in The Nokia E71… are the fans actually impressed? on Mobile Industry Review
Isn't the point about the E71 that it's pitched as a high-end smartphone, but we all know it'll be pushed down range pretty fast and soon be available on the lower priced contracts... and so really it;s been designed for that price point and therefore comes with compromises?

Ben Smith No, not high end... It's mid-range. It's the E90's and the like that are high-end for E-series. I do hope they do a QWERTY high end device, but this isn't it. It is however, the best device of this form factor in the range :-)

in The Mr Operator Series: Getting a deal with a mobile operator on Mobile Industry Review
Isn’t it perhaps better to work off-deck first?
Build-up some track-record (users, experience, statistics, and maybe revenue, etc) and then take it to an operator for a portal deal?
Portals are over-run with content that’s difficult to discover. I thought operators were cutting back on small third-party deals and just going with the mainstream, high volume stuff … ebay, yahoo, etc

Ewan Generally, yes. I think that's an accurate viewpoint, Gabe. However there
are a number of applications and services that many operators will want to
resell as additional services to their customers. Zyb, for example.

in Vodafone Update: Talk to Lee from the FIT on Mobile Industry Review
Re: Orange... it's organizational failure. The operator became very beaurocractic (sp?). Lots of people who work there, in all divisions, at all levels, realize there's a problem with data tariffs.

But they just got a new chief exec, so things should change pretty soon.

The obvious thing to do is change provider -- you are being mugged.

Shame voice doesn't work for you on T-Mob, cause their package is comeptitive.

3's good as well in my experience.

in Is Truphone the modern day Boo.com? on Mobile Industry Review
I use Truphone quite a bit – nearly always for international calls or when I’m abroad and phoning back to the UK. This saves a good bit of money, but you’re restricted to areas of good WiFi signal (a major drawback of any mobile VOIP service)

I like the way it integrates with the Nokias and doesn’t require a specialist client. I don’t mind paying for calls. Rates are competitive enough.

I don’t buy the termination revenue argument, though. Why would you give your Truphone number out instead of your normal number?

Call quality to European mobiles is often appalling… but it can be hard to tell if it’s the WiFi, the termination service, the foreign mobile network, or the receivers’ handset that’s at fault.

What I’d like would a feature that integrates international call bypass with the TruPhone account– so I could make “normal” international mobile calls at lower cost.

I like Truphone, it’s a useful service

in Did the N95 kill Nokia or revive it? on Mobile Industry Review
Point taken on the N95… it’s big, hard to use at first, and the browser isn’t great.
But to balance it out some, there is a vast range of apps available. As devices get easier to use and smaller, this ecosystem of apps will influence what phones people buy.
I’m not sure you can say that “normal” people don’t/won’t want third party apps, or that everything will be done in browsers.
