Aaron,

I found the response to your post fascinating. I think everyone has made some valid points.

Interestingly, I wrote a very similar post in my first year of blogging, about being a woman vying to get onto the Techorati top 100 - at the time there were 11 women on that list out of 100.

Do I think there is bias? Yes. Do I think I can do anything directly about it? No.

My conclusion was the same as yours - though I will admit it was worded very differently (that's because I'm a chick, ya know). If we buy into the idea that this bias can hold us back, then it ISN'T the bias that holds us back - we're holding ourselves back.

So the only way I have found to move forward is to continue to plug on and work to dominate my niche and make a difference as much as possible. I'll never be a TechCrunch - I have no desire to be that kind of place. I DO want to have as much traffic as TechCrunch - which means I need to 'play the game' like everyone else - and if I come up against any obstacles, my only responsibility is get around them, not to focus on the fact that they are there in the first place.

in Remember Blogging and Podcasting on Chris Brogan
Seriously! Sometimes I feel like I am blogging in an empty room - the conversation has significantly moved off of blogs and onto Twitter, especially for my regular readers. There are times when I have gotten more comments about a post on Twitter than I have on my blog.

I miss everyone too. :)

Adam, with all due respect, while you are 'pretty sure Mark was referring to Marketing of Affiliate Marketing for money', that is absolutely not clear in this post (and even less clear to someone who doesn't know Mark as you do).

I believe you realize the influence of the blog you have here, and how many hundreds, if not thousands, of people can take his words out of context and believe that any site with an affiliate link is out to scam them.

This was very irresponsible writing.

And this has nothing to do with John Reese, I hardly know the guy. This is just about misleading your readers about an industry that should not have to justify themselves to Mark in the first place.

That was so flipping irresponsible of Mark to lump affiliate marketing in with known scams.

There's a huge difference between passionately speaking about your beliefs and knowingly spreading misinformation to push your own profile or agenda. Mark can't NOT know that companies like Target and Disney run affiliate programs.

If I ran a blog network (which I do) and one of my authors wrote that post (which I don't), I'd fire him or her immediately.

I also trust Mashable a hell of a lot less now.

Anger and vendettas aside, I'm absolutely shocked that you would say that MLM and Network Marketing is in the same business as Affiliate Marketing.

You are spreading misinformation that is dangerous and irresponsible for a blog as influential as Mashable.

Target, Best Buy, Amazon, Disney, and HBO all run affiliate programs. To state that these corporations are employing shady marketers to promote their products is at best laughable, and quite honestly makes you look completely uninformed and not credible.

Affiliate Marketing is no different than commissioned sales. Affiliates are paid when a commission is made.

Is a commission paid to people that sell advertising for Mashable?

Yeah, I thought so.

OK, Jim, it's a year and a half into his 2 year contract. I'd love to hear an update from both Joel and JobCentral on how it has gone for both of them, what they have learned, and would they both do it again? :)

What a wonderful article and I take it as such a high compliment coming from a firm like yours. You're darn right that a rebrand is a huge, not-so-fun undertaking. But I knew in my heart I was going in the right direction so we took the plunge!

Thanks so much for spreading the word!
