The market is very good at seeing the discrepancy and adjusting (at the product level... at the macro level, all bets are off).

What people could benefit from are independent financial advisers whose fees do not depend on commission or a %age of profit or funds under management. Hard to find, though.
.-= Allan Jenkins´s last blog ..links for 2009-11-05 =-.

Re: Twitter case study: part deux

Hopkins... these people are.... this town is... magnetic.

<abbr>Allan Jenkins’s last blog post..Slow travel & social media (part one)</abbr>

Re: Backup, backup, backup. A story that is fleshed out in the lede, and more so in the rest of the story.

I don't care a fig for Heath Ledger, but some people do, and the editors of SMH wrote the story for them. Actually, the editors of SMH also wrote the story for those of us who don't care -- I would have seen the headline and moved on, grateful that my time had not been wasted.

If you take Trevor's advice, the Heath Ledger story should have read:

Dead in Bed

It's not like getting laid by Rodeo Boy. In your tent. While the sheep murmur and the wolves sing songs of the untamed West.

Yes, it was the bed of one of the Olsen sisters. Not the tent of Rodeo Boy. But Ang Lee was not there to weave the tale, And the Olsen hottie wasn't there to ... whatever she does.

It was death. Death discovered by the maid.

No sheep. No Olsen sister. Not even newsworthy.

(story continued on 7B)

What a waste of time that would have been.

Re: Thanks

Learning from the master... wish I could have teleported there!

Re: 8 things you didn’t know about me

I cannot believe you tagged me with that... now I will have to think up plausible BS to impress people I don't even know. Literally, the amount of professional knowledge I've gained from IABCs network and conferences (of which I have attended just a few in the last few years) has always outweighed the dues.

Were I joining today, I might weigh IABC more carefully... to a large extent, the IABC network is available online, bypassing IABC entirely. A wasp or bee, being essentially single minded, can be "taught" in seconds, whereas a dog is, well, a dog.

It's a great idea, but the high-school dropouts who handle airport security in the US will surely protest. Even his cookbook is excellent: recipes interwoven with sublime essays on life, love, loss, redemption.

William Styron, Virginia (Sophie's Choice, A Tidewater Morning, Lie Down in Darkness, the Confessions of Nat Turner). Writes slowly and publishes rarely, which may be why he has 60 years of bestsellers.

Peter Taylor, Virginia and Tennessee. Superb short stories, and his short novel "A Summons to Memphis" is one I read every year.

Ferrol Sams, Georgia. Sams is a retired physician who first published at age 60 or so. Tighter, edgier, funnier stuff than I'll ever write.

And Flannery O' Connor, Robert Penn Warren, Eudora Welty (the email program "Eudora" is named in honor of her hilarious short story "Why I live at the P.O."), Faulkner (of course), Shelby Foote. And the tremendous Bobbie Ann Mason (Kentucky), whose short stories can only be read one at a time: two would be an overdose -- they are that good.

Oh... don't get me started!

Re: G’day to Stephanie and the crew!

You slay me, Hopkins. I have the same feeling, but I had the same feeling in 1994-1997 with Web 1.0. No one bought it at first, then a few said "yeah... ok, but..." ... and then, whoosh... from 1997-2001, I didn't bill one hour for off-line communication consulting.

Dave Traynor makes a good point: we need to prove benefit in both improved communication and in better use of resources. Frankly, I think we all get a bit too evangelistic about the first, and spend too little on the second -- I know I'm guilty of it.

Re: Today is Anzac Day

Great holiday. Bad sign.

What's worse for them is that I was warned off.... they didn't get a chance to make the sale.

Re: a fistful of bloggers

Lee, I believe the debate over there is a bit self-righteous: can I be pure if my blog is a revenue source?

Sure. GoogleAdsense, for example. I would never believe a blogger is biased because of Google Ads. Ditto for Amazon Associates.

For payola or gifts directly related to a post, it's more complicated but still not an issue for me:

1) a book or software sample? Mention it in the post.

2) anything bigger? €25 or more? Can't be justified. No thanks.

Talking about or mentioning a client or one of its main competitors? Say so. Ditto with important suppliers.

And finally: You can't buy my good words, and you can't pay me to shut up.

For me, that sums it up without being complicated. Anything more edges into navel-gazing hand-wringing (just picture that and you'll laugh).

Re: Welcome to the ‘new look’ blog

Hey Professor Hopkins... love the new look! Kevin Kelly's New Rules for the New Economy (1998) touched it, as did Frances Cairncross in the Death of Distance ('96, if memory serves).

What's not new but relevant about Anderson's article is

a) it's coming after the dot-bust. Rightly or wrongly, much of the "net punditry" slate was wiped clean in 2000-2001. A lot of relevant stuff written them was tossed in the trash heap with all the worthless stock options.

b) In 1998-2000, little history could guide us. We only knew how going digital "should" affect intellectual property. Now we know a lot more, and Anderson did a pretty good job of pulling that together. It's not original, but it's important because many more managers are ready to think about the message.

c) Yeah, he "invented" a term for it. A pithy one that people are latching onto. As a communicator, I can say that is only good. Again... not original, but right place and right time.

All the best, Allan

Re: Bacon’s reaching out to bloggers

Actually, it was a mass spam by Bacon's to any blogger who had fallen into their database, according to the project manager in charge of the effort (I emailed her).

And according to Phil Gomes blog, it was almost a direct copy of a similar Edelman/Technorati survey.

I was prepared to cut them a break, but their effort fails on so many counts that it should be an embarassment.

Re: fame

Oooh... They've delayed me a few times, lost my bags once, and even bumped me once, but the staff have always been polite and helpful (albeit harried).

As recently as December, their check-in agent turned a very blind eye to my family's overweight baggage: "Are you a Medallion member, sir?" "To be honest...no. I was Gold in the late 90s, but..." "Great! Great! No problem, I'll just tag these.... there you go... enjoy your flight!"

Granted, Delta is much friendlier in the Southeast than it is anywhere else...

In fact, I'd say Delta's biggest problem is their codesharing with AirFrance... now, those are some mean, pissed off people.

Re: World’s dirtiest screen

you touched it without surgical gloves? I don't know about other folks, but Billy and I are on good terms again. Simple misunderstanding.

Robert, you and Shel mentioned my code of blogging ethics on the Red Couch a couple of years ago. One reason I feel I have to "go after" sploggers from time to time is because of, well, ethics. I'm under no illusion that I can help shut more than a few sploggers down, but I think ignoring sploggers signals them that the field is clear.

The real problem, as Amy Gahran points out on her site, is that Google and Yahoo provide an enormous incentive to sploggers, without giving safeguards to bloggers with CC licenses. But surely Google has every incentive to keep its AdSense ads "on the right side of the rules"... I simply cannot believe that those bright people cannot devise a method to do that.

Or is it technologically impossible?
