I wanted to tell you that I'm also constantly wondering why women aren't in open source, and wrote about it here: http://www.banane.com/2006/09/08/tech-post-3-wo..., and I'm in SF WoW, and we're constantly talking about it too. In fact, Sarah Allen offered a free dinner anywhere if a woman on the list contributed to open source! I'll read your article and write back with comments, just wanted to drop this note quick.

thanks- anna

Re: A modest proposal

Comma screwed up the link. One more try:

http://www.banane.com/2006/09/08/tech-post-3-wo...

Notes on your article-

I definitely had a lot of time playing with computers when I was growing up, which I credit to my mom, who always had to have the latest & greatest. In interviews, my random geeky projects usually shone more than my professional experience. "Installing linux from the network on my laptop" and "making an internet webisodic" , etc. The way to institutionalize this? I'm not sure. I'd support your starting point, though. When I was growing up in Silicon Valley, I went to tons of computer classes. They were everywhere, and cheap. I just found fellow nerdie girls to join me. Is that prevalent now? Not sure. Our gorup- www.sfwow.org- had an ajax workshop recently, and there we decided to host a women-friendly superhappydevhouse. Someone had gone to one recently and let's just say... we had some improvement ideas :) better food, in the city, etc. But I like the effort, and it all sounds good- not to diss on shdh or anything. One thing I wanted to point out is that women, at least, really like to learn from other women but also need to learn from men too. Many of my geekie male friends are supportive, and I also just ignore their bluster and arrogance about technology. I don't think they'll change, and in the interim I'll learn the skills for projects that I want to do- movies, poetry databases, stuff like that. I think that's my argument in general- women are more practical, and interested in social fabric stuff, so if technology relates to that, they will learn it. Making a baptism gown? Sure, a wordpress plug-in exists for that, made by a very smart open source woman contributor. Take a count of all the knitting blogs.

Re: (steve isaacs) - My FriendFeed "Interesting" Stats

I find you interesting! Media rate for a pound of books- anything with a hardcover, basically, and some long tomes like Infinite Jest, is $2.07. The unabomber incident made it so that anything over a pound can't go in a mailbox. I tried it 3X and the third time got a nice little red sticker and a return. So I go to the post office- they say, you don't have to wait in line, just walk up here- if it's proper postage and over a pound, that is. Not sure htey let you skip the line for real questions. There's a shallow part of the counter (at north beach at least) and you put your over-pound-media-rate package there, get eye contact, and she/he will nod at you, and off you go.

Those arch. books- if you list on amazon make hte sender pay postage as it will probably be steep. It's not in the footer, but at the end of a post, the individual post content, which users can't see, you can only see if you "view code" in the interface. I will change the db password, seems like the best idea.

Re: Business Idea

Alyvia- yeah it's tough, funny thing for me was inverting the question, from where to what. Like, literally, what activities do I want to do all day. Me? I love the post office and packaging things. Favorite bit of being an author was making those packets and sending them off. Envelopes, printing, "office work"- it's all good.

Re: Things I Love About SF

testing

Re: http://laughingsquid.com/bacardi-rips-off-the-cacophony-society/

Oh this story reeks of so many things I hate: New York provincialism "this could only be shot here", advertising people trying to do something that someone else has done with more hilarity and panache, and artists stealing other art. Ugh! Go Cacaphony. I'm so proud I live here! They are hilarious during the race- and to the person who has never heard of them before, you've been missing out!

Re: FriendFeed Followers - Lurking or Particpating?

I think this is a truly valuable enumeration/quantification of the online participation process! Or when you're breaking up with someone, do they really need to know why you defriended them? It's kind of obvious. I think the more people use social networks the more they realize that it's easier to not add acquaintances in the first place. Question for you- while Andrez wasn't notified of being dropped, did he see you in his friendlist? In other words, is the functionality bidirectional or just unidirectional?

Re: Social Media Workshop at SFWoW

I'm so excited!
