them enjoying themselves in our neighborhood. My child misses them as well.

It is a shame to read what I have over the past couple months when I know what I witnessed, and what I have first hand knowedge of. I am not condoning what happened to these children in the least. But I do feel that these parents are not the monsters everyone is making them out to be. Something obviously broke down in their lives to let a house get that way. I do have the advantage of knowing these people somewhat to
measure what is being reported about them. I personally thought they were nice people and I really wish I could have helped them avoid this.

The ET is a very questionable source of information and it really bugged me that they are still lying about this family to sell news. I hope our society can recognize the ET is a very biased publication, with intentions to sell papers, not the truth, first and foremost. I hope that this has not damaged the Bell's chance to have a fair shake in court. This family needs help, not persecution.

To the Bell family - You must know who we are and we want you to know we do not think you are evil monsters. Please get the help you need and get your children back. They love you and WE KNOW you love them. God bless.

Re: http://www.webomatica.com/wordpress/2008/08/16/webomatica-contest-5-so-bad-theyre-good-movies-netflix-version/

Dark Star: http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Dark_Star/17077975...

Re: Selectmen pursue cop's retirement

Right on! Where you had limited batting zone options (low and away, middle of the plate, up and away, up and in, etc, etc), where the hitting stats or the player prefs determined the results.

Otherwise, you have the difficult or potentially silly model where you just "shrink" the sweet spot zone of the players based on stats, and human player gets to completely control the quality of the hit. While it sounds good in theory it always leads to bad statistical hitters hitting .500 when run by a good human player. Developers tweaks to avoid that seemed to have revolved around making the hitting motion far more difficult, but that just shrinks the number of people hitting .500 with the .240 hitter..the model still breaks down at some point.

The games I liked the best in regards to batting would let people with basic skill in batting "do the job" to simulate a real game, and let luck and just making good contact drive the results (much like real baseball). As of the last time I played baseball video games I found the latter model taking over and I didn't care for it much..it stops resembling baseball at all.

Re: Crust Gets in Your Eyes - philadelphia weekly online

Let's just marginalize another group of people we don't know and consider ourselves worldly. And 90% of the time those players have no role left to play in MLS. The "focus on quality" idea is nonsense. A handful of international players in USL are probably passed over by MLS as "equivalent" to US role players and sometimes "not worth an international roster spot". And rightfully so as MLS has some duty to give homegrown players a chance to develop.

I'm not sure 4th place in Copa America is that much better a result than the QF in WC 2002? I have little doubt the first choice squad of our national team would be just as good if not better without a MLS existing. But I'd argue the depth (players 18-50 in the national team pool) would be worse off. Anyways, that's fairly irrelevant as to whether we should have a solidly pro league here. Like it or not, MLS is not going away. So you're better off clamoring for change from within that worrying about it being around. And I fail to see how USL offers much of a talking point in this discussion. Within a few years the stable USL teams will be in MLS and it'll have few markets of much note remaining (Rochester, Charleston, etc).

Re: Different Night, Same Story: USL Triumphs, MLS Fails

I have watched the weekly USL game on FSC for 3 years. Plus the occasional US Open Cup games that they stream for free.

Please show me some proof that salaries are so high in USL. I'd guess it's rare for a player to make over 50k/yr. Maybe a few per team, sometimes playing indoor too (though that'll be harder now with MISL fracturing). The top 16 players on most every MLS team make more than 50k/yr. The last couple on the 18 man senior roster are young players making the minimum. They're probably no better or worse than solid USL players. Most within a few years become USL regulars. My 99% figure is speaking towards USL player becoming regular players for MLS teams. Like Velez & Mendes. It happens from time to time with central defenders and goalkeepers (who develop later) but it's rather are nowadays with attackers (Alan Gordon, Brian Jordan, etc). Please don't give me examples over 5 years old. I'll give credit to USL in increasing its professionalization the last couple years but for a while it was sending very few to MLS.

Let's look at the Puerto Rico roster. I don't see many players that gave up playing time in MLS to go to USL. Gaudette, Jones, Miranda, Hansen, Noel, Gbandi, Elcock, Yomby, Behonick , Telesford- pretty sure all were cut from MLS in recent years. "MLS reject" is harsh, but fair. Some were probably cut because they took up international spots. Villegas was at times ok in MLS but is now 32 and wasn't that missed. Delgado was drafted, can't remember if he came to camp? Krause was undrafted. The rest are mostly low-profile international players - Atieno, Steele, Jagdeosingh, Marcelin, Henry. Few are in their prime age. They might make it in MLS, but MLS isn't heartbroken that they're playing in USL first. I'll stand by my claim that the vast majority of players that make their way into USL weren't "wanted" by MLS. As in thought to be useful as part of the 16-man core of the team. And I'll stand by my claim that 90% of the time MLS is right, they wouldn't ever make that 16-man core. I didn't say 99% of USL players can't play in MLS. Just that they weren't wanted by MLS. And the vast majority of the time MLS was right. They weren't going to stick around and be core players.

The depth in MLS is much better now than compared to 1998. The end of those rosters back then was pretty bad. MLS hasn't recently had the same class of international players as in 96-98 and expansion has pushed the limit of MLS depth, but the league has made many strides compared to that 12 team league in 98 that was a setup for economic collapse.

Re: MLS Ranks Shockingly Low in IFFHS Study

Kartik, how many times have you seen lower level Costa Rican teams play?

Better or not, the Central American leagues (outside of Saprissa) are much more feeders to MLS than vice versa.

Anyways, I'm just going to have to deal with crying myself to sleep over how the leagues in Finland, Angola, Latvia, and China are superior to MLS.

Re: News and Notes

Kirk is on trial i n Seattle.

It's pretty common for young MLS players to train/"trial" in Europe during the long winter break. You picked the entire state? If you mean Disney World, say Disney World.

"When you take a tour to India, you should visit the golden temple."

That's something a child would write. And it is false.

The Harmandir Sahib (or Darbar Sahib) is in Amritsar, and it is one of the most uncomfortable places in the world to visit.

Much like the Taj Mahal (in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, incidentally...not that you'd be able to tell by reading this page), as one approaches the site, one is constantly hounded by half-naked, starving children pointing to their mouths and saying "hungry, hungry" over and over again.

If you start handing out money, no matter how much you've brought, you won't have a single rupee left inside of ten seconds -- and you won't have dented in the least this hideous flood of human suffering. (If you don't start handing out money, by the way, you're a cold-hearted bastard.)

No tourist could possibly enjoy visiting either place.

Re: Moving Beyond Environmental Veganism

I'm sorry but your very premise is ridiculous. Maybe the guy who conied the term in 70 years ago had one thing in mind, but the term has come to mean something else. It is a definition of a diet, not a life style. I'm a vegan, and I do it for the environment. Let me ask you a question, would you refuse modern medical treatment because it was tested on animals? I hope you never need surgery, because guess what, EVERYTHING was testing on animals. We have to be rational about this. You can't just pick and choose. Are you going to start refusing medical treatment? My guess is no. So please, stop with the "there is only one way!" BS. I know you said it many times, that it's good people are doing this, but then you do the whole my-way-is-the-right-way bit, which is of course ridiculous. I think there are farmers who love their animals and decide to eat them when they die. I think there are scientists who have the utmost respect for the animals they test medication on, knowing it might save a humans life some day. You don't get to define what love is or how people act on it. This was pretty short sighted in my opinion.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Rep. But if you look at our current situation (economically speaking) I'd say government involvement is the beginning of the end.

I have to admit, when I first saw this post, I was pretty stoked. I thought the same thing that most people did: "Finally, we have some 'real' support!"

But then I got to thinking (oops!): I'd love to think that Eric Massa (and every other politician who is looking to get re-elected-which would be....uh...all of them) is doing this out of the goodness of his heart, but I have a really hard time believing that. Then again, I'm a cynical guy ;).

But there's hope: The system is working. TWC is trying to pull some BS and we, the people, are doing something about it. Go team customer!

However, the government is not your parents. That being said, I think that it's time for the American public to stop treating them like a rich kid treats his dad. We shouldn't suckle at the teet of some corporation, and we certainly shouldn't do the same for an institution with even less competition. We're adults. Let's start acting like it.

The only thing more scary to me than bandwidth caps is a precedent that makes us feel alright about the government messing around with something as powerful as the Internet.

Re: Good Friday

Something kind of scary/bizarre occurred to me recently... How is it possible that one of the largest Cable/Internet providers in our country can expect to "pull one over" on so many people? Can a company with enough expertise in communications to gain such a giant customer base really think that they can change their service plan so drastically without an enormous public outcry? A character that till yesteday worked perfectly.

Japanese Spiderman and its giant robot should give a nice lesson about the devastating power of breaking rules, specially when it is in bad hands.

Re: NEXT

Don't agree with the low score...

Re: The reader who sent this in says, “Birthday Cake... - STFU, Parents

it seems to me that the status update was from the Dad who was forgotten by Super Mom.

Re: Dark Lamb

let's have a once a week stand

Re: D.C. Wait a minute. I mean, we all know about this crime. This was 2 firefighters. Lemme ask YOU this. Did YOU CATCH THE PART that explicitly says where Commissioner Grim said that the Fire Departments of Upper Macungie Township (Trexlertown, Fogelsville, Station 56) are getting the black eye now??? AND IT SHOULDNT BE THAT WAY!!? Being a firefighter from one of these stations, myself, I would like to ask you why you now think that your idea of "firefighters were those good ole’ boys" is blown??? JUST BECAUSE 2 FIREFIGHTERS WERE IDIOTS!? OH SO THAT OBVIOUSLY MEANS THAT WE NEED TO SHUN EVERY ONE OF THEM NOW!?!?!?!?!?!

WHERE THE FUCK DID YOU GET THAT LOGIC FROM?!

Hey, buddy, how about you try and become one of the us who's busy bustin his ass trying to pull people out of burning buildings before you go and start dissing us like that. I know your probably sittin on your couch with your nice expensive laptop writing this post, but lemme tell you somethin....just cause 2 firefighters were dumbasses doesn't mean the rest of us are.

That's all I got to say.

Watch what you say before you speak.
