if you're comparing this game to the last few, wait til toure yaya comes back. he got hurt saturday, but when he's in, barcelona's other mids push up a whole lot more into the attack. if you're watching to see ronaldinho moves, he pulled off a couple, but i don't know that he can dribble past defenders anymore.

the first pk was a dive, but it shouldn't have been called a foul since the defender clearly got ball. you can't really argue w/ the second one since buffon obstructed the forward even though the forward was able to avoid the contact.

it's prob too early to tell how the new schemes are effecting Chelsea. it's kinda foolish to jump on the Ten Cate bandwagon when he and Grant have just been introduced. the main difference I see is that whereas Jose would have been happy with a 2 or 3 nothing win, Grant is going to have the team pushing for as many possible. Chelsea have the players to do it against most competition, but we'll see how that translates against the big boys as the season progresses.exciting stuff, though.

Madrid has looked really bad a couple of times this yr. usually Casillas saves them or the other team just has awful finishing. Getafe should have murdered them earlier this yr, but their finishing was atrocious. why is that Madrid looks so good one week and then so bad the next?

i still think England played better in the first half. at least there was some good attacking play and possession in Croatia's half. the two goals in the second half came completely against the run of play. one was on a bad penalty call. the second was on a broken play that allowed Beckham to get free on the right with space (still a brilliant cross and score though). other than that, England was back on their heels and allowing Croatia time and space to possess and direct play. even Bent's chance came on a random long ball. it looked like the kind of soccer we played in America as kids. yeah, England looked that bad.

Ronaldinho is so terrible these days. He won't run at defenders anymore. Even worse, I don't think he knows how to run and play at a high level anymore. Either he goes, or Rijkaard goes. This pairing is just not working out, and I say they both might end up gone soon.

okay. he's not terrible. but he's not good either. barcelona is not a team that should be relying on freekicks for goals. the only reason he looked half decent is b/c eidur gudjohnson played so badly before ronaldinho replaced him. if deco or etoo are playing, there is no need for ronaldinho. i'm rooting for ronaldinho, but it's almost been a yr and he's only gotten worse.

ronaldinho needs to play in a withdrawn striker role like where henry was playing. he's not quick enough to take it from midfield to goal like he used to. eto'o was stranded for much of the game w/o a partner up top and w/o messi to feed him the ball. i actually like iniesta in that left side position, but i won't complain that ronny should be benched b/c he has been giving it more effort recently.

i gotta ask. why does barca insist on playing henry on the left? i know that's where he played on arsenal, but spanish defenders don't give him the cutback to his right as an option. is he just more comfortable there or are they planning on a henry etoo messi triangle for the future. i just feel like they aren't taking enough advantage of his shooting ability.

on the last two breakaways, reading's defenders were not sprinting. i'm guessing it was fatigue, but you still have to run hard and help your teammates. they made it too easy at the end, though if man u were finishing better it wouldn't have mattered.

one more thing: Henry should be playing striker and not out on the left. why does Rijkaard continue to use him as a left forward/winger??

I remember one particular time where Messi had the ball on the left edge of the box near the end of the game but couldn't find anyone to cross to. Henry was behind him and outside of the box. this is just foolish positioning. Henry needs to be playing in a more central role so that Barca can take advantage of his shooting ability. with Etoo gone and Messi getting triple teamed on the left, the game should be focused on getting Henry shots in front of the goal. ohh, but I guess that would too practical.

the thing abt Milan is you can't really predict anything abt them from one game to the next. Arsenal is in a dangerous position b/c they didn't capitalize w/ Milan having a bad day. you never know what kind of game a Kaka or a Pato will pull out in front of the home fans.

i'm very glad Henry finally got to play in the striker role, but did you notice how Messi, Henry, and Eto'o took turns playing each other's positions when Ronaldinho came off? on the third goal, Messi was in the middle, Eto'o was on the right wing, and Henry was middle-left. later, Eto'o and Henry took turns playing left and center. i was so confused.

i'm looking for an upset from Roma. after so many games against Man U, maybe they'll be able to conquer their nerves this time and sneak up on an overconfident United. on the other hand, a Barca-ManU semifinal would be great television.

i've got liverpool-chelsea III in the other semi though i expect fenerbahce to knock in a few at home.

after Walcott's play i hated to see the game get turned around on a call like that. Arsenal shouldn't have been surprised by Babel's run, but that was no penalty. i understand how the ref might have been fooled since the defenders' arms were up, but Babel made an absolute meal out of a bare touch.

Hey Nightfox, here's what happened: Babel pulled the old fender bender trick. He sensed Toure running behind him and then braced for contact hoping to go down easy. The problem was that Toure avoided Babel with the body, as is shown on the replay. Having anticipated wrong, Babel slightly lost his balance and decided to continue into a fall seeing that Gallas was in front of him. The ref was behind the play so he assumed the contact had been greater. It's a tough way to go out. I was hoping Arsenal would win b/c I don't see any of the other teams beating Man U right now, and I'm a Barca fan.

that was a ridiculous call by the referee. they called the foul on Terry in between the keeper and Campbell I believe, but every player seemed to make a clean effort for the ball.

also, isn't it the referee's prerogative to decide whether play resumes on a whistle after a foul? if so, that's awful that the ref would allow Portugal a cheap scoring chance after such an important call.

France has too many defenders in midfield positions. They play like they are looking for a 1-0 victory. I could be wrong, but it seems like they are playing at the slow pace they used to fit Zidane's playing style, except they don't have a true central midfielder to hold possession and distribute. Ribery is not strong enough to hold the ball in the center of the park by himself. He needs more attacking players around him to combine with.
