in iPass Offers Wireless Net Access to Consumers with WiFi/3G Network on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
I have been waiting for iPass to make this service available to ordinary folks. Unfortunately, you need a Windows PC! No Macs allowed. No iPhone, only Windows Mobile. : (

in Dodgeball? Jotspot? Jaiku! on Scobleizer
I also prefer Jaiku to Twitter, primarily for its mobile application and RSS feed aggregation. As for Twitter having all the people - it depends where you live. A lot of Europeans are on Jaiku, whereas Twitter has a bigger user base in the US. At least that's the sense I get. Am I right?

in Muni Wi-Fi Systems & Crowding-Out Concerns on The Technology Liberation Front
Just got back from seminar in Brussels given by the Swedish municipal broadband council. In Sweden, if you use public funds to build a fiber network, you have to wholesale access to service providers on an open, non-discriminatory basis. In the beginning, municipalities and public utilities act as ISPs to seed the market, but as the number of service providers grows, they actually pull back. Cities do not want to become service providers forever and feel that once the number of ISPs delivering broadband (over the fiber network) reaches a critical mass, they can just step back.

Here are some stats in Sweden: in areas where there are open networks, broadband penetration is over 80% (lots of ISPs, lots of competition) but where the networks are owned largely by cable and telco operators, the penetration is less than 20%.
