I visit these locations every weekend searching for fun stuff. The Rebuilding Center is the true gem. You can easily find lumber for a project or siding for your 1890's bungalow or a window sash that matches your 1940's Tudor. I recently recycled some tongue and groove cedar into a garden structure to grow squash.

Re: Lagunitas Kill Ugly Radio

That is one tasty beer. A few years back, we walked most of the length of N Interstate and noted all the abandoned buildings and properties. I believe it was 11 or 12. Now it is down to 5-7. Some of the abandoned buildings have been razed, but after 3 years, the lot just sits abandoned collecting trash. That to me isn't the way to do things. I foresee this happening on the corner of N Williams/Fremont where the Franz bakery was razed. Do the developers have the $$$ to actually build?

Check out the corner of N. Just had lunch there. I'll preface this with the knowledge that they have just opened and are ironing out the kinks. The have table service which is nice and attentive. The menu is small and straightforward with everything you stated above. I ordered a kebab plate which gave me kebab, a salad and fries or rice. The kebab was tasty, though a little dry. The salad was subpar - iceberg lettuce with some feta on top. The fries were a little soft and probably had been cooked 10 minutes prior to serving me. In the end, it the food was about a 5.
Service wise, they were about a 7 or an 8. My waiter was very attentive and brought me water and such and the food came out fast. The owners (or whom I believe are the owners) came around to each table thanking the patrons for coming in and genuinely asking how everything was. I like that in a place, give is character. Downside was they got busy and I had to wait about 15 minutes to get my bill.
They'll work it out. Not sure if I'll be back anytime soon. The OLCC didn't like it.

The Cleo-Lillian Social Club is indeed closed. It was located just south of Pizza a Go Go on NE Williams. It is my understanding that a couple of individuals have purchased the building and want to designate it a national registry building and then restore it to its former self. I remember seeing a request go through the City's Bureau of Development.

You can still go to Twelve22 on NE Fremont/Vancouver if you want an original social club.

Re: Don’t take my liquor store away!

John,
Not sure what you mean by the "nasty comments about those of us who have lived here a long time" statement.

Trust me, the detritus I speak of are not long time residents who are being "displaced."

Lelo, I didn't realize there was a store up there. What's wrong with Street Fairs? Are you against inviting others into your neighborhood to see what you and your neighbors are all about? I for one love the Street Fair as I have loved everything that has gone on in the past few years. Normally, the nightly news would report any shooting even remotely close to North as happening in North when it actually was Gresham or Vancouver because North was where all the crap happened. Now, all the news is ga ga about bikes and fairs and well, the love of North.

I for one am happy about that.

Re: How Infantile!

I agree with Betsy. People should be more responsible. And if they get hit, it is their fault right? I guess so.... My point is that people aren't good with change. They have their daily routine that includes getting on the train at home and getting off the train at work. When that is disrupted, no matter how much they are informed, they may still make bad decisions. Some people are just plain dumb. If there were suddenly 5 car/pedestrian incidents at the Rose Quarter, this city would want TriMet's head no matter whose fault it was. Heck, the pedestrians could have run straight at the moving car and in this city's perception, it still would have been TriMet's fault because the Boregonian would say so and the masses would believe.

Re: Building a Telecaster

I build fences and pergolas and fix up my house. I understand a lot of people wander on the side of the track in "the Cut" in North Portland up by St. Johns. This is a length of a deep crevice where there are multiple north/south tracks. Honesty, a great place to go for a walk....but

There had been numerous injuries do to things hanging off trains. Most open cargo is held down by cable and sometimes that cable breaks and swings around. According to the police, there had been incidents where people walking alongside the track almost 10 feet from the rail were hit and injured by items hanging of the train.

I do think they were a little too aggressive though.

Re: Surprise - You’re on Candid Traffic Police Camera

Just claim you are a trimet bus driver and you're off the hook. Seriously, Im surprised your issue was with the singing and not the shitty sound or the audience members chanting "NickleBack! Nickleback!"

When choosing a venue, remember other than the Town Lounge, the Crystal is the farthest venue west of the river. Ergo, it is the closest to the dreaded west side and their sideways baseball caps.

Re: New New Seasons for North Portland? - w00t!

I do think NW needs a New Seasons. Should we go back to the 80's when there was an Albertson's across from a Safeway down the street from a Thriftway all trying to win by going 24hrs? In the end you still end up with 1 corporate store telling you what you can and can't eat?

I shop at New Seasons and I shop sometimes at Fred Meyer's. My question to you - why do I need the choice of 20 brands of Garbanzo beans? I guess it is personal choice.

What I love about having New Seasons close is that it allows me to shop fresh. I have always had this image that my neighborhood would support the ability to take a walk and pickup my bread, pickup my produce, pickup my meat and other items and head home. Maybe do that on a daily basis. I know that isn't the most efficient method and probably costs more, but it also doesn't involve the car trip to the store and the $100 price tag. I love that New Seasons actually has staff in the bakery, the cheese area, the meat counter, the produce counter. Got to Safeway or Freddy's and see if there is a butcher there to cut you something special. Nope.

But again, this isn't about me. Cam, what would you like to see?

Re: New New Seasons for North Portland? - w00t!

All, thank you for your the great conversation here. Great views of the mountains and such.

Sauvies Island - great for a nice country drive or to check out the corn maze.

Pittock mansion in the west hills off Burnside - another great view and you may be able to take a tour. What I got out of King Corn was that HFCS is in everything we get that is packaged. Look in any pantry and you'll find corn in everything that has been bottled or pre-packaged for you. We went on a strict diet a year or so ago for health reasons and had to cut out corn. That emptied our cupboard. We were so surprised, but it didn't hit us until we saw King Corn and then re-evaluated our pantry. Every day, I try and buy unpackaged items or fresh items in order to get away from HFCS.

Thanks.
