How Obama Blew It

taritac I agree with some of what this guy says, but really, pronouncements of Obama's demise are premature and overblown. Obama needs more days like he had Thursday where he sets the focus on McCain.

in Why Housecleaning is Needed in the CBC on Jack and Jill Politics
You're right for the wrong reasons. Almost all of the black politicians that supported BOTH Booker T. Obama and Slick Willie's wife need to be replaced. The lack of any good, black, progressive politicians prevents us from even thinking about replacing Booker T. Obama who is no better than his CBC peers.

Booker T. Obama is not the end of black politics.
Booker T. Obama is the anticlimax of neoliberal politics.

Booker T. Obama and his passive cheerleaders think that just because he no longer represents a black district in the state senate they can hide behind states' rights arguments.

I DON'T have to vote for any one of these two guys and nuance is John Kerry's French word for triangulation.

It is a shame that both John McSame and Booker T. Obama support the expansion of offshore drilling, nuclear power, and liquid coal. We might have had a real debate on the issues.

Joe Watkins is supposed to be a reverend. LOL!

Scientific Not wholly accurate. Obama supports the possibility of drilling on lands already designated for drilling, and McCain wants to ignore what we already have to drill in even more locations. Nuance, perhaps, but an important distinction. As for nuclear power, Obama's supported it in Illinois, but hasn't committed 100% to doing so as President. As for liquid coal - I don't know as much about that issue, so if that's true, that's not good. But it's the dent in the Rolls Royce, people. At the end of the day, it's about November 4, and picking one of these two cats to be President. Who would you rather see in there, warts and all?

heartsandflowers Reverend is a title. It doesn't signify anything but a dubious religious affiliation. It in no way guarantees a moral compass.

in Why John McCain Will Never Be an Option on Jack and Jill Politics
John McSame is supposed to be anti-union; but every time a crooked cop is caught on tape breaking the law which they are supposed to defend, he and his republican accomplices are the first ones to show solidarity with the FOP.

People in the black community always complain about being taken for granted by democrats. Most blacks were going to vote for Slick Willie's wife before the South Carolina primary without even demanding she do anything for the black community. William Jefferson was caught with money in the freezer, but black folks sent him back to Congress. The question should be asked: Do black voters take their votes for granted? Voting blocks that want to be taken seriously ask questions and make demands BEFORE the politician is elected rather than acting as passive cheerleaders for the political establishment. Instead, black voters allow slick politicians to triangulate their positions during the campaign just to find out that the politician was no different than the last. What is more troubling is that the passive cheerleaders on this blog don't think that the criminal justice system deserves national attention. If Booker T. Obama can't convince 40% of white voters that our criminal justice system (after O.J., Paris, and Noel) needs an overhaul, then he is not as "charismatic" or "articulate" as some would have us believe.

kenyaw LL,

Obama has been talking about the criminal justice system for the over 10 years. What are you talking about?

Nevertheless, a black male incarceration rate is not a platform on which you run a campaign. That is activist work. It is up to activist to lobby on behalf of the community affected by that problem. It would be up to the POTUS to endure that the Justice Department is doing its job.
Is SBO suppose to be on the stomp saying "vote for me because we need to keep black people out of jail or vote for me because we need to make sure that crack dealers and coke dealers get the same time"? Really... I mean really.
Folks need to focus on your state and local elected officials. How about voters start doing research on the judges that they elected, since they have a direct impact on the criminal justice system.

Lastly, what does Paris Hiltons case have to do with our justice system being overhauled? Do you live in California?
The federal govt does not, and should not set state laws. If someone can afford an attorney that is better than a public defender, then you should hate on them for being able to afford a good lawyer.

Hey Michelle- long time no hear!

It's sad that Booker T. Smiley took the covenant more seriously than either Jesse Jackson, Joseph Lowery, Cornel West, or Booker T. Obama. He originally wanted to call it The Contract With Black America, but Reverend Lowery insisted that it be called the Covenant. Now I know why- they weren't serious about holding the political establishment accountable. Contracts can't be signed by surrogates. Booker T. Obama's expressed commitment to the "contract" might have created some FISA flip-flop like situations in which the black community might get upset. From a selfish, political perspective it was probably wise to avoid the SOTBU for the fourth year in a row and marginalize Booker T. Smiley in the same manner that he would eventually marginalize Reverend Jeremiah Wright. In the long term, allowing slick politicians to avoid and ignore a "contract" with your interests in mind will show the establishment how politically immature you are. The black community didn't take the Covenant seriously, so they have no right to complain about being taken for granted.

How's that liquid coal thing working out?

Booker T. Obama doesn't want the Covenant to go mainstream. He's perfectly fine with negotiating the same access issues from the past 30 years.

You might want to change that to Booker T. Smiley because while Tavis is talking the talk, Barack is walking the walk. How's that new book coming along?
