These are (and will constantly be) issues that will come up whenever you've got people who are doing big things for God and who are, as a result, attracting many people as well.

The "consumer" church, as you so put it, is an interesting topic of conversation. The question that you pose, whether or not the congregation is learning how to live lives of worship through louie, chris, etc, can be taken from a number of different angles. Let me point out one such angle (or pose a counter thought to you)!

Who is ultimately responsible for worship? Is it chris? Is it Louie? Is it the Holy Spirit? What part do we have to play, so to speak? I think the answer to that question is key to forming a baseline and foundation upon what worship is really about.

In addition, does chris/louie perpetuate, as you have said, the growth of royal priesthood or continual church-hopping (you said "movement", I interpret it as the so-called "hopper")? I would argue both, just as people goto any other church for a number of reasons (both good and bad... but the point is that they are not, necessarily, the one's to be held ultimately responsible... only to the message that they preach and their own motivations!).

So, if that's the case, then the question is really about their motivation. If it's the former (royal priesthood), then we're all good. If it's the latter (church hopping), then we're in dangerous territory. Are they to blame because of other's motivations and despite their own good intent?

The result of their ministry has been wide spread, and people's opinions of it have also "spread" the gamut of criticism to adoration. But from the way I see it, knowing that Louie and Chris are spirit-filled, god-lead individuals who have time and time again passionately declared their motivation to be nothing more than spreading the good news of the Gospel and for Christ's Name, Work, and Fame to be glorified among all men (and college-aged people) I have complete confidence in God to do amazing things (because they are but His vehicles). And if they do happen to step out of line, I know that they have mentors, fellow brothers, staff, and elders that will let them know what's going on.

But nonetheless, it's a contant struggle for all of us and you bring to light a great point and challenge. We, who are more mature in Christ, must seek to encourage and teach and disciple (and rebuke perhaps at times) those that are more young in the faith.

Thanks for the comments Scott!

John

Re: id 10 t

@chris g: thanks doooood!

Re: Chris Tomlin leaving Austin Stone!!!

Thanks Pete for the prayers. I'm totally for it!

But, a christian venture capital firm would have values and a greater understanding of our missional calling to proclaim the gospel than any secular venture capital firm (generally speaking). This could, in many respects, make or break the deal, because the bottom line of any business for the Kingdom is expansion of it through the Gospel... and that's not typically the bottom line for other businesses... money is the common motivator here.

In addition, a evangelical firm would also provide spiritual guidance, something money can't buy and certainly not something that a typical firm would even offer.

Again, i'm all for the business to seek financial aid, support, and backing from the more "typical" avenues... but wouldn't it be nice to have a definitive evangelical entrepreneurial source?

just a thought.

Re: Christian Venture Startup Group

@Scott

I couldn't disagree more with your first point here. Survival for the .com and startup has become super super easy and an online business's overhead has shrunk to mere microscopic levels. Having started a few of my own, I know that the cost of servers and bandwidth, along with the right technology in place, can create a business that is low cost, highly effective, and requires little oversight.

Secondly, how can you say that if it's going to "truly spread the Gospel" that it HAS to have wide appeal and broad appeal? Certainly we want to do the "most damage" possible, but sometimes spreading the Gospel means sharing it with a neighbor (or digital one perhaps). I think this is a limited view of our call to be missional.

And guitar praise? I'm sure it's making a "positive" change in someone's life... it may not touch millions, but perhaps a few is all that God wanted with it.

In regards to spiritual guidance, that may not be something that you look for from investors, but I think it's something that many would want. Again, in the typical scenario, it doesn't exist.

I am in agreement that for a board of a business or non-profit, one has to be careful and wise about who they choose to help manage, guide, and lead. In your particular instance for the non-profit where you serve, if it's anything about the Gospel I'd be surprised that faith wasn't a factor. If the non-profit isn't about Jesus Christ, then certainly, faith isn't a necessary element.

I'm not suggesting the "throwing money at Christians" model at all. That would be foolish and certainly a waste of time for everyone. I'd expect them to be just as disciplined, wise, and discerning as secular groups.

Finally, i think the 12 disciples were once a "huddle" group... but maybe that's just semantics.

=)

Thanks for the conversation! love it!

Re: Church 2.0 / 3.0 / 0.5?

sweet! keep us posted. love to hear about it.

Re: Christian Venture Startup Group

SWEET! This is a great article and read. Thanks for that! I think this highlights (among a number of things) that there is even a greater need for evangelical technological engagement on the web-o-sphere... because that's where we're all hanging out.

1. Culture is using tech to communicate nearly everything these days. Throw me an example and I'll show you a site.
2. Carefully, but also at the same time "dangerously". A good mix, I'd say.
3. a decade, or more. ... well, i've always said that (because I've heard that in some great research) but perhaps it's catching up slowly... ... nah. a decade.

Re: if your ministry is chasing MTV you’re 5 years too slow…

Oh, and btw, QuietTime.tv is coming very soon.

We need just as much wisdom and guidance by the Holy Spirit as we need the passion and fire and burn of being "entrepreneurial" in our online endeavors.
