in Breville UK fail the customer service test on expōnere
That is rather poor. It's like they don't give a damn and have a part-time trainee doing the replies whenever there's nothing else to do. It'd be interesting to know what those high up in Breville think about this level of service.

in The 30″ mobile phone screen from Mobintech on Mobile Industry Review
The likes of Mobintech and Vuzix really need to start collaborating with handset and PMP maker. They really need to add some kind of mini-HDMI, mini-component or what-have-you as these things will always suck when all there is to feed them is a dodgy composite connection.

in Ewan MacLeod from MIR Responds on expōnere
Ewan's response has explained some aspects but now I'm confused on other aspects! As I have no business sense whatsoever, I can only hope he knows what he's doing (and I'm sure he does) and that it all goes to plan.

One thing's for sure, I won't be getting a subscription - it's just a little out of my price range!

in MIR gets on the wrong side of Coracle Media on Mobile Industry Review
When I saw the title of this I thought, 'Oh no, what have they done now?' :o) And *that* was it?!?

My sympathies go out to Ewan and the MIR crew, not receiving future releases from this PR will surely be a tragic blow. Although I'm sure you guys will recover!

in Never miss a show with Sky’s Mobile Remote Record service on Mobile Industry Review
You really need to jump through hoops to get it working, but once you do it's great!

Spent ages on the phone to various Sky folk, even had to have a TV package added! They credited back the difference. Why was an extra pack required? Well you can't have Remote Record with an odd number of packs!!

The 'record' signal is sent over the air - not via the Sky+'s telephone connection. That's why it's sent almost immediately. It's also why it works even if the box isn't connected to the phone line (or the line's engaged). The downside of this is there's no way of seeing if you have a programme clash or no space left on your planner.

in INQ win ‘best handset’ at Global Mobile Awards 2009 on Mobile Industry Review
I knew about INQ1 winning but didn't know Sports Tracker won an award. Cool.

Can't wait for the INQ guys to bring out a mid-tier handset or, if it doesn't defeat the whole purpose of what they're doing, a high end device.

Just wish 3 in the UK offered it on shorter contracts. 18 months is far too long. 12 months is only available at higher priced tariffs. No 6 or 9 month contracts at all (with or without paying for the handset).

I'm probably showing my age, but when James had the jacket done up and hands in pockets, I just though Man at C&A! :D

Looks very nice, wouldn't mind getting my hands on one. Just loved the W595 that I played with last year. It was the first ever SE device I'd used and it was fun and impressive.

in The new media economy with Twitter at the heart on Mobile Industry Review
I'm finding it more and more difficult not to follow @stephenfry on twitter! I get to follow him by-proxy through nearly everyone else I follow and although I don't mind the fellow, I just don't want to be yet another follower for the sake of following!

Of course I'm also jealous that he has about a gazillion more followers than me... ho hum! :D

Could we not somehow bring Andy McNab into the mix? In return for doing his Jack Bauer thing GoSpoken could get lots and lots of coverage! :D

in Taking the Mobile Industry Review show to Kabul, Tehran and Pyongyang on Mobile Industry Review
I'd imagine Tehran would be very do-able logistics-wise and the authorities fairly welcoming. Pyongyang is open to Western tourists but from what I remember reading (from those that have gone) you have to put your name down on a waiting list and once there you have a minder at all times and, um, phones are taken off you! :-D
1 reply
Ewan's picture
Ewan Oh that wouldn't work -- taking our phones OFF us ... I'd be happy to agree not to ShoZu anything without getting the minder's approval though.

That's if they even have a data network in North Korea? My knowledge of the place is strictly limited!

in MIR Show goes to Rome and finds locals using N73s on Mobile Industry Review
So many things to digest... There's my N73 rotting away in a draw when in Italy it'd be the creme-de-la-creme and how absolutely useless Nokia Maps is at... well anything! Why couldn't Nokia have bought up tomtom instead? I want a brand spanking new version of tomtom City Maps and I want it now!

As for next MIR city... hmm Kabul perhaps? There's quite a few interesting mobile stories there to uncover!

Ewan I'd do Kabul if you all sponsored us, Ant.

So we can hire some SAS chaps to run point.

in Flirtomatic heads stateside with Flirotmatic US Beta on Mobile Industry Review
There's quite a few people using the service in Nigeria too. Including, in the last few days, a "woman" I've been chatting to named Tammy who claims to be head over heels in love with me (after about two messages) but desperately in need of money wired to her so she can get back to the UK. :-D
1 reply
Mark Curtis Yup, we get this from time to time. We eliminate them as soon as we find them and usually mainstream users report then fairly fast. If it gets worse we just block the IP for an entire country.

Could you mail me with this woman's flirtname so we can lose her? I'm Mark@flirtomatic.com.

I've sent Ben the first part (I've struggled to narrow down my thoughts on them, so it's in parts!)

In the meantime The Mirror has this to say about mBlox (I've plenty to say about them too): http://blogs.mirror.co.uk/investigations/2008/1...

in The ever-present arse that PhonePayPlus has to deal with on Mobile Industry Review
My ears are burning, no really! Who'd have thought toasters could be so dangerous?

In all seriousness, I've got lots to say about PhonepayPlus and not much positive I'm afraid. They've promised many crackdowns in the past and yet they've failed to curb such activity.

Ewan I'd like to read your thoughts Anthony.
Alas I have quite a defeatist attitude to the likes of PhonePayPlus. Run by
the industry. Toothless apart from slapping huge fines (that, of course,
don't actually put the scammers off).

in Free Imperial Majesty Nassau Cruise - survey cold call on digitaltoast
Another Ant here, but I'll more of the sceptical kind!

I just answered the phone at my parents place and got the silly cruise ship automated cold call. They get them all the time and I get them every now and then (or at least ones very similar).

I really hate scam artists, cold callers, general fraudsters, opportunist and all round PITAs. I can feel a little investigation coming on (I love digging dirt on these kinds of folk).
