Wise the hell up BLACK PEOPLE! Sure Obama has a white mother but the media did a paper bag test and decided it was O.K. to treat Obama like a NEGRO and that's why he had to leave his church.

Its guilt by association by any means and, assuming that you are all raised in the U.S., you should've known that. Yes he had to leave his church. He's running a national campaign and with the unusually high attention he attracts anything would be used against him to write a narrative that says "he's TOO BLACK and therefore you can't trust him."

His church didn't exactly help on that front either. They understood that he had a real shot at winning and went out of their way to show out. Hell Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, two people who know how to draw a crowd and a camera, had enough sense to stay quiet because they understood that they if raised a hint of full fledged support it would only be used to damage Senator Obama's chance to become President Obama.

As usual you can now count on black people to consider going against thier interests and decrease support due to him making a hard decision that helps Obama's viability in the fall. Yet black people normally allow white candidates for office disregard them at every waking moment and how do they pay them back for such disrespect? With a vote and a smile.

Re: Clinton Supporter Gets Her Ferraro On After The Rules Meeting

I had to watch the vid about 10 times but could not stop laughing! Quality asked for raising the bitrate, so we switched to 128kbps. After some time, we wanted to introduce chapters and illustrations because that's so much more of -interaction- and -communication- with the audience. Most of all , the AAC format offers more quality at the same bitrate! Tons of e-mail came in from people being thrilled with the AAC format, giving Spacemusic the option using chapters and pics. Now, don't get us wrong, we even switched from AAC back to MP3 again for a while at the end of 2005. Not everyone was ready for AAC yet. COuple of episodes later we announced to switch to AAC for sure starting in 2006 and we did. It was a big succes and 98% of our listeners still are very excited with the format nowadays.

Now, as far as we know OGG format (?...) doesn't bring any opportunity to include chapters and graphics? You know, we don't even know how to spell it correctly, Ogg Vorbis that is. We don't believe in Ogg to be kind of a Wold-standard in audio compressing. Mp3 and Mp4 really are better known and integrated / compatible with almost every system on this planet. Therefore, chances are kind of -zero- we'll offer another format like Ogg. This is definately not on our wishlist right now. Hope this clears things up. And forgive us here, but what the heck does it matter " now that people are paying for a show " that we should introduce another format?! What's the logic Todd? Really, do you get an extra bottle of wine at the market when you buy one bottle because this market has their slogan " people must be thirsty - we always give them 2 bottles for the price of one " Must be your imagination we guess...

cheers,
TC

Re: The ultimate coming of age movie list

Thanks for your list skykid.

What is your TOP 10 coa movies?

Re: The ultimate coming of age movie list

I'm waiting your post, hope you make it soon.

btw, December Boys (2007) not in the list.
http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0465436/

Congrat for the new blog :)

Re: Aston Villa : All PS3 Themes

Villa are cack! In fact it should be shut down to motorists (local traffic only) on weekends between 6-11am.

In the interim, there should also be police motorcycles patrolling beach road during these hours to deter all those hooligans who enjoy hanging out car windows and shouting profanities at peaceful bunches. And YES, they should also book any cyclists who go through red lights and hit people... it seems only fair.

Magda, you are a funny woman and some may even find you likeable, nevertheless I suspect most women in your state would be more than glad to look at our chiselled glutes in lycra... perhaps it's the classic frustration of being able to see something but not touch? I had it too while looking at pictures of my bicycle while overseas... I understand.

I think a session on Kew Bvd and meeting Michael in person would prove adequate to reshape Magda's distorted views.

Re: Ah-Ha

this sounds VERY impressive to me...i mentor in my other (REAL) life outside of my 9-5 and work with young people to create workshops that they will in turn present to their peers...well long story short, i have the hardest time getting them to read and comprehend...reading comprehension is so very very hard for them...so for your students to GET IT-BRAVO!!!!!

first time here and i love it!

Re: we bringing sexyback

i am glad that i came across your blog...he and i have been having a rough road here lately too...so to read something like this is encouragign especially with him having to be away for long periods of time working...maybe we can read this book and the follow up together...it seems like it would be really helpful

Re: for me?

i am glad that you bought something for YOU...women for years, mothers and wives put themselves last...
its alright from time to time to take care of our needs and wants too...

(says the woman who has YET to buy her own ipod but will everyone else gifts, neccesities...HA!) but one day

Re: wait a minute

definitely LOVE Estelle! she rocks! i also love emily king...and maybe take it back to the old days, Maze ft. The rest of the houses highlighted above (Valley, 1st, 36th & 12th) are a very poor cross section of homes. For those who don't have business cards, other good uses are store discount/frequent buyer cards, lipstick & mirror, or a deck of cards.

Also, if you make the case a little bigger, it would be great to hold tampons. I'm not a fan of having my tampons roll out of my purse, and I was even MORE embarrassed when I was a teenager. Not sure how you would present that in the class, especially if there are boys present!

Re: Double your workout

Gotta go with Thunderstruck by ACDC..

Re: The Man Behind 50 Cent’s Social Media Empire

Said “sex tape”

http://www.zshare.net/video/610978035c0d5c11/%3Cbr%20/%3E

This comment was originally posted on The Smoking Section

Re: Be A Nigger Too?

the word was used as i was coming up that and koon...but i decided not to use the word at all...i like the song and video if for no other reason than it totally MAKES you look at the word, exame it and see how, when, why you use it...i too need to read Dick Gregory's "Nigger" again...

Re: Treehouse by Tham & Videgard Hansson is Almost Invisible

Cool idea. Let's keep acting without this government. If anyone actually believes that anything positively green is going to happen during this administration, you must be completely naive.

Bush and his administration have proven time and time again that they are not interested in meaningful changes that would get them out of bed with the oil industry and other big-greed players. This is complete green bandwagon jumping, now that is is a really hot topic.

What is important is that this country rediscovers true democracy by getting rid of paid and open corruption (aka lobbyists) through election campaign reform, and then perhaps our president and other elected officials will actually act in the interest of the people and country they represent.

So all you states, local governments and American citizens (and non-citizens) keep working towards a mores sustainable future, because your pathetic president has already managed to pollute tons of it for your grandchildren.

Re: Gigacrete: An Alternative to Concrete

Mixing all kinds of waste into building blocks is not new, I saw it first in MAD magazine around 30 years ago (ok, it was true garbage, but what the heck), but seriously, cool stuff. The shameful lack of information to people working in and around the 911 cleanup site and their Bush-friendly stance on cutting back the clean air act are just 2 examples.

It is no wonder that very few in this country believe in government, but are highly suspicious of it, since its bodies have been so heavily corrupted. But here is the crux: The corruption originates from individual interests with a breakdown of the notion of representation of the people. So it is actually the private market that messed it all up.

If we really want 'good' government, it needs to be 100% independent of lobbyists and private interests, accountable, transparent, adequately tax payer funded but also subject to free market dynamics such as incentives and profit sharing.

Re: All-Nighter PCs Cost U.S. Businesses $1.7 Billion

Good article. Another alternative is using sleep or hibernate mode, which you can set to occur at off-work hours. Here is some more info from a Microsoft webpage (http://www.microsoft.com/smallbusiness/resource...>

Some Myths:

•	Turning your PC off uses more energy than leaving it on. Not true. The small surge of power you use when turning it on -- which varies per PC make and model -- is still much smaller than the amount you use in keeping it on for lengthy periods.

•	Turning your PC on and off wears it out. A decade ago, there was something to this, but not today, say Hershberg and others. It used to be that PC hard disks did not automatically park their heads when shut off, and that frequent on/off cycling could damage the hard disks. Today's PCs are designed to handle 40,000 on/off cycles before a failure, and that's a number you likely won't reach during the computer's five-to-seven-year life span.

•	Screen savers save energy. Not true. Screen savers, at a minimum, can use 42 watts; those with 3D graphics can use as much as 114.5 watts, according to Don McCall, a Dell product marketing manager who does power measurement studies for the PC manufacturer. "It's absolutely wrong thinking that a screen saver will save energy," he says.

•	Your computer uses zero energy when "off." That's true only if it is unplugged. Otherwise, the PC utilizes "flea power," or about 2.3 watts, to maintain local-area network connectivity, among other things, McCall says. In "hibernate" mode, your PC uses the same 2.3 watts; in "sleep" mode, your PC uses about 3.1 watts. Monitors do use zero energy when turned off.

Re: How NOT to Build Green

Awesome blog and comments everyone!

I am an architect in a very green architectural firm and I agree with many of the comments. I don't agree with a lifespan of 300 years, because as AnObfuscator pointed out, building technology might change to an extend that building new structures would be better for us than retrofitting old ones. This is taking into account all factors, from operational costs (carbon footprint) to hazardous materials. But I would also not support less than 50-100 year building lifespan approaches. The shorter lifespan is acceptable the shoddier the quality - known as spec or investment building quality.

By the way at this point I would add another one of my favorite green strategies:

Build QUALITY not just quantity. Less but well done, can be so much richer than a pumped up cheap shell. Unfortunately the basic premise of the "get rich quick" american ideal has little room for blue collar quality work, because our idols don't toil away in the crafts, they rake in the bucks as stock traders and white collar entrepreneurs.

What the "it ain't green..." list points out is the lack of common sense architecture that has been lost in our rapture of green technological fixes while keeping the same old standards from full air conditioning times.

You can get all your green gizmos in, but if it is a 15,000 sqft residence for 2 people it still probably ain't too green. The more individual space we need, the more

we all need to move around it = suburbia.

Common sense simply says that more compact is less wasteful. That concept works very reliably and is even cheaper and more social.

Same with the big glass areas: it's not a question if that is bad planning, it matters whether it is the right contextual answer in proper execution. If oriented accordingly to result in desired annual net solar gain and good daylight, not a bad thing.

To make it short, look for the obvious and follow your environmental instincts, seek true quality, think of the social implications, and (try to) love your neighbor.

Re: A Picture is Worth... Being overweight is unfortunately more complex than just eating less. Upbringing, economics, and the less fortunate family genes from (often overweight) parents make it harder for some than others. And not everyone is as lucky as those who live in areas where organic food is easily available.

Let's simply say that everyone can do something, but some have a harder time. We should help those who are disadvantaged via personal and government support.

Great article, very well written. I have fasted myself a few times and loved it. Very empowering indeed. I believe we will not be a better society until we REALLY understand and embrace the value of healthy food and its chain of production. I would vote for widespread free nutrition and food-economics information to everyone, especially school kids - make it as mandatory as math.

Re: Time to Pack In the Polycarbonates

Yes, there is an answer to all the worries: glass.

If you are just in need of a container at work, why not use the good old glass bottle. Refill any of the hundreds of glass container styles out there, and voila, no concerns about any leeching and even the most neutral taste of all.

And soon to be revived: ceramics. Thousands of years old, fired in over 1000 degrees, cool looking.

Why does there always have to be a high-tech fix? What we need is more behavioral awareness. I myself don't bother with them, but this goes to show that not all Singaporeans can afford the ridiculously high cost of living here these days. I feel very sorry for the old generation who worked hard and lived honestly when they now have to confront the high prices, together with the flashy ferarris and mesaratis (usually foreign owned) buzzing around downtown. Thrifty folks like that are the backbone of ANY society, and when they are gone, who will take their place? The charge-everything brats who fueled the recent financial crisis?

Re: None

Hey if you have any army stories, I am pretty sure you'll find a good crowd gathering around you, and that would be really fun story exchange! :P

Re: None

Yup, sometimes its just better to keep quiet than react and get into serious trouble. Its prolly not allowed in the army too by now, which kinda reminds me of a story by a pal who served in the 82nd airborne. Said he had a polynesian guy in his company, biggest guy he'd even seen, and one day, god knows what the goofy captain said to this soldier, he wound up punching through the captain's car window and throttled him right there and then! Even though the US founding fathers based their constitution on Christian-Judeo principles, don't forget that slavery was in full swing at that time (some of them were slaveowners themselves!), the native-American were getting massacred and America itself went to war with christian nations over land and power. Now you have herds of sore-losers from the GOP who are using "christianity" as a new rallying cry against a "black muslim communist alien" in the white house to the extent of taking automatic assault weapons to town hall meetings, so how wonderful is a mingling of state and religion?? IMHO, a religious-centered state doesn't benefit its citizens, and it would only be abused by a small minority in advancing their own agenda, usually with a genocidal and militant bent.

Re: None

They should just bring it up with the management since they are tenants anyway. THe preception is that its actually gotten ALOT easier to get an employment pass or work permit, and the island is flooded with low and middle level workers, especially those from the PRC, India etc. In the long ago past, the only way you could get to live here was either to have lots of investment cash, have a PhD in something which no one else had, or simply come on the backs of a prestigious MNC, and even being married to a Singaporean didn't gaurantee automatic PR status. Now it seems anyone and everyone can come. I am pretty much in favor of tighter policies towards those coming from the above-mentioned countries, with an authenticated educational/work-experience requirement as well.
The US IMHO has a pretty tough immigration policy, and a domestic population that won't take too kindly to being overwhelmed by foreigners, and the balance is achieved through the political and social process. In Singapore, reversing government policy from the grassroots up is not as easy, and thus the current climate.
In terms of treating immigrants well, the way I see it, most immigrants aren't even serious about staying here for good anyway. Many seem eager to use Singapore as a stepping stone to the US, and in addition, sometimes their behaviour contributes towards resentment of their presence here as well. Singaporeans are by and large a law-abiding peaceful lot, and some of these foreigners from certain countries act like Waffen-SS in occupied Russian territories, pushing people to anger through their odious behaviour, and no, I am NOT talking about the Americans or Germans here! ;P I do believe Singaporeans welcome foreigners though, but only those who are educated, well behaved, nice and civilized, that much I am sure of.
As for me, I won't ever emigrate unless I'm interested in investing in some place, hiring many locals, loving the country and maybe even being in love or married to someone from there. I could never stand being viewed with derison, and thankfully I'm not in a position where I MUST work overseas to make ends meet. Like what I always tell my US-based relatives "Guys, I am NOT coming over unless I am pumping money into a business, buying some nice place in Nantucket with a sailboat to boot, about to be accepted to the Sebonack or the Vineyard Golf Club AND I'm talking to a Nicole Kidman look-alike and we're about to be engaged!" :P

Re: None

[Singapore is a young country. Let the kids run wild, kill someone and then act like nothing had happened. I usually say let em grow up, do whatever they like in adult life, and watch em crash and burn later. Ok, one exception, the Japanese. From my perspective, I am NOT against white guys dating asian gals, (or anyone dating whoever the hell they want to anyway!), but I do understand why some AM (especially those in the US) would be rather angry at the whole business. Asian males in the US ARE indeed portrayed by Hollywood and the media as sexless physically inferior creatures, and this has been going on for decades by now. In addition, the media does protray a large number of asian females as brainless sluts dropping to their knees at the sight of any and every white guy, so in a way, there is some reason for AM angst in the US, especially when a white guy says he likes AFs. Now I am not saying you're one of the "yellow fever" 50+ types scouring the streets of SE asia looking for underaged females (I read somewhere you served in Iraq, so I guess that dispels that image!), but this is a somewhat sensitive topic amongst American-influenced AMs thanks to the media. Still, I say date whoever you want, its a free world, and all the girls I dated except two were white anyway, so its a better world if we all intermix and do away with the genocides of previous centuries. So long as you don't disparage others, no one should take any offence.

Re: None

From my experience, I would say those who study in cafes and Mickey-D's aren't good students, the scholar types either study at home, or do so in the library whilst comparing serious notes with their peers. The worst part though is that many singaporean students (especially those at US state schools) carry this habit overseas, and I've known of cases at IHOP where the waitresses get really pissed over our students hogging a table an entire night, attracted in part also by the free coffee refills. It got so bad at some places the singapore students' club had to tell its members not to do that, it was bad for PR, bad for local relations and basically, the message went "Have pity on the poor waitresses!"

Re: None

Leave Hannity, Glenn Beck and Foxnews behind when it comes to this island and inter-religious relations. Grt? Etc?

And the general assembly DID, as we all acknowledge, pass a budget with 2 billion in spending more than revenue.

I would assign this particular delusion to Madigan and Jones, and their rank-and-file, who never showed the guts to push for ANY revenue to pay for their spending.

Re: The “secret plot” to raise taxes

If you are talking about familycare, you are talking about maybe $40 million.

The 2007 and 2008 budgets did fifty times that - 2 billion in unfunded spending.
And what were last fall and the past 6 months all about?

The governor's ridiculous budget cuts.

The GA has long loved spending without having to find revenur for it. And these last 2 budgets that put us in the mess we are in now were done by them on their own.

My point is - the crazy spending without revenuer isn't going to disappear when rod is gone.
