in Ricky ‘Rip-off’ Gervais? on Ben.geek.nz
The strangest thing about the whole shebang is that until yesterday, I had never ever heard of the Ricky Gervais Podcast. Then, a mate played it at work; I was sent some semi-spam advertising it; I read about them wanting to charge for it, on Slashdot; then I read about it again here. Ignorant bliss to four times in a day... damn intertron. Bring back the fax!

Stu, as a longtime Apple fanboy with koolaid where my blood should be, I believe what you meant to say was "I want a Porsche that uses Toyota parts..." -- which would be lovely, yes. I do love the machines, from the packaging to the way they (mostly) work, but YES it bugs me when I go to one of the electronics malls over here (Singapore) and walk past 30-40 PC stores before finding the Apple store. And then walk straight back out after being offered a 40gb drive (to replace the one in our iBook that went "graunch" after 13 months, grrrr) for MORE THAN THREE TIMES the price of the IDENTICALLY SPEC'D item I eventually bought two stores away. And they wanted to charge $220 to fit it, too. Ah well - the cost of style, elegance, and software reliability (I restarted Vanessa's iBook the other day for a laugh; first time in ~6 months...). And... Apple... please... can we have a smaller, lighter Albook? Please? See Sony / Toshiba / Panasonic / Sharp / Fujitsu for ideas?

in On Markets and Pricing on Ben.geek.nz
It's been a while since someone brought this up, even though it's been happening forever, and if it takes the intertron to open some eyes, then good. When I worked in retail bike shops in Auckland, back in the day (let's say early the 90's), I could actually get parts BY MAIL from the US, pay full retail, and land them for 20% less than my STAFF DISCOUNT ON WHOLESALE from the local importer / distributor... Crazy stuff. We didn't order the stuff often because return policies were horrendous. You can STILL get the same deal, but now at least you can (mostly) track what's going on and get up-to-date ratings on sellers and all. But it's a bit crazy when you can compare prices in seconds on, say, G4 Powerbooks - try checking Singapore vs San Francisco vs Auckland Apple Store Online - and see a USD200 difference, when shipping will NEVER account for that. Rise up!

Ben, that tick-tick-ticking is actually coming from a nearby timebomb known as your wife, who is (a) wondering how long before she has to have you committed, and (b) thinking of a way to make sure you have to re-arrange the sentence "a barely functioning girlfriend’s PC (the PC was barely functioning, not the gf)" in the near future...

PS: Once you've dampened your hard drive, insulated the case, and all that, and can finally actually hear individual electrons running along inside the cables, THEN what will you do? Eh? Eh? Well?

Dude... you should read what you just wrote. Seriously, bro, am I going to have to fly back to NZ and kick your geeky ass outside for some fresh air, or openmedicinecabnt or something?

(Actually secretly I enjoy geekspeak... you wait till i've been in this job another month or so and am fluent in webappflashmetatagalog - I'll have ya!)
