in Review: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button on Jandy's Meanderings
I liked the framing device, personally. Because, er, I like framing devices? And stories being told? I think there's supposed to be some significance to the Katrina setting beyond the emotional manipulation; I thought that penultimate shot pulling back from the hospital room was really powerful. Something about life going on amidst chaos or something.

I agree that it would have been nice to have the whimsy of the car accident sequence reflected in more of the movie. It did feel somewhat out of place, but I think it fit in its own way since the movie was trying to capture LIFE as a whole, and that is one facet of the way the world works.

Jandy I often like framing devices, too, and I wouldn't have minded this one so much if it hadn't padded the running time out so much. And it's not that I'm against long movies, either - this one was just needlessly long because they tried to put too much in that didn't really need to be there.

The friend I saw it with suggested that the Katrina setting was a tie-in to Brad Pitt's Katrina relief efforts. :) I guess there was already enough sadness and doomed love in the main story for me without the added horror of Katrina in the frame story. Again, it was just too much.

I get what you're saying about the car accident, and he did incorporate that whimsy a little bit more with the recurring segment of the guy who kept getting struck by lightning (forgot about that when I was writing). I loved those parts. I just felt like I saw suddenly watching Magnolia or Amelie or Pushing Daisies rather than Benjamin Button.

And yes, random circumstance that depends on other random circumstance is one way way the world works - but the stylistic way of depicting that series of circumstances is a filmmaking choice that was basically arbitrary in this film, because it wasn't consistent with the rest of the filmmaking choices in the film. It's not that I didn't like the events happening like that, but Benjamin had not previously shown himself to be that sort of storyteller, so for him to all of a sudden choose to tell the events leading up the accident in that manner was out of character.

in My 2008 Recap on Jandy's Meanderings
Heh, Condemned was pretty fun.

Oh, oh, you need to play Braid. It's a platformer/puzzle game with gorgeous music and lovely painted backdrops and a poetic story and you will love it. Innovative gameplay with fiendishly clever puzzles.

Jandy I played the demo of Braid and loved it, but I have yet to lose my Arcade virginity. If there were any Arcade games I'd fork over $$ for, though, it'd be that one. Maybe I'll do it one of these days.

in My 2008 Recap on Jandy's Meanderings
Man, look at all those movies I need to see. I've seen some of them and liked them too, though!

My brother was trying to get me to play Bioshock the whole time I was here, but I didn't think I'd have time to beat it (I was right, I think). I will definitely keep it in mind. I agree with you on Mirror's Edge.

Have you played Dead Space, though? Because that shit is AWESOME.
Jandy I think I beat Bioshock in a week, but I had it as a rental and played on easy difficulty just to get through the story faster. You should definitely play it sometime, though - price for it used is probably coming down by now.

No, I hate survival horror kind of games. HATE. So I've avoided Dead Space, Condemned, all of those ones.

in Music Monday: 1st LA Edition - Army Navy and Silversun Pickups on Jandy's Meanderings
Jandy! I love Silversun Pickups and have seen them live three times (once opening for Snow Patrol last March!)!

I was just listening to "...All the Go Inbetweens" earlier. Love that song.

Jandy Wow, you've seen them a lot! I don't know why I wasn't feeling them when I saw them with SP. Next time they play around here, I'm definitely going.

in Bishop Allen @ The Echo, 11/11/08 on Jandy's Meanderings
I took the An Horse song and "Butterfly Nets." They both have a Sound. Listenable, nice.

Jandy Heh, "a Sound." I like that. And it's true. It took me months to like anything by Bishop Allen other than "Butterfly Nets." They're a bit of an acquired taste.

You're a Tegan and Sara fan, right? An Horse toured with them a bit; I think it was kinda their first big break. Interesting factoid.

in Horror Clip Quiz Answers on Jandy's Meanderings
You know, when you pull out all the scenes like that, it really highlights what a great montage you put together. There's a whole flow and everything!

Jandy Thanks, I try! I was basically just like "lead up to terror, terror, aftermath of terror." Fun to do and made it work with the music better. ;)

in Quiz: Guess the Horror Clips on Jandy's Meanderings
Hrm. Here are some ones I think I saw? I'm sure of a few of them, but that's all:

The Creature from the Black Lagoon
Nosferatu
Night of the Living Dead
The Sixth Sense
Bride of Frankenstein
Psycho

Jandy You're right on three of them! Three of them you're making up. :) Good guesses, though, even on those.

in Guess Which Show’s Doing Hitchcock Again? on Jandy's Meanderings
I just beat Assassin's Creed last night! So now I know what you're talking about. Except Altair always landed on his back. Heh.
Jandy Yeah, Altair's falls are definitely more graceful. And have better camera work. :-) Still, definitely similar. Great game, isn't it? A bit repetitive, but climbing and jumping all over everything was effortless and awesome every time.

Ouch! That does sound like a nightmare. I eagerly await my DVDs, and I will greatly appreciate the effort and pain and permanent muscle damage that went into getting them to me.

But since I do enjoy punching things in the face:

Congrats on winning the YouTube award!!

I have a feeling you'll win the Yahoo! award as well, given that you've somehow got nearly twice the votes of Break a Leg at this point. There's been some frenzied clicking, it seems.

Kevin, yeah, it's sad. Not to diminish the quality of any of the contenders, but the race is clearly more about who has the most fervent fans (where "most" can alternately modify "fervent" or "fervent fans" and still be accurate). And there's no more fervent a fan than a Whedon fan.

Okay, that video was pretty funny, and props to Yuri for being a good sport.

I just voted from home after voting from work, and, holy crap, now it's neck and neck! 6849 to 6848. They should stop it right now so that I cast the deciding vote.

No, I think the best sitcom on the Internet would be Arrested Development on Hulu.

I love the Urban Dictionary. Especially because it defines me as the coolest kid around town.

It also defines many, many things I don't really want to think about, but you've got to take the sour with the sweet.

According to Urban Dictionary, "clutch" is "Great, Essential, and Potent rolled into a single word." So if this musical is clutch, it must indeed be pretty awesome. And possibly able to father many baby musicals.

And good point, crossoverman! It's only a matter of time before we see a Guild musical episode, then, right? (I just caught up on the series today and laughed a lot. Congrats on the SXSW award!)

Gah. That sounds completely maddeningly stupid and annoying, and I haven't even played the game. I didn't even know there was a "sex scene" in it. I agree with you about the double standard. I mean, the "Hot Coffee" GTA scandal was ridiculous and dumb too.
