New "wildcard" structure?

The team with the best record gets a bye the first round of the playoffs.

The other two division winners pay each other.

Then the bye team plays the winner of the first series.

I dislike the notion that a second place team that wasn't good enough to win its division can make the playoffs. Talk about an NHL mentality?

My dislike even extends to the very beginning of the wildcard system when the Yanks were the wildcard team. Back in 1995 I felt they did not deserve to be in the playoffs as they did not win their division.

Jeff, you're on the mark.

Some guys here might recall that way back when I advocated hiring Girardi as the new manager and was enthusiastic when he was indeed hired. I was ecstatic, in fact.

Now I admit I WAS WRONG. Girardi is terrible and our weakest link. I'd love to see him dumped, but as the team has a good record he might not be canned. Geez--under Girardi we don't have the ability to deal the knock-out blow. Right now anything's possible these last few days of the season. Hold on, boys....

And I respect all of your opinions. Perhaps I could say that there have been many 23-year-old pitchers who washed out of major league baseball, so perhaps Joba is one of them. As I said many times here concerning other issues (Girardi, Cashman), I might very well be wrong. I just don't think I am and stand by what I said earlier. As a Yamkee fan, I'm not happy having to say what I felt I had to say.

Glad to hear what you said, Greg. As I said a while back, I'm sick of Joba and his "game." This guy has turned out to be a bust. I'm not sure he'll EVER be any good. The question is, how long will it take Girardi and the rest of the Yankees "brain trust" to realize that this guy will kill us every time he pitches. The bloom's off this "rose" (as I've said before, too), and it's time for us to admit that we will not win when this clown is on the mound.

Don't misunderstand: when Joba first showed up, I, too, was behind him and enjoyed the way he pitched. Well, for whatever reason (we over-estimated his pitching talents and/or his mental attitude, he has some sort of injury, or the team ruined him with their stupid, idiotic "Joba Rules"), he's now a serious liabilty who might never be able to perform in Pinstripes. He needs to go far away because I'm sure that whenever he pitches we will lose.

Perhaps this reveals the incompetence of the manager, or the pitching coach, or any number of others who keep giving this guy the ball.

Perhaps a ticket back to Nebraska is in order. I'm sorry to have to state such things, but it's hard to argue with the stark reality we've been witnessing.

I've got to say that I'm so happy for Jeter, who will always be tied for first as my Favorite Yankee. Who's the other? Why Lou Gherig, of course. Full disclosure here: I'm way too young to have seen The Iron Horse play, but my dad still tells me stories about how Gehrig played the game, so no Yankee will ever pass him in my estimation. The only bummer in this thread is the mention of that fish-faced Yankees radio clown. Funny, but when I'm up in NYC (as I am many times during the season) I never listen to the games on the radio but merely check the scores on my BlackBerry.... But no matter.

A great win last night. I watched the game on Direct TV and also had a hunch that someone would win it for us in the bottom of the 9th. Way to rock and roll, Yanks!

It's great to return to NYC for a performance such as this!

As I said a while back here, the bloom is off the Joba rose. I think he's a lousy pitcher period, and whether that's due to bad handling or just an over-inflated opinion of his abilities it doesn't matter. He's lousy and I cringe whenever he's on the mound. And I don't care how young he is. Perhaps it was last year's injury, but I don't think he'll be a good pitcher for us in any role.

Cody Ransom is still on this team? Can you believe it?

OK, I started watching the game as the top of the 7th started. All I can say is this is a disgraceful team. For the first time in 54 years I've decided to take a break for about two weeks or so--no checking the Yanks scores or watching on YES. I'm willing to "eat" the money I paid to get the games. We are a disgrace. I've got mother things to focus on in life.

Greg, surely you can block IP addresses if you choose, no?

At any rate, I'll see you guys in a few weeks (right before I head up to NYC for three weeks. I've not bought any tickets and don't plan on doing so). I've got to tell the truth--I've never been more ashamed to be a Yankees fan. I truly hope things get better.

I'm not sure sure how long I can live in the past by saying that Wang did this or that a year or two ago, when the most important concern should be what he's doing NOW. And right now, he sucks. Is it not possible that one serious injury could ruin a pitcher, perhaps forever? Has this ot happened before in baseball? Oh, boy! Enough on him....

You know, I'm beginning to think the Yanks MIGHT really believe that the RS have it over them. Quite frankly, these games help us Yankee fans understand the word "agony." At times I just don't understand Girardi, either.

A-Rod sucks on the clutch, as we've known for a while. Perhaps he'll start to do better, but we've seen no indications of that so far....

Andy's just so erratic, I feel he can't be counted on. I don't live in the past, and what he did years ago carries little weight with me. Right now, I have little confidence in him. No big deal--it's just my opinion.

I agree with the comment that last night's game reminded us of the Yanks during the first week of the season.

Yep, we could have gained on everybody, but instead we lost to a pretty mediocre team....

You guys might remember that I, too, was in favor of hiring Girardi. After watching him last year and this, I think it's only a matter of time before he's gone. And I really don't care if a rival hires him. I'd hire Pena for at least the remainder of this season, and then see who might be available next year(keeping Pena in the mix, for sure).

And, last but not least, the name I've been holding off on mentioning--The Dweeb himself, Cashman!!! Henceforth, I will call him The Dweeb. More on that sad case later. For now, let's just say that his short-comings have been evident for quite a while. We are in trouble, no matter how young the season.

I sure as hell haven't given up yet, but we're in dire trouble and our current "leaders" have no clue--no clue at all.

All we can do is cross our fingers until the change comes.

I came up and turned on the ballgame after band rehearsal ended. It was a shitty rehearsal, and when I saw the score I could see that things were going even worse for the Yanks.

Oh how I beg Hal to so something relatively fast. Our team looks horrible, our manager looks like a lost little boy, our coaches seemingly have no clue, and we keep getting players hurt.

As I said earlier in a few places here (and as Scott also mentioned above), I've got to think the Yanks' training program (set up by coaches and trainers) has something to do with their injuries. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I don't think so....

We are terrible. Oh, boy....

The more I think about it, the more I think these injuries have something to do with the conditioning/exercise regimen used by the Yankees. I know Jorge's a bit on the "older" side and we can expect injuries in guys his age (he's younger than me, I need to add here), I'm still wondering if the Yankees training "plan" has something to do with all of these injuries.

I watched the game at a friend's house last night and enjoyed posting comments as I was watching the game. I'll post using my lap-top while watching games at home, too!

I went home after that foul-pole homer, and was starting to nod off as the 9th inning unfolded. Almost...almost, but we couldn't quite do it.

I'm worried about this team right now, and I'm not sure what the rest of the season holds. I'll tell you this much: I would indeed like to see another manager and coaching staff with the exception of Pena. The coaches have no clue, and our pitching coach might be the biggest loser of them all. We're pretty much a ship without a rudder. I'm not giving up yet becasue it's way too early to do so, but boy am I worried. Between our coaches and the front office (no names mentioned yet), we're almost adrift. OK--enough of the nautical terms for a while.

Now I'm going to do something that always makes me feel better--give a few final exams!

Perhaps I need to stop fishing, because whenever I spend the day fishing and come home to check the score, the Yanks are in trouble.

In another thread I speculated that there's something about Girardi and his coaches that seems to lead to many injuries. Hmmm....

I'm still biting my lip (for just another...what?...week or two?), but I must say it looks like Girardi hasn't got a clue. When I came home and turned on the game, the camera showed Girardi in the dugout and he looked like a lost little boy....

Of course, Greg knows exactly which guy in the front office I was never too crazy about, but I'm still biting my lip....

What a disgrace....

Guys,

I was out fishing on a lake in Tennessee all day and then went for a few beers at a red-neck beer joint. We got back to my friend's house at about 9:30 CT and turned on ESPN to check scores. I got to see all the highlights....

Oh boy, are we in trouble. That's about all I can say. I'm going to wait about two weeks before I name any names (especially the name I know Greg just knows I'm going to mention! LOL), but I'm afraid we're going to have to make many changes from top to bottom in order to improve this team. I've not seen a more humiliating, prideless defeat than todays's (I refer in particular to the pitching staff). Oh my! We are in deep, deep trouble.

You knop, with the seat pricing debacle and the quality of play (pitching) I'm seeing on the field, I must say I long for the days of the "healthy" George.

This is truly sad indeed. The Yankees must lower prices and get fans back in the seat--the real fans who aren't millionaires.

Last weekend I came up to the City to see two of the games (the ones they won), and after Sunday's game I was walking through Manhattan on my way to have a few drinks at one of my favorite watering holes. I thought I'd call a friend who lives in The Bronx right near the Throgs Neck bridge. He's a passionate Yankee fan who must have hundreds of Yankee shirts. When he goes to a game he has a ritual for putting on his nearly complete Yankee uniform!! When I have an extra ticket I always give him one. Well, when I spoke with him on the phone I told him that I only managed to get one seat for the game that day, but that I'd be sure to get him a seat to a few games this summer. I was shocked when he told me that he would have politely turned down a seat for Sunday's game and he will turn down any seats for games this summer, too. He's no longer a Yankees fan after what they did to "real fans" by raising ticket prices to almost mind-boggling levels. This once die-hard Yankees fan is no longer a fan, and he won't even consider going to a game when he's offered a FREE ticket!

What the Yankees have done is so sad. They have become, indeed, the face of greed in sports. I pray they see the evil of their ways.

I'm sick of the pitch count crapola. Can't we train a pitcher to throw 100 or more pitches? Or is there something in the way the Yankees are handling/training their pitchers that makes their arms fragile or that makes them more susceptible to injury?

Why are these guys so fragile that we have to limit their pitches in the first place? Man oh man....

I'm not thinking Wang will be good any time soon.

On another note, I'm really starting to think Gerardi and his no name coaching staff (Pena aside) are the problem. I know it's early in the season, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a switch made some time this year. I say this admitting that Gerardi was my first choice for manager last year.

I really like the place, but it does seem different, sort of like a "realistic dream"; it's so real and familiar, yet in some small ways it seems different and foreign.

For the most part, it does remind me of the "really old stadium" I went to in the 1960s much more than the rennovated one across the street did.

Time will tell, I suppose.

I agree with Kevin.

There is a sign posted on the outside of the wall you can read from the street near the old right field stands that tells you what they are going to do. Apparently the old diamond will be kept and used for a "tournament field" (I forget the actual wording but it's something to that effect). It says nothing about the dugouts and the first few rows of seats, but keeping both would be a great idea. I think the timetable calls for demolition to be completed summer of 2010 and the new parks ready to go Spring of 2011. They will call the place "Heritage Field." Check that sign the next time you go to a game.

I hear there's still some old sections of seats from the "original" stadium under the seats of the lower level in the place they're now demolishing. I don't know if it's true or not, but that's what I've heard for years. Of course, those wouldn't be the original seats as they put blue seats in the place around 1968or so.

Sort of like those old "subway stations under existing subway station stories" I've heard over the years (which are true, by the way).

I went to the games Friday and Sunday (thank heavens they won after I flew up from Nashville), and a few guys told me how 1) the old stadium that's still standing might very well have something to do with it; and 2) those "slots" in the wall right behind the last row of grandstand seats might have something to do with it, too.

I'll add one more thing: as I sat in the RCF bleachers on Friday I noticed more of a breeze than I ever noticed in the RCF bleachers in the old place. Hmmm....

I love the new place, but I'll look for the appropriate thread from the last few days and post there.

I was there Friday and Saturday and have to say I was very impressed with our new digs. I did not know what to expect, but I must say that the place is beautiful and as time goes by it will become even more of a home to us all. Give it time: soon, we'll all see it as YANKEE STADIUM. BY the way, I sat in RCF Bleacher section 203 on Friday and Main level section 234 (last section in left field) yesterday. Nice all around, but I still prefer sitting in the RCF bleachers.

We need to win it all so we can really feel at home in our new stadium.

Let's hear it for Swisher! In many ways I think he was the perfect addition to our team. His personality can only help us out, and he ain't too shabby at the plate or on the field. Bravo for Swisher!

You know, a few folks in this thread mentioned Micahel Kay (to me, he's one of those guys who always looks like he stinks, but perhaps that's no matter), and one of you mentioned how he seems to get excited when the OTHER TEAM hits a home run or scores some runs. I'd add that he even sounds like he's rooting for the other team (of course, that garbage man Sterling does the same thing). I have no idea why the Yankees would hire someone who sounds like he's rooting for the other guys.

But for years now I've had a solution. I actually listen to the televised games with the sound off/muted. I know enough about the game to know what's happening. Now that I get all the Yankee games on the dish, I find myself much more relaxed (even when they are taking a beating) while I watch the game with no sound. How pleasant it is not to have to hear that plastic-faced bozo sound like he's cheering for the other guys.

Has anyone else noticed MK's propensity for this?

As I recall, yes, that wall in front of the bleachers is part of the original wall. Of course none of the bleacher seats from 1976 on were the original ones.

I notice where they seem to be dismantling the old park very carefully, especially when you consider the way they literally tore Shea Stadium down. I guess they want to preserve as much stuff as possible for sale....

You know, after I got MLB Extra Innings yesterday I was anxious to watch every Yankee game that's on TV. I still am.

Funny, but by the fourth inning I was in mid-season form, cursing up a storm, uttering words to the effect that some players are way past their primes, etc. The only thing I did not do was throw anything!!

Having said that, I also realized that this is only the first game of the season. If we're playing like this in June, then we have reason to worry (I'd say that if we're playing like this in June Girardi will be history, but that's a moot point right now).

I'm still looking forward to flying up to The City for next week's opening series (well, at least two games of the opening series). If any of you guys will be there, let me know!

I'm not surprised that Posada might not be ready by opening day, at least not after speaking with a local "bone doctor" who operated on my knee. In fact, Posada might be cooked as far as throwing in the major leagues goes. Trading Matsui won't upset me, but I also have to say that Molina should work out fine for us. Perhaps he can raise his average a few points, too.

Of course, we'll need a reliable back-up catcher. Now where to get him?....

I'd have to say that Girardi has one more year to "prove" himself. It is possible, however, that he might be gone if the Yanks get off to a slow start, but I'm not so sure about that one.

I also feel Pena will be the guy to replace Girardi if indeed Joe is shown the door (whenever that might happen). I for one would like to see Pena given the chance and feel he'd be a good manager.

All I recall about those chumps at ESPN is how they were crowing about how no one should rush to judge Bonds as we must assume a man's innocent until proven guilty, and then they quickly dismissed Reynolds solely the basis of an accusation. Looks like in this case it was fine to presume someone guilty! As some of you might recall, I dislike those weenies at ESPN.

My folks live in Flushing so I frequently take the 7 into Manhattan (especially when I'm having a few adult beverages while there), and I also drive by the new place in Flushing when driving down Northern Blvd. Now I know I'm a Yankees fan so my comments might not appear too objective, but I must say that the new park in Queens looks rather ugly, especially when you view it from Northern Blvd. I bet the view from inside the park will look nice, but outside? Well....it's rather "yuk" to me.

The new Yankee Stadium blows it away as far as looks go!

I'm fairly certain that ESPN had two "angles" on the Tex singing, each dependent on which team did the signing. In the event the Shanty Town Red Sox signed him, those morons at ESPN would be crowing about how Shanty Town signed one of the premiere players in the game, a move that would assure them of another title this coming year and probably every year for the next eight. If the Yankees signed him, however, ESPN would play the "It Was Strictly Money That Lured Tex" angle that they did indeed play once the signing of Tex by the Yanks became official. How dare the Yanks spend money at a time of such economic hardship! Oh how "bad" that must make so many other teams feel! Imagine how many fans of other teams feel right now as they see their teams stand by helplessly as the Yanks spend money! It just isn't fair, I tell you. It just isn't fair! But it's no matter--Tampa Bay (who performed so admirably in the WS!) will still be the team to beat, right Buster and Steve? Go, go Tampa Bay! Beat those evil Yankees! Use your "home-grown" talent to crush the Yanks into the dust!

Oh well. I feel better now....

I would agree that all of this should have been figured out by now. It's a bit frustrating to hear about other teams making deals, and from the Yankees--silence. Perhaps they're waiting for the free-agent period to open before they make their first big move. Then they'll move on to trades....

At any rate, they should have had a game plan in place by now. I hope and pray it's not "business as usual" in the last couple of years sense.

Yep, I'll keep on doing it until "the end," I suppose. We do what I'd call "classic British stuff" with a few American tunes thrown in. I also have a neat bunch of basses and amplifiers. As Ian Anderson said years ago, you're never too old to rock and roll.

1) I've never liked Miller-Morgan. Only Buck and McCarver are worse in my opinion. I always hit mute when any of the four mentioned above broadcast a game. Morgan always struck me as an idiot, and I'm truly not saying that because he never seemed to like the Yanks;

For years I heard that Yanks were thinking of moving to New Jersey, and I'm convinced they would have done so. And then, sad to say, my days as a real Yankees fan would have been over, kaput, dead. When the Giants and Jets left The City, so too did my fanaticism toward them (more Jets than Giants, but I did indeed root for them both) and to this day I like to see them win but truly feel they don't really represent NYC anymore. There was no way I'd travel to NJ to see the Yanks play. I get the creeps just thinking of it.

By the way--yes indeedy, the name "Randy Levine" does indeed sound "douchey." I'd also say "dweebie" but for the fact that to me that phrase best fits Cashman.

At any rate, I, too, am glad the Yanks got what they want.

Again, way to go Danny and Mike. You bet they think we're rubes, and can you even imagine Congress wasting it's @#$%ing time with this sort of stuff? I'm going somewhere to calm down. Geez.

I'll admit that I think Pena would make a pretty good manager and that I wouldn't be upset at all if he were one day given the job.

As this season unfolded I told a bunch a friends that I'd have no problem giving Gerardi one more year to see if he can prove himself a winner (of course, he might only be as good as the players given to him). I'll stick to that, but the stories above sure have me thinking....

I'm sort of hoping the Dodgers do well. This story is making me wonder if Torre grew disillusioned with the Yankess organization when they did not really get too many good players via trades or the free agent market the last few years. Just a thought, that's all. I wonder if he was fed up with what he considered questionable player moves (or non-moves)? As I said elsewhere, I have a hunch we have still not yet heard the full story of what happened between Joe and the Yankee organization last year.

Gee, perhaps a manger is only as good as the players on the field? Could it be?

I guess no one ever heard of truly convincing a player to WANT to be somewhere. The fine art of persuasion, through which you actually get someone to change his mind and realize that it might be good to be in a certain place. Does BC even bother with such things? THIS would be the sign of a truly great GM in my opinion. Of course, if CC does not want to be here under any circumstances.... I'm just wondering if BC is capable of genuine, sincere persuasion. At times such things help in life....

Of course they're going to back off on CC--that's what Cashman (aka "The Dweeb") has a tendency to do. If CC comes out and states that he really doesn't want to come to NY, then perhaps I might be convinced I'm wrong.

To me, the fact that the Yanks might be backing off CC sounds like the same old story. The funny thing is I'm not even the least bit upset by this "revelation." It's what I expected, I suppose.

Let's see how many of the other names mentioned above the Yanks "back off" on. What, me worry? We have Ian Kennedy to get us to #27!!

After sleeping on this I woke up this morning to the conclusion that next year the Yankees will probably be in the same place they were this year. I really expect little change; after all, by rehiring him the Yanks have basically commiteed to the status quo, no? But as I said yesterday, if they have limited his "power" somewhat, there might be hope. I'm not sure he's capable of "finishing the job," though.

If I'm proven wrong I will admit my stupidity here in the forum and announce to the world my silliness and idiocy.

Well, you know I'm not happy about this as I see no reason to believe he will start making the deals we need to make to get better. Now if he's lost some control this time around that might bode well, but I just don't know.

I now expect more of the same the next three years but certainly hope the team manages to get better.

The more I think about this, the more I wish we had gone elsewhere. I also confess that the guy strikes me as being a "dweeb," but perhaps this dweeb will change his stripes and suddenly figure out how to get the Yankees back where they belong.

I agree with Pinstripes.

I went to many games in the "original" stadium and more games than I can remember in the "current" one. The current stadium lost almost ALL of its character when they refurbished it the mid-70s. Don't misunderstand--I loved it, but it lost so much when they decided to "modernize" it.

I'm looking forward to the new stadium and hope to meet up with many of you guys there. Perhaps we could arrange a "Sliding Into Home Night" at the new park this coming season? Just a thought....

Indeed, this issue needs to be resolved as soon as possible, whether they dump Cashman (I'm leaning this way, despite the interesting post elsewhere here) or get someone else to steer the ship.

Funny, but in that Buster Olney article he talks about how Cashman has built a good farm system, and yet earlier this year I swear I recall the same Olney stating that the problem with the Yankees farm system was that they really had no good prospects in the pipeline. How can you have a strong farm system that features no really strong prospects? Perhaps Olney has changed his mind (does he really want Cashman to return so the Yankees stay weak?), or I am missing something (also a possibility)?

Wow! Sounds like they will give the Stadium a rousing send-off. I wonder how one goes about getting tickets (that's if they offer some for sale, of course).

Perhaps at the end of this ceremony they can light up the lights at the new stadium, sort of a passing of the torch as it were (as I mentioned in another post here in the blog).

I think they should have read a list of all Yankee managers, and that would have at least gotten Torre's name mentioned. Imagine that...the suits at Yankee Stadium threatening to take away season tickets in the bleachers because folks chant "Box seats suck!" (and other things, I'm sure). Yankee brass acting like Puritans (hey, most of Puritans lived up near Boston!!!!) and trying to "sanitize" the "Yankee Stadium game experience." Oh well--I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Will they kick out one of those guys with a $2500 seat next year if he curses? What do you think, Greg?

I attended four games this summer, and in each game I heard the "Box seats suck!" chant only once during each game (and it was pretty lame, too). Do you know if stadium security was cracking down on the bleacher creatures somehow? I thought I did indeed hear them chant it during roll call, though.

Well, Happy Birthday first!

It killed me that I didn't make it up to The City to see the game, but I watched it from my outpost in Tennessee.

I, too, have the very real feeling that I have not visited Yankee Stadium for the last time. Perhaps I'm just an optimist. Perhaps it's just the fact that the "general" address--161st Street and River Avenue--will remain the same. And yet...

I spent much of the time in front of my TV weeping. Go ahead and call me a wimp if you'd like, but that's what I did. For thirty years I've sat in the bleachers in either Section 37 or 39, and a flood of faces came back to me as I watched the game last night--faces of the dead, and faces of the living. Faces that were once young that are now older. Faces that I will see everytime I get in my car and head up I-81 for one of my five or six yearly visits to NYC. Faces that will stay with me until I breathe my last.

But to your question. My favorite thing about last night? It's a tie: the "ghost team" from the first game at The Stadium in 1923 AND Jeter's speech with the walk around the field that followed.

But to echo a few of the comments made here, I must say that the whole thing seemed so very odd somehow, and I just can't pin it down.

You know, I was hoping they'd do something like shut down a few of the lights in the old stadium, and then--a few lights in the new stadium would click on for a short time. Sort of a passing of the torch. They could have directed the fans' attention to the screen so they could all watch it. The glow of the lights from the new stadium would have been a really neat touch.

I'll be at the new stadium next year and hope to be able to meet up with some of you guys (I'm easy to recognize--the big bald guy who doesn't sound like he's from Tennessee. You can't miss me!). Before I attend my first game at the new stadium, though, I hope to walk around the site of the old place. Just one last time, you see. After all, we all have our own ghosts, don't we?
