While the incentives part is hard (as you mention above), the time allocation part helps. In a previous start-up, we declared No Meeting Wednesdays. It was amazing the amount of productivity and ideation that happened when the development team had a whole day open. Yes, they worked on deliverables, but without having the day chopped into meetings, they also had time to explore, which is key to innovation.

Re: We Are Expensive and Expendable

Yes, it's a downer, but welcome to the knowledge-based economy. As we move away from creating _objects_ to creating _information_ the cost model for a company shifts significantly to labor. But while there will continue to be labor churn as companies look for the lowest cost options, keep in mind that companies will always pay for critical skills - they are what will differentiate companies in this new economy. And there is a global shortage of skilled workers. So the question isn't whether or not your job is at risk, the question is how do your skills match with your company's needs? How do you make sure your skills are valued as differentiators, or are aligned with the critical objectves of the company? Sounds like a job for Profile Mgmt (/productadvertisement).

Re: Had Good Search Lately?

"Search needs to augment my memory"

Great definition.

Re: What Superhero Are You?

Love The Tick!!

I've passed on the super-hero meme, mainly because I just switched away from Kim Possible, and don't feel like moving back. But I agree, it's a simple thing to help connect to your twitter friends, and not nearly the time-sink of FB's Ninja's vs Pirates.

Re: Connect V2 is Live

Woo Hoo! Fact is, I only read snail mail 2x/week, and there are several email filters that only get checked on rainy Friday afternoons. Sure it would be easier if all the streams converged into one, but until that happens (not in my lifetime) you have to prioritize and set expectations for response on the most common channels. 2 key questions to ask: what method is best to get your attention? and what method is best to get your action? Good answers to know for most people you work with on a regular basis.

Re: What’s Left to Murder-Death-Kill?

Another related condition: http://www.randsinrepose.com/archives/2003/07/1...
