We have Lonely Planet and all those travel guides to thank for that. Their books have this warning to beware merchants and taxi drivers over-charging tourists especially in Asia.

They even advise to first negotiate for a third of the quoted price then settle for half. I think that's where your guy got the 3 peso idea.

So now we have this trend of foreigners bargaining down to ridiculous prices because they have this deluded notion that you can live on pennies in the third world.

Yup - I screwed that post up. I should have explained that the two christian groups I was referring to. I've had a shitty day and I will admit this.

First off, I think Mr.Grinch speaks the truth when he says, 'It is the Christian who wants to be able to do as they please and NOT be held accountable for their actions!'. This is what is so apparent in modern day christianty, and such is the case in my personal experience with the christians I have encountered throughout my tenure of 'faith', that, yes, christians do NOT want to be held accountable. I'm not going to relate to you all the instances where I have had to "clean-up" after a sloppy christian who thought that by *saying a prayer* (or something else christian-like) he could effectively excuse himself from his responsibilities...

You mentioned "I am a Christian and I do believe we are all accountable for our actions". OK, so I think you might be the first exception I have encountered. Perhaps you should start a church here and teach the many assholes here a lesson? I'll give you credit for stating that "we are all accountable for our actions"; I agree wholeheartedly, regardless of what your world view is. But unfortunately, your sentiment is not that of the brand of christianity that is raising its ugly head today. Just listen to what is going on with far-right christian agenda worming it's way into government politics, education, etc. We have an irresponsible, and backward theocracy creeping into power that seems to very much look forward to the day that the world is thrust backwards into the dark ages, then ultimately into a burning cinder, with all the 'unsaved heathens' roasting in hell! And yes, I get quite pissed off at the prospect of this.

So, those are the two camps of christianity I meant. You, apparently belonging to the more docile, liberally-minded camp. I just wanted to know - with each of these sects constantly at each others throats over their interpretation of christianity - which camp do you belong, and which one is more correct?? Because for every 'Joythruchrist' argument in favour of her brand of christianity, there's going to be someone else arguing in favour of some other brand of christianity, and so on. I still think that if christianity was really 'god inspired', etc, then there would only be ONE flavor of christianity - wouldn't you agree? -Wes.

First off please don't be upset with me for what I am about to say. I mean it all in love. I think it is great that you are studying other religions. Not all muslims think it is mind poisioning. The koran actually teaches that people perish from a lack of knowledge. You did right. I have faith that you are going to have a great relationship with muhammed, especially now that you are trying something else. You must believe in muhammed in sprit and in truth, not because its the norm or to fit in. Now you have the opportunity to test things out. You know what it is like to live without Allah. Some people don't. I challenge you, if you will, to give muhhamed another try. What will it hurt? What I mean by try him is, talk to him like you would talk to a friend.Put away all the books and logic and just talk to him. Ask him to prove he exists. Give him a chance to have a relationship with you. That is what true muslims build there faith on. Our relationship with muhammed. The koran never promised people would not suffer, be hungry, homeless or penniless. He did promise to be there with you and lead you out of if or through it. The more you come to know muhammed for yourself the better you will understand why there is so much pain and suffering in the world. Many people don't understand how a God could let so many horrible things happen, but Allah never said that horrible things wouldn't happen. He never promised peace on earth. When the world if falling apart all around me he makes it bareble. He provides peace with in, when there is no peace around. Don't base your decision on other peoples actions and how horrible the world seems. Base your decision on your own relationship with Muhammed. If you never have had one then you can't understand why muslims are so devout. You have already tried Religion and of course it failed, now try muhammed. He won't fail you. You, however, have to 'believe' in god, because you have no evidence that can substantiate its existence, so therefor you have nothing concrete about god to confide in. All you have is your 'faith': the ability to accept an idea as 'truth' without any consideration whatsoever to the facts surrounding the issue... -Wes.

Nice job of getting the multiple exposure look for the canon, Alec. To me, the rotation worked very well but the slap zoom effect isn't as obvious as I would expect. Love the combination of colors in this image.

I really like the slap zoom effect in the second image. The rear curtain sync technique sure did give focus to the tree trunk at the last seconds. Looks like the trunk wasn't zoomed but the top of the trees with the leaves did zoom. Very nice effect.

This is certainly different than what I have been used to on the last few posts, Alec, but I sure like the deviation. When the image first popped up on my monitor, I thought lensbaby or a special lens technique and then find out what the backdrop is. How clever is that? I have seen window well inserts before but most are solid plastic of some sort. This on lookw like it is a reflective material and this adds to the overall color interest in the image. Great use of the imagination.

We have a new Wal-Mart Super-center in Columbia, SC that was build with light sensing florescent fixtures. I have noticed that during the day the overhead lights are completely off. The store has hundreds of skylights. The freezer section has motion controlled lights that only come on when someone walks up to them, the floors are made of colored concrete instead of vinyl tile and the garden department is not cooled, It is instead designed for maximum airflow.

Fueleconomy.gov lists the 1985 Mercedes 300 SD under the new rating system at 19 city, 23 highway (1985 is as far back as they go, but any Mercedes 300 turbodiesel of that era had the same engine). Now granted, CAFE 35 mpg isn't the same as window sticker MPG, but still, if Mercedes sold only this car today, they would not meet the standard. And a lot of states, like California, will buy these cars and crush them because the smog-forming emissions are so bad.

I understand the sentiment of the article but am tired of web sites playing fast and loose with fuel economy numbers.

If you sit for four hours using power stored in this auxiliary battery device, good luck recharging it before you want to idle again. There isn't tons of excess alternator (power generation) capacity in a police cruiser when the engine is running- the equipment loads approach the capacity of the alternator. So given that those loads will continue when you do start the engine and drive again, I'd bet that it'd take an hour or more of driving to recharge this device per hour of using its stored power. Better than nothing, but it may under-deliver in practice because the vehicle just doesn't have the juice to support making full use of it.

C'mon Christopher, I think you were a little harsh on this one back in the 90's. I thought it was interesting how they marketed a "horror" film, but gave us a very bold and daring look at the world of catholicism. I would have at least gone with a B- as the film did a very good job of tackling some very touchy ground.
