Yahoo suffers the same problem as other Widget developers. None of them are 'killer apps' or must-haves. They're just conveniences, and people can live without them.
Also, browsing the directories is a huge time-waster with zillions of duplicates and more annoyingly, "Countdown" widgets that are not removed after they expire.

I do agree with Kimmy- this article must have slipped off iLounge and fallen onto Mashable.
As for apps, what happened to MyBudget, Spend and so on? Search for "Budget" on the App Store.

Wrongo. Looking for technical reasons why twitter became more popular than pownce is a red herring. Mac fans such as myself are always trying to make comparisons between a popular product (Windows) vs what we consider a better product. You know, like there may be more cockroaches than humans in the world but that doesn't make them *better*.
it isn't about removing features, it's about keeping them hidden from the newbies but letting the geeks access them. Pownce was simple to use, and had good features. I believe it was just poorly marketed.

Poorly marketed? Pownce had an all star team and got endless coverage. I can think of no major tech blog that failed to cover it.
Marketing is certainly not the issue - it's far more strategic. They came out with a product that was, in the public mind, very similar to an existing product that had already passed the tipping point. By the time Pownce launched an API, there were already thousands of applications for Twitter - it was an ecosystem while Pownce was still a standalone tool.

This is surely not a technical problem. Hulu Rights & Permissions Team and/or Lawyers- it's time to "Sharpen Your Pencil". Open up those Contracts and reneg them so they include the word "International".
PS YouTube is blocked at many workplaces... however Vimeo etc are not. Can anyone post it to another site?

pen and paper? you gotta be kidding. I still have notes and lists written on scraps of paper floating around the bottom of my bag. Have to find the paper, then retype a URL? Forget it.
Reorder a list with a pencil, erasing each one or writing an index number next to it, then re-writing the whole list in the correct order, only to decide it needs another revision so draw some arrows? Yeah that was not fun at all.
I like electronics. kthxbai!

Nice work, except it didn't work after it hits the "Computerlove" site. It just hangs there and the little progress dots go on forever.
There ought to be a checkbox next to each site so you can select the ones you want.

Hello online storage companies that happen to be reading this:
I will not use your product if you have a time-limited trial; I always sign up then forget to use the service for days.
I will not use your product if you dont offer at least 1GB for free. Yahoo Briefcase I'm looking at you.
I will not use your product if you severely cripple the functionality of that 1GB.
I will not use your product if it requires Windows(tm) to work.
I will not use your product if it does not work with either Windows or Mac OS X without installing something. Make this optional!

I hereby declare Yoono as The One To Watch
(no I dont work for them)
If you have some reason why you can't use Flock, then Yoono can get you most of that kind of joy.
As Flock is an aggregator of sorts, I should mention Secondbrain http://www.secondbrain.com/ and Ziki http://www.ziki.com/ which can do Netvibes-style mashups.
Also the plugin BlueOrganizer can tap in to a variety of social web services.
What about GroovyNotes, Yaplet, Chatsum and Gabbly? Isn't chatting social?
Finally Cluztr and Downfly are semi-social, as they let friends follow your clickstream or bookmarks.

Very simple: fubar is a cooler name than cherrytap. It also makes more sense. It's supposed to be an online bar, and fubar is actually an anagram- look it up. Cherrytap, on the other hand, made no sense... at least to me anyway.

Can anyone direct me to some kind of comparative list of what exactly is missing or so bad about Office for Mac? My boss is switching back-and-forth between Office 2003 for Windows and Office 2004 for Mac and she asked me what was different about the Mac version, as there are some UI differences.
After searching for ages, I could only find some vague references to Visual Basic- which she doesn't use- and that it was slower calculating large spreadsheets.
In all honesty, the online apps will be fine for the majority of users, as they have no knowledge of the missing high-end functions anyway. I mean it's hard enough to get people to use linebreaks, page breaks or styles in MS-Word.
And lastly, the web versions are always current- all the upgrades are done on the server!

Until I went to their home page I didn't even realize Kaboodle started as a social shopping network. I discovered them through the Firefox add-ons page.
As for Plum, I wasn't a mashable reader when these articles were posted, so I never heard of them until I found them via their Facebook app.

Why do they need your physical address? Most other sites don't bother asking for one. Now I have to make something up.

Also in the mac world we have had http://www.macupdate.com as a directory with comments and a recent entry that is gaining momentum is http://osx.iusethis.com. I just checked out Deligio and it seems pretty minimalist compared to Wakoopa, maybe to keep the page load time down. It did have results for a couple of programs, but the database is greatly lacking.
Also how will it complete with established players in the directory area such as Softpedia, Download.com/shareware.com and Tucows?
PS I tried using HTML in this comment and my hyperlinks disappeared when I clicked "submit".

"...created for our readers" should really say "created for our Windows-usingreaders" Come on Ms. Nicole, not everyone loves the Microsoft. Particls has no Linux or Mac version (probably due to their choice of technology- let me guess, .NET?) and no release date for them, just a nagging feeling it should be done.

I agree with Jamie, it's misleading. Of course you can run a whole bunch of .NET never-will-be-made-for-mac-over-bill-gates'-dead-body Windows apps if you buy Parallels. I knew that already. The apps themselves are running in Windows, they have no idea that they are "virtualized". Slightly more interesting would be if you could use CrossOver because that wouldn't need a whole Windows licence.
Please web developers, stay in AJAX/Ruby/Java land and avoid .NET, because at least you are not stuck with using the "There Can Be Only One" Operating System. Instead, you have a choice.

What wasn't exactly clear about the article was that if you have a free WordPress blog, then you already have an OpenID! This is awesome. I now have two more OpenIDs then I thought I had.

Another could have been the limiting of user control (profile customization) with their non-pro account. There are some things people will pay for (more file transfer space, removal of ads), but base functionality that's available elsewhere for free?
