Frankly, the views that you expressed here are exactly why I chose an arts major. One of the reasons it is so rare to find an objection-free work of art (be it film, sculpture, music, whatever) is that we as Christians have become so afraid of being polluted by art that we leave it to the "secular world." We can never hope to produce profound and beautiful art of any kind if we refuse to study or create it simply by virtue of the worldviews which create do.
I believe that we need to redeem culture. I believe that our job as Christian artists is to study art, even sometimes the objectionable works, with a critical eye while remaining immersed in the Word of God. Then we need to go on to analize that work in light of it's Ultimate Inspiration--since all beauty is from God and about God. A film doesn't have to be either "bad" or "good." It can be a film that I would never create myself while still having elements that I should imitate in my work.
I guess I'm referring to Common Grace. God gives the job of bearing His image to all humans, whether we choose to acknowlege Him or not; and that means that all of us can communicate His Truth, even though we do it in flawed ways.
I needed to know what makes "Christian Art." It can't be just a matter of whether the piece mentions God's name. There has to be something deeper the defines whether a work communicates God's Truth. I'm not going to define my views on Christian Art in this short space, but they are expressed generally in C.S. Lewis' sermon "The Weight of Glory,". It's a relatively short read, and I strongly recommend it. There are points where you feel fireworks going off in your head because his explainations are so poignant.

It sounds like fascinating stuff! I always get bogged down in classes because of the actual class work, but I love just sitting in on them and listening. I hate having to prove what I learn, better to store away my meaningless information for my own purposes. :0)

So, I watched VM for the first time when the season started. I did not believe you that I would like it... I gotta say, I was wrong! I still like Gilmore Girls better, but may I just argue that the whole charm of these shows (for me) is in fact the speed at which the witty banter moves. Justin says they talk way too fast too. I say, you just listen too slow.

I guess I just thought the plot line sounded a bit juvenille (it reminds me of Nancy Drew mystery books). But that might actually be part of what draws me. I think it might in fact be juvenille if it weren't for the skilled writing/witty banter--but you don't know that until you watch it.
I have watched all of the episodes this season, actually. I am one of those boring types that puts the kids to bed at 8, watches t.v. for awhile and goes to bed. So I pretty much know what is good on t.v. from 8 to 10 every night of the week (tragically, pathetically). I thought the season premere had alot of work to do setting up the season (like the first Star Wars movie) so the plot had to be a bit lighter in order to leave room.

I watched a movie recently of which I'd like to know what you think. "Papillion" has Dustin Hoffman and Steve McQueen; you've probably heard of it and possibly watched it, but it sometimes surprises me what you've heard of and not watched. I think you'd probably enjoy it at least as much as some of the movies you just critiqued and likely more than some. :0)
I enjoyed your critiques. I agreed with most (of the ones I've seen) and got interested in some movies I hadn't thought about.
By the way, I do like Jerry Lewis. He makes me laugh, and, frankly, there are very few comedians that can do that.

I actually only watched it because my husband wanted to, but I enjoyed it.
We are all doing really well. We moved, had a baby, Justin upgraded his job, and Mom is improving (slowly).

I was livid when they let Jessi go! I think she's wonderful. I would have slated her for the finals, and especially over Lauren so you and I really disagree on that one. I love Pasha. Love Danny, but he's kinda full of himself. And Laci makes me smile, but I think she might not win if only because her brother won last year. Just my personal take. How are ya, by the way?

Really? I loved Benji. He was my favorite to win, I think. Although, I loved Allison and I was super bummed when she was voted off. And I forgot the name of Benji's partner for most of the competiion, but I would have been very satisfied if she had won too.
We have VBS tonight, so I have to be more concerned about my children's spiritual upbringing than my tv obsessions. I'll have to rely on your video clips, I guess. ;0)

I am also a classically trained musician so that might have some bearing on things. Not to mention the fact that my current lifestyle demands a discipline that I might otherwise not hold myself to. I am impressed by your balance, though, and frankly not suprised by your mom's.

My feelings EXACTLY! And by the way, didn't want to like Ugly Betty. Fought it. Refused to watch it. Finally gave in, in spite of much teasing from my husband. LOVE IT! The entire feel of the show is fresh.

I miss 101.1! We have the equivalent of a bad y98 here and that's the best station. Grrr... Um, I really like Rob Thomas. Ideally, we would go to a Matchbox 20 concert, but those are scarceish given the split so I'll take Rob Thomas alone. Also really like Dave Mathews Band. Basically, I am a whole lot more mainstream than you are... but that has something to do with what I can find around here too.

Love Ugly Betty, we totally agree on that one. Love Grey's Anatomy, with ya all the way. Really enjoy Private Practice, more so than you do. COULD EAT PUSHING DAISIES UP WITH A SPOON!!!! I am worried about sustainability too, but if the writers can continue to be creative, I think it has real potential. you know how I like surrealistic stuff. Dirty Sexy Money is totally my guilty pleasure. Heroes tries my patience. Love Bones. House ROCKS. And I don't know how you have time for more shows than that!

I have Verizon Wireless for obvious reasons. ;0) I wonder what text charges would look like for non-in-network texting. I will find out.
The shows I watch, I watch as they come (for the most part). Justin says I'm a tv junky, but my kids go to bed at 8, which is when primetime starts here. So I am tied to the house with him gone til midnight and I get to enjoy my shows for a little while.

What about the shot from What Lies Beneath? The one that follows her from the bathroom, into the bedroom, back out into the hall, and then into the bathroom again where there is writing on the mirror! Dun Dun Dun... I don't remember how long it is, but I did a project on it in college and got an A (which I think is just because I noticed the length of shot, given that the class was a freshman requirement and we all know the average awareness of the college freshman.) That one didn't meet or exceed any records?

I have read 4 of them, and am reading Portrait of a Lady right now. I admit that this is my 3rd go at getting all the way through, though. I think I need to be in the right frame of mind to approach any given book. It took me several tries to read Le Mis and Great Expectations too. I take Dickens with a pretty open hand, there are portions I skim.

I always add a bunch of movies to Netflix based on your recommendations and then they come in the mail and Justin is like, "Where the heck does she hear about these movies!" By the way, I Netflixed "Away from Her." It was engaging, I watched the whole thing, but I kept waiting for something climactic to happen and it never did. I like films with definite build and release, and this one just didn't do that for me so I was a bit disappointed. I was touched by the issues raised, especially with my Mom's mind coming and going the way it does, but something was missing...

I like Vampire Weekend... they remind me of the Beetles a bit, but then I have never heard The Clash that I knew what I was listening to. Its not so much the actual sound that they produce, but the form and tonality of the music that is Beetles-esque to me. ;0) Fun stuff.

I really like Carly. I think she has the best voice of the women, in terms of finish. Also really like Michael. Remiele has always been boring to me...I just can't get into her, though she does have a big voice for such a little body. I really like Brooke as a person, and she knows how to choose her reperatoire appropriately--not sure she has the umph to win, though.

Okay, so I knew about the lyrics switch being legit, and I still really like Jason. I just want to mother him... but I've never understood the Archuleta fanaticism. He's forgettable for me. Love Brooke, but she better step up. And I've never been David C.'s biggest fan, but he does something great every week and I'm starting to have trouble ignoring him. ;0) Syesha can go home even though I can't pin down why I'm not in love. And I'm bummed about Carly... if not really surprised.

This one of your obsessions is really growing on me. I didn't expect to like her as much as I do when I first started hearing her stuff, but she's got depth... which is ironically hard to find among artists.
