I don't know if I would rule him out as a president, but I am amazed at how many religionists there are in the ranks of austrian economists, because austrian economics uses logic as its main tool of analysis.

in Atheism: More Aggressive vs. Group, Less vs. Individuals on dmiessler.com | grep understanding
Definitely a worthy goal, but difficult because religionists take such ownership of their ideas and aren't accustomed to looking at them under a microscope. If they start getting defensive and give physical cues of distress and cognitive dissonance when you attack their ideas, then apologize and back-off. Also, rather than attacking "their" ideas, maybe frame it like, "I don't think I could believe that because...". If they are open-mined, they will reflect on it and perhaps discuss. If they are closed-minded they won't be able to continue the conversation at all.

Daniel Miessler Very nice.

cooperati "religionists take such ownership of their ideas"

This is called conviction, and it is entirely right and proper that they should take ownership. This type of conviction and ownership shouldn't be narrowed down to only religion, but must be put to use in daily life.

do you have a spirit? may I see it?

Jack David Baucum Do you have feelings? Can I see them? Or a consciousness?
Either way it is a red herring from my point, which is that Daniel is comparing apples and oranges. Science and religion/philosophy attempt to explain different areas of our existence.

Liberty and markets. Let enterprising inventors bring to market better ways to improve our lives, help "criminals" and keep us safe from anti-social behavior (true crime).

along the lines of some of the other comments: your solution in part one is assumes that a subgroup of humans, a government, can eradicate disease, promote peace, etc. for all of humanity. Government is a monopoly on the use of aggressive force. Everything it does involves the use of force and flies in the face of voluntarism, peace and prosperity. It is impossible for it to achieve the ends you stated.

The victim's response was reasonable and necessary to prevent death or serious bodily injury. The threat was immediate (as opposed to imminent) and unavoidable. The requirements for lethal force were satisfied so no charges were pressed.

in IQ Is Real, And It Matters on danielmiessler.com | grep understanding
Daniel said we all know a high IQ isn't a guarantee of success or happiness. Happiness seems to be more of a state of mind or an attitude that may or may not be dependent on external realities. I guess he meant by "making life easier" in no. 2 is that it is easier to make a living with a high IQ. I totally agree with that.

Whether or not a higher IQ means a greater aptitude to be kind and considerate I don't know. If you think people are kind and honest because they are smart enough and mature enough to realize it's in their own best interest, then ya, it is tied to you intelligence (maybe not how we typically measure it). This makes the most sense to me....like Socrates who thought that no one would knowingly do bad to themselves.(I guess to others to by extension) If they do, then it is because of lack of knowledge. I realize that this doesn't work in some situations, but I am happier when I think that everyone is innately good. They only behave badly because of lack of knowledge.

Then I watch a special on National Geographic about Columbine and I am baffled at how some people seem to be just plain evil.

That is just brilliant. If Dapper Drake did that when I installed it for the first time last year in an effort to learn linux, I might still be using it. I ended up buying a Mac and love it. I hope Leopard will approach do this workspace thing too. I have nothing against switching to Linux in the future though, but there are some sweet apps on the Mac that I wouldn't want to give up.

@jf: according to Information week the Assistant US Attorney Greg Staples said that they wouldn't have known about the problem without the hacker and that the information they got from the hacker kicked off the investigation.

I think this does amount to an illegal seizure and don't understand why the 9th wouldn't agree.

I feel really sorry for Julie and her family. What a nightmare. I donated via paypal a few minutes ago.....definitely worth it if it frees her from this mess and points future prosecution at those who write and distribute spyware instead of the victims.
