in red-eyed and bushy tailed - journey. thanks to everyone who voted me into... on Red Eyed and Bushy Tailed
The game was, "get the most votes," not "get the most unique voters to vote for you." I have no idea how many different people voted for Morgan, and neither do you.
In other words: Suck it, Kraig. :)

in Introducing the Django Debug Toolbar on Rob's Cogitations
I've had this exact same problem (but overall, I LOVE the toolbar -- great work, guys!).
I've narrowed it down to this bit of the template panel template:
<dd>
<div class="djTemplateShowContextDiv">Toggle Context</div>
<div class="djTemplateHideContextDiv" style="display:none;"><pre>{{ template.context }}</pre></div>
</dd>
If I comment that out, it works fine (albeit without showing the context, which is one of the most useful bits!).
I have seen the SQL panel cause hangs, too, but this only seems to happen on pages with excessive queries (my fault, not yours, but it would be nice if it handled the situation a bit more gracefully).
Sidenote: If DEBUG=False, the debug toolbar throws loud, fatal type errors. I would assert that it should fail silently, and just do nothing (so that the page gets rendered as per usual, sans toolbar).
Again, great work! Despite a few looking issues, this is really, really great stuff. Thanks to everyone involved!

> It’s probably a pain to install on Mac OS X as well.
Actually, it'd dead simple to install on Mac OS X, since OS X comes with Python, MySQL, and Apache. I've never tried it on Windows, though, so I'm sure you're right about that.

Oliver, I do realize that was humor (and fairly funny, to boot!), but just to clear up any misconceptions: Django has no "scaffolding." Rails does the scaffolding thing (although I believe it's purely optional), but Django does not.

I don't know if it's the "best," either. That's why I said, "almost certainly." I'd say it's the best I've seen, but if you know of other really good ones, I'd love to see them! :)
Thanks for the kind words!

Damn, nice job man. Love the MP3s, too. Great singing, and the player is even pretty sexy.

Are you forgetting that your ugly design examples -- eBay, Google, and MySpace (owned by Fox) -- are all big companies?

Shaun is working on a new version of ShortStat that is absolutely brilliant. I've been beta testing it for him, and I can tell you that it blows the socks off the old version. I've not used a lot of other apps, but I sure love this one!

in Someone’s Annoyed at Paul Scrivens on Elliott Back's Blog
Heh, I just noticed this. No, Scrivs never pissed me off. Well, except when he raped my sister, but that's another story (let's see how many rumors we can start!).
I was also amused at the "controversy" and was in a goofy mood those days, so I was just playing it up.

Hey there...
Just noticed this site in my referral logs. Love the design. Looks great. I like the header image a lot.
I do agree with orangeguru to some degree about the logomark effects, but if it suits you, stick with it! It does seem a tad "flashy," though, comared with the rest of the site's minimalist, sleek look (which I love).
Great job!

in The Art of Navigation on Dan Rubin's Superfluous Banter
This is too beautiful, Dan. GREAT work. The only other technology that could touch this from a design perspective is Flash (and it has it's own problems).
This may be one of the first examples I've seen of something that trucly couldn't have been done with tables, but can be with CSS. Specifically, I don't think you could have made the hover-state inactive tabs get larger with tables -- only with Flash.
Very cool, and sexy as hell.

in The Old Technology Giveaway: Contest Results! on Dan Rubin's Superfluous Banter
I don't know if I've ever lusted for a computer the way I lusted for the BeBox. What a brilliant little piece of hardware it was. And, not a bad OS sitting on top of it, either. Too bad it never took off. My only real beef about the BeOS was that it was single-user.
I also remember that EVERYONE was convinced Apple would buy Be and use the BeOS as the core of the modern Mac OS. Of course, they opted for NeXt, instead, and many people weren't happy. I think we can all see now they made the right choice.

Beckett is a STUD. I was SO impressed by him. Congrats. Must be nice to be a fan of a world champion. Now, if only my Kansas City Chiefs can finish the job and/or my Kansas Jayhawks live up to the hype, maybe I'll be in the same boat. :)
